Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

Any criticism of Lynch's game has to be considered carefully with our current situation. Once Tank went down, we were left with two problems: No reliable fourth safety (I personally haven't seen enough of Spann to say I want him taking a regular turn), and no depth behind Rodney.

I think Meriweather will be good, but better suited to FS, and Sanders is a very capable backup, but I don't want him getting 100% of the SS snaps if Rodney gets hurt.

If we still had Tank, I might question the move, but as it is we needed a vet safety and he's as good as they come for a one year deal.

Precisely. You need to look at the move in the proper context. With Tank here and learning, BB would not have made the move. With Tank on IR and Capers enamored with the STRONG safety attack D, Jawhn Lynch was a good Plan B.

Like the signing, will add depth to the safety position.. his knowledge of the game is beneficial to some of the youngun's.. a bridge player.. he can be pretty smashmouth, along with Rodney this can be a very tough crew.

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

Like the signing a lot. Pretty much keeps the roster makeup the same with Lynch in for Tank. So it's not like they are bumping a young guy for an old geezer, as the haters would say.

Those two always struck me as peas in a pod. Highly intelligent, well-spoken, good-looking, personable fellas with a taste for bonecrushing violence.

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

What I don't understand is why people would complain about this. Sure, he's not going to cover at a Pro Bowl level. But for a team that ALWAYS is short in the defensive backfield at the end of the year, why wouldn't you want to add depth? Plus, there's no way it's a significant contract. What do we have to lose??

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

I feel the same about the signing of Lynch as I did about the signing of Tank ..... other than an experienced body ....... no biggie.

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

Any criticism of Lynch, specifically that he lost a step, is quite valid, but when you consider his savvy, experience, presence, leadership, but most importantly a low salary and minimal role makes it worth a shot.

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

I don't understand how anyone can not like the signing - well anyone but the Spann and Ventrone families.

If this was a move made in February to fill a starting spot, I would not like it. Lynch is not a starting caliber safety anymore. The concerns about getting younger and faster would apply.

It is a move in mid August to fill a reserve role created by injury. He is here to play situationally and provide depth at a spot where frankly there is a huge hole. I see no reason he cannot do that.

It's Jawhn Fahk'n Lynch! And beyond that, he'll be playing situationally I would think. No one expected Tank to be in there for 75% of the snaps, did they? Debbie Downer should take herself a breath and realize that this is a good move and we'll be happy to have another veteran player of his caliber on the roster when this year is said and done.

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

This isn't even debatable as to whether its a good signing.

Its 2 weeks til the first game - do you guys think we're gonna trade for a young pro bowler at S?

Tank Williams goes down and Lynch comes in. It's a good move and very likely an upgrade.

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

LOL...you forgot people like me with mixed feelings. :D
Yes, he's old, but so is Seau...and I wasn't happy when we go him either, but he did alright.

Yeah, and what about the wafflers like me who feel VERY strongly both ways. :)

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

I love this signing. John Lynch has always been a Patriot.. he just didnt know it until now ;)...

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

Anybody else think a couple of coaches (BB & DC)are going to sit down with Mr. Lynch and ask him precisely how Shanny analyzes and prepares his defense for the Patriots?!?! :D

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

Yeah, too old, too washed up, etc. etc.

How many times have I heard this one about a player? Clearly he was unhappy in Denver last season. I heard the same song about Junior Seau in Miami, before he came here. Of course, we weren't expecting much from Junior, but he exceeded expectations.

This guy will be a fantastic player for the downs he plays. Smart, veteran player. I've been saying for years that I wish he was on our team.

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

damm - not signed yet.. per BB presser

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

I'm curious how they'll use him. He's ten years older than Tank, so Im not sure its an upgrade. If anything, it'll add some experience and leadership to the younger guys.

True that.

From what I understand, Tank wasn't taking a lot of safety reps. Every recent year, I'm worried about Harrison's health. I'm a little surprised at the signing considering Lynch's reported desire to start and my belief that we are already ok at safety. Should be all upside.

The PFT article states at the outset that Lynch and the team have agreed to terms. They didn't say he was signed.

But now I think it's inevitable...
