Player Signing Patriots hosting OL Greg Van Roten [Updated: Signed 8/17]

Since when? Go ahead and show us where, in the CBA, it says you can't IR someone for a strained MCL. We'll wait.

I stand corrected even though there's this:

If Rupcich believes he is healthy and the Patriots are improperly maintaining his injured status, he could go to the NFLPA and pursue an Article 43 Non-Injury Grievance. Despite the name, Article 43 covers essentially any dispute about a team's compliance with the CBA, player contract or applicable NFL rules that isn't assigned to another grievance procedure.

But I think he loses any appeal.

I thought it was generally accepted that if a player has a practice squad position opportunity somewhere that the team settles and lets him go. But they could promise him three weeks and have an understanding with the team. so who knows.

I thought the player had more say so you're more right.

Also:

Ruprich is on a one year contract. He has to be re-signed to ever play another game with the Patriots.

So I would think he would need some sort of one year extension if there's any interest from the team next year, and they want him to sit and wait.

Otherwise I think they will make a settlement and let him be. I don't think the current Patriots are that mean spirited.

Maybe no one comes calling, and they add him back.

That grievance you're talking about is when they first issue the designation. Not 8-10 weeks after he's put on the season ending IR> Teams are not required to give a player an injury settlement. There is nothing "improper" about it.

That's nothing but speculation on your part and has NOTHING to do with your claim that a player sustaining an MCL sprain can't be put onto the IR.

Here is the reality. A team can put a player onto IR for any injury. IR in pre-season works differently than the regular season in that players who go onto it are done for the year unless the team gives them an injury settlement.

Injury settlements are done for 2 reasons. To clear cap space. Or because the player is likely to be healthy between now and the number of games that the settlement is for. It allows said player to search out other options or to see if the team has a need after the number of games in the settlement.

He's done as being a member of the New England Patriots unless they agree to another deal, so neither side have gained anything.

OR: The Patriots could clear cap with a settlement on a player who might not be here next year, and the player gains his freedom to pursue his NFL career (provided reports are correct that it's a short term injury) on some practice squad.

I don't know what you are making a big deal about. If the Patriots don't commit something to the player (and that just might be a spot on the practice squad in 3 weeks) then it will be in everybody's interest to move on.

I don't understand your math. Five starters and two backups at each of tackle, guard, and center makes for eleven.
I kind of group OL into 2 spots. OT and IOL (interior) I know technically some interior OL are more guards than centers just like some OTs are better on the left than right. But in the end the question is do you have a player who knows the spot. I believe both Brown and Roten know center a bit. Even if not either's best spot.

Say what?
Typical rookie learning curve. Coaches will fix this unless Caleb is a moron (unlikely)

Yep, it's when you read that he's being constantly pushed-back and/or letting Edges swim around him that we need to start worrying, because those are almost always unfixable issues. That's why not every 6'4/315 dude can play OLman in the NFL.

The issue is IOL backups. There aren't 4 backups. There are 2. That reduces the 11 to 9, although a 5th OT is possible, perhaps Hudson for a game or two.'

C: backups are Brown and Van Rotun (certainly good enough to be the 3rd emergency center)
OG: Van Rotun and Brown

But Brown's not here; so...?

Rizy looked decent in preseason as a pure center. I'd keep him around.

I wouldn't. There'll be Dozens more >>> him becoming available in two weeks. Heck there are probably a couple of dozen dudes stlll available that are already >>> him right now.

Van Roten has started at both C and OG. Brown has started at both C and OG. That’s all they need on the 53. Carry a couple of OGs on PS, with Rizy as one of them so there’s also a C on PS.

That way they don’t need to dump Rupcich with an injury settlement so he can stay on IR, rehab thoroughly, and be fully recovered for camp next summer.

As far as I can tell, he's started 1 game at Center. Which is still one game more than our new starting Center has.

It can't be just me, can it, who feels that we need somebody else in the building with more starting experience at Center than Wilson & GVR? People cannot be serious when they state that part of the backup Center plan is to wait Two Months for the almighty Ben Brown to return, can they? At the very least, they need to call the agents of Graham Glasgow & James Daniels to update their files and their clients' interests; and then be very, Very vigilant lookouts on Cut-Down Day...

Just looking at the position flexibility of the 9 expected to be top of the depth chart.

AVT has played LG, RG and even emergency RT in the NFL
Onwenu RG and RT
Wilson LG and C
Brown LG and C in the NFL, but was a RG for 2 years in college.
Roten RG, LG, and some C.
Lomu was a college LT but practising RT as well in pros.
Bryant was a college LT, had some RT snaps as a rookie, and both in practice.
Moses is a right tackle now, but has started on the left after injuries in 2020.
Ironically given the positional hand wringing, only Campbell has played just one position in nfl and college.

LT. Campbell. Bryant or Lomu
LG. AVT, Brown, GVT, (and Wilson)
C. Wilson, Brown, GVT
RG. Onwenu, GVT, Brown (and AVT)
RT. Moses, Bryant or Lomu, (and Onwenu)

Lots of versatility there. Potentially 2 back up swing tackles, 2 back up IOL who can play 3 spots, and all 3 starting IOL have experience at other OL spots.

One year 3 million dollar contract that becomes guaranteed after game one. This should shut down any talk concerning Ruprich coming back and replacing Van Roten.

With Brown likely available before him it's clear Ruprich is not in their plans.

Maybe he gets invited back to the practice squad if there are no other options for him.

That's provided there's an injury settlement, which there will be.

Rupcich could agree to an injury settlement of 4-6 weeks, wait the required additional 3 weeks, and resign here
assuming somewhere between games 6 and 8, he could be available, and pending the Pats need at IOL, he would be considered imo.
6'6" 325 lbs with some versatility.
we have seen vet signings like Van Roten have a change of heart about playing, seemingly every other year.
Brown could be more inured than thought
the team could have another injury
I would think Rupcich is on speed dial, even if he is sitting on another teams PS

Why?

The showed Ruprich the door.

They could bring back any player they cut, if the cards were to fall correctly, so of course it could happen.

But as far as we know: he's dead Jim.
