2014 Draft Prospect Thread

Mayo

What did you think of the Zach Kerr video I posted up thread?

I think he would, and that's where I eventually projected him. But he came into the Senior Bowl at 252#, quite a bit lighter than the #261-265 he had been listed at in college, and showed that he lacks the upper body strength to be a full time lineman at the moment. He weighed in even lighter (250#) at the Combine. That's way too light to play 4-3 DE full time for the Pats.

Murphy seems aware that his future is more likely as a DE than as a 3-4 OLB:

I love his toughness, intelligence, motor and versatility. He has the frame to bulk up, without a doubt. But I think it will take him time to bulk up, add strength and develop the "combat skills" necessary to thrive as a 4-3 DE. That makes me less interested in him as a 2nd round prospect. I wouldn't be unhappy with it, but it's made him less of a target for me.

If he player in the 260s in college it should be very easy for him to get back there, I'm wondering if he dropped weight to reduce is time in the silly 40.

What Zach Kerr video? :confused3:

Shhhh. I want this kid to stay under the radar. I pretty much agree with Kevin Weidl's assessment: "Massive trunk, explosive/powerful upper body and light on his feet."

Shhhh.

Yup, he's underrated right now...oops...sorry, meant vastly overrated.

It's not clear if he played in the 260's, or was simply listed at a higher weight. Regardless, he lacks the upper body strength and hand skills to be an immediate rotational DE, which is where i had immediately projected him.

To be clear, I still love Murphy, and think he has a great future. He's one of my favorite players, and in the long run I think he'll be terrific. But I'm not sure I want to replace Jake Bequette with someone who won't be ready to contribute at DE for a while.

Yup. Any resemblance to a young, raw, small-school Vince Wilfork is purely coincidental:

- Wilfork: 6' 1 2/8" 323#; 5.08 40, 7.62 3C; 26.5" VJ, 8'3" BJ, 36 BP.

- Kerr: 6' 1 1/8" 326#; 5.08 40, 7.93 3C; 28.5" VJ, 8'3" BJ, 28 BP.

I got this table from a 49ers message board and thought it could be a helpful tool when looking at productivity in this wide receiver draft class (small sample size):

Sharing and Carrying the Load

Some of the receivers in this draft shared the receiving load with others in this draft class.
Others basically carried the receiving load for their teams.

The combined number in charts below is called the Production Grade or Production Ratio.

Generally speaking a combined score of 0.60 is considered excellent.

But, the degree that the load is shared must be considered.

HTML:
	               Shared The Load
Name % of Teams Yards % of Teams TD Combine
Rasheed Greene 0.230 0.227 0.457
Kelvin Benjamin 0.178 0.242 0.421
Kenny Shaw 0.180 0.121 0.301

Sammy Watkins 0.255 0.190 0.445
Matavis Bryant 0.133 0.139 0.272

Jarvis Landry 0.301 0.429 0.729
Odell Beckham Jr.	0.318 0.286 0.603

				Carried the Load
Name % of Teams Yards % of Teams TD Combine
Robert Herron 0.242 0.293 0.535
Donte Moncrief 0.270 0.333 0.603
Bradin Cooks 0.326 0.308 0.634
Paul Richardson 0.312 0.357 0.669
Marqise Lee 0.367 0.305 0.672
J.Abbrederis 0.403 0.270 0.673
Allen Robinson 0.400 0.378 0.777
Albert Wilson 0.403 0.469 0.872
Jordan Matthews 0.489 0.469 0.958
J.Janis 0.473 0.525 0.999

Interesting Notes:

--Those Clemson and LSU teams were loaded with talent but Beckham and Landry were still very productive.
--The "Carried the Load" section could imply that the smaller school players, Janis and Wilson, were very productive even when they were probably the main focus of a defense game plan.
--Same apply to bigger schools players of Cooks, Matthews, and Robinson.
--Should consider injury, player involvement in offense game plan, and the deficit of the games when the players gained their yards(coming from behind in the score)
--Could be one of the reasons the patriots are reportedly interested in Jared Abbrederis and Marqise Lee

Another metric that loves Allen Robinson. It would be horrible if we got that bum

Think they definitely take matthews if he's there in the second.

What are the odds Shazier is there at 29?

Scouting report on Ryan Shazier from Gang Green Nation:

Scouting The Draft: Ryan Shazier, OLB, Ohio State - Gang Green Nation

4.36 40, 6.91 3-cone, 4.21 SS, 42" VJ, 10'8" broad jump. Jamie Collins'-like explosiveness + Aqib Talib-like movement skills at 6'3" 237#.

He'll be long gone at 29.

Yup. I remember Ziggy Ansah took a similar leap upwards. He jumped from a late 1st/early 2nd projection all the way to the #5 overall pick in the draft. I think Shazier will end up top 10, top 15 at worse now, which is pretty much out of our reach.

Now everyone is looking for the next Jamie Collins or Lavonte David. And they aren't going to let Shazier slip, just based on athletic potential alone.

Now that's out of the way. Who's our new target at pick #29? LOL

Could be one of the reasons the patriots are reportedly interested in Jared Abbrederis and Marqise Lee

The insane depth at the WR position is the main reason I'd like to see them wait and grab one after the first round, and Abbrederis is at the top of my list. I've long liked him and think he has potential to be a productive starter in the league at some point.

I'm just in love with this draft in general, I'd love to see Belichick make trade downs and end up with 4 or 5 picks in the 40-100 range, so many good players to be had.
