2014 Roster - Offseason needs

The draft class doesn't take up nearly as much as most expect, since the players taken early will kick other players completely off the cap.
Approximately $1.5 to $2.0 million

If they can pull of the Mallett to the Texans for their 2nd trade then they are going to be able to address pretty much all of their major need in the first couple of rounds, as they will have at least 3 picks in the first two rounds, if not 4-5 from trading down with one or two of their high picks. By all accounts this is a strong draft and i can see them taking TE/WR/DL or LB/ and an interior OL really early. I would also add Yankey, the OG out of Stanford to the list of prospects i really like. Robinson is going to be long gone but Yankey could be another high quality guard prospect who could step in and start fro them from day one.

I like Yankey but Zach Martin from Notre Dame is a real technician. also, Billy Turner is one of the most athletic linemen in this draft.

Just saw an article saying that Mallett for the Houston second rounder has been discussed in the front office, can't believe it but I'll gladly take it, BB can either trade down or draft at both positions in the early 30's, I'd love for him to take Amaro and either ASJ (solve our TE problems like that), Yankey, Swanson (for those that considered with our O-line that we need to waste a high pick on it), or Murphy, one of my favorite D-lineman in this draft class. My personal favorite option is to get Amaro and either ASJ or Murphy at 32 and 33 respectively. (Yes, my Pats are winning it all in Jersey)

My dream situation is trading mallett for Houstons pick, and trading our first to a team like San Fran for two 2nds.

32
58th
61st
64th

then you can really go a multitude of different directions depending on how the second round shakes out, and allows for the team to move up for a player if they need to.

You are not taking into account the realities of the salary cap with regard to spending even more money in unrestricted free agency, especially at the wide receiver position.

Miguel's UNOFFICIAL 2014 Patriots Salary Cap Information Page

In order to re-sign Aqib Talib, the New England Patriots will most likely, at a minimum, have to shell out a contract comparable to Ike Taylor.

» Over the Cap- Top NFL Contracts: Cornerback

For the New England Patriots to free up $7 million in salary cap space for Aqib Talib, the New England Patriots would need to cut Tommy Kelly, Isaac Sopoaga, Adrian Wilson which adds up to salary cap savings of $6.167 million. The defensive tackle position prior to draft would be the following:

Wilfork, Armstead, Siliga, Jones (Chris), Vellano, Grissom

If the New England Patriots offer a three contract extension to Gostkowski and convert his current $2 million base salary to a signing bonus, the New England Patriots will save an additional $1.5 million in salary cap space for the 2014 NFL Season.

For a total salary cap savings of $7.667 million, the New England Patriots could most likely re-sign cornerback Aqib Talib and linebacker Dane Fletcher.

Furthermore, long snapper Danny Aiken will be a restricted free agent and the lowest tender for the 2014 NFL Season is $1.389 million.

I have no problem whatsoever cutting all of Kelly, Soap & Adrian Wilson.
I also understand that signing a quality free agent WR is expensive, but after watching Bill
blow his chance to draft Keenan Allen ahead of Dropson, I have no confidence whatsoever
in his ability to draft quality - and inexpensive - WRs.

If they do let talib walk how likely is the tag and traderoo? If they could get a 2nd and 4th out of the deal they could pick up a kyle fuller or ej gaines in the 2nd. Then they'd have more money for fa.

How much for scott chandler te? He'd be a perfect signing.

there are too many other comparable CBs that will be available, and the 10mill tag number will limit every other decision we have to make.

The chances of tagging Talib are very limited IMO

how much is the tag for rb?

Way more than we can afford. 8.2M for a franchise and 6.9m for transition. If Blount wants to stay in NE, he'll have to take a hometown discount. I hope he signs a big contract somewhere else and we get a 3rd or 4th in return for him in next year's draft. Edelman is more important to this offense. And, there a bunch of good rb's in this draft who can be had in the middle rounds of this draft.

I'm not saying we should let any of them go, but assuming we don't sign any big names, what compensation picks do people think we'd get for Edelman, Blount, Spikes and Talib?

I would hope that as soon as the season is over BB sits down with Blount and Talib (hopefully together) and has something like the following conversation:

"Aqib and LG, I want to thank you for all your hard work and contributions to the team this season. You've been a big part of our success, and I think you're great examples of the 'Patriot Way'. I'd like nothing better for you both to be part of the team going forward, and a big part. Nick and I will have to sit down and figure out what we can do given our cap situation and other needs and discuss it with Mr. Kraft, but we'll do the best we possibly can. We're not going to play any games with either of you, but we have to operate within the constraints of the cap and the overall team. I don't know how that will compare to what you can get elsewhere, but I want you guys to both think about what you want from the rest of your NFL careers. Both of you were unhappy before, and both of you have seen your careers soar since coming here, mostly due to your own hard work, of course. You can stay here and be together and be a big part of something special going forth, and get paid handsomely. Or you may be able to get a bit more elsewhere, and take whatever comes with that. Think about it, and again, whatever happens, thank you for being a part of this team."

Too many long words in there for Blount and Talib.

Talib's made some money is his career so far. Probably blew it. But, he'll also get a nice contract. Blount hasn't made anything and being a running back he has to simply take the biggest contract. Which we're not going to be able to match. Edelman>>>>>>Blount to our offense in 2014 IMO. Not to mention punt returns.

I think we can keep all three IMO, especially now without signing Spikes and making other cap saving moves

also talib said that blount never wants to take his jersey so i'm guessing talib and blount both absolutely love new england and want to stay

Too many long words in there for Blount and Talib.

He could do it in rap:

"Aqib and LG, I got something to say:
I want to talk to you about how much we can pay.
We're glad we got to know you and had a chance to connect
And we never want to give you no dis-respect,
But you have to think it out and not be a sap,
And we have to think it out and be wise with our cap.
You've had a great time on this team and with each other,
If you leave in FA you may not get another.
We'll pay you all we can, please don't be a fool;
Stay with the Pats and we'll win the Super Bowl.
We'll keep it straight and we'll skip the drama:
We want the Tali-b-and and some Blount Force Trauma!"
