Patriots Rumor Butler & Saints working towards finalizing a deal (Thread now UFC Pats Fans Event)

That is meaningless.

According to what has been said in the last few weeks by multiple people (e.g. Lombardi or Curran) the Patriots can't tender a player if they want to trade him anyway. Supposedly this has to be done in good-faith assuming the team intends to have the player around in the upcoming season. Emphasizing a few times that they hope to have him back is exactly what they needed to do to avoid a potential issue with the NFLPA in the unlikely case there is a grievance. Cover all bases.
Not only that, but Kraft said the exact same thing about Welker and Talib. Bill Belichick will do what's best for the team. Case closed.

Sorry to take this thread off-topic:

According to Volin, someone asked Kraft
"so the intention isn't to trade him?'

to which Kraft answered "no"

But isn't that a double negative? I'm assuming by "isn't": he meant "is not" so the question is "so the intention is not to trade him" and by answering "no" Kraft is indicating that the intention is to trade him.

I guess it all depends on what your definition of isn't is.

Can they negotiate a trade before the player signs his tender, I'm not clear on that

Kraft: Patriots don't intend to trade Malcolm Butler

"As a restricted free agent who has yet to sign his tender, Butler could sign an offer sheet from another team, which the Patriots would have the right to match. If they did not match such an offer, the Pats would be awarded that team's first-round pick (in the case of the Saints it would be the No. 11 selection).

The Patriots could also work out a trade with another club like New Orleans, but such a deal could only be completed after Butler signed his tender."

What a sadly misinformed writer for nfl.com, the official web site of the NFL.

errrrrr.... Bump because everyone loves this thread . Its like reading a book about a cube of ice melting antarctica.

Saints GM Mickey Loomis says 'variables' involved in trading Brandin Cooks, possibly adding Malcolm Butler
"Brandin Cooks is a good player," Loomis said. "He's a first-round pick that we hit on. He's a good kid. He's a professional and productive. There's nothing bad here about Brandin Cooks. ... He's a good player and we're just trying to help our defense and help our team as a whole."

Loomis was asked if he would have liked to have nabbed a player in a trade involving Cooks like when the Saints picked up center Max Unger in the Graham trade two years ago. Loomis simply said there was more than one offer on the table from teams he deemed fair and the Saints went with the New England deal.

Adding Butler would be a significant step in improving the defense that's been at the bottom of the league in several major categories the past few seasons. Butler visited with the Saints a couple of weeks ago.

"There's not a lot I can say. We're kicking the tires I guess," Loomis said. "That's the way to describe that. We'll see how that process works."

@jeffphowe: Sean Payton says Saints won't sign Malcolm Butler to an offer sheet and risk the 11th pick. Will only trade for him.

Not a shock that they won't risk #11. I think we will be lucky to get a 2 because of his age and the $$ he wants.

He is correct, he must sign the tender and be under contact first.

I just don't see a trade happening then. Why when we can have him play for 3.9 million and have a ridiculous pass D.

Look at the spin job by the prick douchebag Giardi

Guy said the deal was imminent over a week ago.

SPINS SPIN SPIN

I just don't see a trade happening then. Why when we can have him play for 3.9 million and have a ridiculous pass D.

Reasons a trade could happen:

- Belichick thinks Butler could become a locker room distraction
- Belichick thinks Butler could start free lancing to try to increase his value with flashy money plays while leaving the rest of the secondary exposed
- Belichick just thinks pick #32 in this year's draft (at 4 year low rookie salaries and possible 5th year at reasonable salary) is worth more than 1 year of Butler at $3.9M with restrictions on external free agent activities in 2018 if they want a possible comp pick in the 97 - 101 range in 2019, and with Belichick not wanting to use the franchise tag on Butler for 2018. (assumes the trade is for pick 32; could apply with modifications to any draft pick or player as part of the trade
