Help Me Out RE: Stats Database Requests

LOL, I completely agree with you and actually tried that a couple years ago, but unfortunately it's a 15-hour process to do them all each week and I only made it a few weeks before I ran out of gas with that. This is daunting enough for one team as it is
Rather than compiling all that raw data, perhaps take some key stats (some lesser-known ones could be interesting) from other sites, and see where the Patriots rank week-to-week.

A few sites that you could use could include Football Outsiders (stats include DVOA, DYAR, Playoff Odds, Team Efficiency, OL, DL, Special Teams and much more). With rankings rather than just raw numbers we as fans get to see how the Patriots compare to other teams, and with it done on a week-to-week basis we see if they are improving, staying steady or declining.

A couple other stat sites that I like include TeamRankings.com and SportingCharts.com - they both have dozens of team stats such as offensive and defensive yards per play, yards per point, penalty yards, differential between the team and opponent for all the stats, etc. - as well as a lot of great individual stats.

That's actually not a bad idea. I'll take a look at that over the weekend and see if I can come up with a few that would be good to follow over the course of the season

It really bugs me the league doesn't have more of the numbers that I put together available because I started it specifically for that reason. You can't see how many 3rd down receptions Edelman has and first downs (or Gronk for that matter) anywhere, or how many negative carries a player has on 3rd and one. Or what Brady's best quarter passing the football has been, etc. Nor can you see how many red zone tackles Jamie Collins has or who has the most passes defensed on 3rd down.

So I got mad and figured out a way to put it together so I'd at least have them but as jmt57 correctly points out, there isn't any context since you can't compare the numbers against other teams, which is why I initially started trying to log it for all of them a couple years ago, but it was just way too big of a task unfortunately since each game takes about an hour to log both teams and then another 30 minutes to double check it again for accuracy.

But at least we'll have them for the Patriots here and I compare the major numbers to the league splits to make sure the totals from data are accurate, and then it's just a matter of manipulating it from there

Stats.com use to be real good, havent been there in the longest and not sure if you can import/run a feed off them

Agree, you'd need to compare this (and most data actually) across teams in the league. But if you get the data from a comprehensive league source, it shouldn't be that hard to split out for NE as well as other teams. Might as well do the whole league while you are there. That's what I'd do anyway. So first I'd concentrate on finding the most complete data source(s), and the rest should fall into place pretty easily (relatively) for the team by team thing. I'd be able to help if you need some DB / SQL / scrape help... for a lifetime membership of course.

@Ian - whenever you find time for this little project, Pro Football Reference is another source you may want to check out.

On their home page there is a box that says" New Fantasy Tools for 2015", but actually they are some pretty cool stats that can be used for non-fantasy football purposes.

The first link wasn't working correctly, but if you go to 'Seasons' click on 2015 for our current season. Once that page opens look for 'Fantasy' on the toolbar, and you will have several stat options.

For example under Red Zone Passing Stats there are stats and rankings for Completions; Attempts; Completion Percentage; Yards, Touchdowns and Interceptions. These are all then duplicated for Inside the 10 - i.e., twelve sortable columns. In addition you can sort by name (alphabetical) and team, giving you 14 columns of data. Then on the far right you can see all of that player's red zone passing plays.

2015 NFL Standings, Team & Offensive Statistics | Pro-Football-Reference.com
2015 Red Zone Passing Stats | Pro-Football-Reference.com
Tom Brady 2015 Passing Plays | Pro-Football-Reference.com

All of that is repeated for the following:
  • Red Zone Rushing
  • Red Zone Receiving
  • Team Defense vs RB
  • Team Defense vs TE
  • Team Defense vs QB
  • Team Defense vs WR

PFR also has very detailed stats by player position:
2015 NFL Passing | Pro-Football-Reference.com

They also provide the ability to conduct custom searches, though that is something that I have not tried in a while (and frankly have forgotten how to do), but if I recall correctly they have a blog with tutorials on how to perform those type of stat-based searches.

Ian, I don't know which stats need to be compiled, but I've always wondered about the efficacy of the prevent defense when ahead and was curious if that could be analyzed using stats.
