This whole debacle doesn't reveal anything about Bill.

It reveals that the voters and the league front office in general, are completely incapable of separating butthurt from reality.

Problem with changing the voting system is we didn't have this same energy with TO

TO although not the same level of accolades as BB was just as deserving to be a first ballot as any WR. Nobody cared but now we do. The HoF Was already a joke before this, this just cemented it even more

Ahh the troll paradox; Does one give the troll the backhander their d-baggery merits or deny them the attention cookie they crave?

The latter, of course. I don't understand why, in a world where there are so many things to make you angry, people need Stephen A. Smith or WEEI. They're addicted to anger and can't help rising to the bait.

Here’s one Kansas City choad’s attempt to get himself off the hook:

I don't know if this is true or not, obviously I can't get in this person's brain. But what it says to me is regardless of whether it's true or not this system they have is idiotic. There should not be a limit each year as to how many people can get in. Like, just imagine for example if Brady, Montana, Bradshaw, Aikman and Mahomes all came up in the same year. Crazy I know, but just imagine. You can only vote for 3, who do you choose? In my mind all of them deserve to be in the HoF. The criteria for the HoF shouldn't be "Is this guy more or less of a hall of famer than this other guy who happened to come up in the same year?" it should be "Are they a hall of famer, yes or no?"

So what should but probably won't happen in my opinion is everyone who becomes eligible in any given year based on when they retired and what the mandatory waiting period is for their type of contributor (player, coach, owner, etc) get a straight up and down vote. If that means 15 guys get in in the same year, fine. If that means 0 guys get in, also fine.

Also, this BS Joe Gibbs excuse people are using about "Oh, he may coach again someday." is crap. The eligibility period should start the day someone officially retires and if they come back during the waiting period their clock gets reset, if they come back after and are in the Hall who cares? Everyone KNOWS Tom Brady is a Hall of Famer, everyone KNOWS Belichick is too. What difference does it make if it's official or not?

Wow.

The "did nothing without Brady" argument is just dumb because if that's the case remove Landry, Walsh, Knoll and Shula from the HOF because they never did anything without HOF QBs.

-Landry never won a conference championship without Staubach and was 6-8 in the playoffs without Staubach and missed the playoffs 10 out of the 18 years in which he coached without Staubach as his QB.

-Walsh was 8-24 before Montana became Montana and only ever coached in the nfl with Montana on the roster. The year after he left the 49ers George Seifert won a SB as their coach.

-Knoll was 1-13 before Bradshaw and the second Bradshaw retired he never finished more than 2 games over .500 and only made the playoffs once.

-Shula majority of his career he had a HOF QB between Unitas in Baltimore ('63-'69) Griese ('70-'80) and Marino ('83-'95) in Miami and the guy really should get knocked for having Marino be his QB for 13 seasons and only getting to 3 AFCC and only winning 1.

and all those guys coached in an era which there was no free agency.
Yes, it's lame especially since Walsh had a relatively short career. Brady and Belichick were together 20 years.

So, other than that, you didn't do so well, Belichick. You needed to rebuild the next Dynasty in 2020! In order to prove your value.

Never mind that, other than Chuck Noll, no other NFL coach in the Super Bowl era has ever had sustained success for a decade. Bill Walsh was 9 years.

Unless there's a radical change in the voting or the voting members like Polian, it is not a cinch that Belichick gets in next year.

I've been on enough committees to know that when there's blowback, the people voting one way do not revise their position, but instead they become ever more entrenched.

If Spygate is a reason for not voting him in, and even if you only wanted a one year punishment, all this blowback -- forcing people to defend their Spygate rationale -- ingrains it in the voter as purely logical and reasonable position. So, you might have gone in NOT voting for Belhcick THIS YEAR, but when you were exposed and had to defend yourself, you begin to see Spygate the way Baseball HOF voters see steroids.

To be fair - not sure the whole first ballot thing really matters for coaches that much when Paul Brown and Vince Lombardi aren't first ballot HOF (!!!!!) Those are Bill's only true peers when it comes to football coaches.

It's upsetting in the moment but Bill definitely needed some good PR after the last couple of years, and it took this disgraceful act by the HOF voters to galvanize people and get them to properly give Bill his flowers. Yes, he's not perfect, he definitely messed up his last few years as he let ego > needs of the team, and his personal life is not what I would have chosen. But I'm glad that discussion is finally not overshadowing his 50 years of contributions to the NFL including leading the greatest dynasty of modern American sports.

Now if Tom Brady doesn't get in first-ballot I think there will be riots in the streets. For a player it seems to be much more meaningful

How is what amounts to a popularity contest controlled by people who could have an agenda against the inductees? Seems like there would be some sort of conflict of interest….I bet Sean Payton gets in first ballot even though he shouldn’t…

And now we get to see the dog killer get his own tv series…disgusting..

IIRC don't think Madden was in on the first ballot either

While I disagree with his reasoning, I respect that KC writer for being a man and explaining things. More than we can say for the other rats.

If Bill does not get in next year, could the chairman of the HOF override it and put him in anyways?

I feel bad for whichever of the three senior players does get selected because they will take abuse thru no fault of their own, " You put him in over Belichick?" If Kraft does not get elected it plays into the "they hate the Patriots" narrative and if Kraft is selected the conspiracy people will claim he acted to prevent Belichick from being selected. Here's your obligatory Patriots controversy before the Super Bowl. At least it doesn't involve current players or coaches...

the solution is to have a first year of eligibility vote as a stand alone category….yes or no

Because he was a **** to a lot of people in the media.
Starting his career off here with a local writer calling him duplicitous pond scum didn't help.

I've always felt that Bill should have figured out a way to give fans more than grunts and snorts.

So this really states the obvious that the criteria for voting is up to the individual and in this case, he sympathized with the 3 seniors since this would likely be their last chance for induction.

Nothing from this article indicates that this voter reviewed their careers relative to others from the same era or how they match up to peers across time, longevity, wins, stats, etc. etc.

So another voter could simply say he is not voting for anyone that was fined, suspended for breaking the rules regardless of the entire breadth of career accomplishments. Or even still, they could vote for a person that in once case broke a rule (i.e suspended for drug violation) but choose to not vote for another (recording team signals).

Forget about Belichick for a moment, this article and the basis of this voter's criteria completely undermines the HOF voting process and invalidates the selections past and present. Being inducted into the HOF is in the eyes of nominees the most prestigious individual accomplishment in their careers and this is an example of the basis of a vote!!

There should be a massive uproar over this process and past HOF's should be the loudest to protect the honor that this award bestows!

I personally loved him more because he was a **** to the arrogant media. (And to be clear not all of the media is arrogant I'm talking about, the usual suspects we all know.)

That ****stick Borges is on the Committee? Oh **** wtf.
Out of interest are there any females on the committee. Or is it an all male enclave?
