The question is simple:

In your opinion, what is the best-case scenario now that the Pats have drafted O'Connell?

You can go as far into the future as you'd like, and answer it any way you'd like; the only thing that I'm going to ask is that your scenario at least be plausible (i.e., more likely than, say, Josh McDaniels lining up at WR this season).

[At the moment, I'm just going to throw this out for ideas; I don't want to say any more just yet because I don't want to bias the conversation.]

Have him wait in the wings under Brady and develop his own style of running the offense. When Brady sits, move O'Connell in and see what he can do with his own personal quarterbacking style. Hopefully this will turn out something like Montana-Young. But I doubt it.

Give us a backup who can actually play when he gets in the game??? BYE BYE Matt!! No more throwing the ball to the other team when you get your chance buddy....

Best case scenario? 5 years from now, KO takes over and plays like Steve Young. The torch is passed from our version of Brady (Montana) and the Pats don't skip a beat en route to winning at least 3 more superbowls with their new QB.

That during one of the games he's charting this fall as emergency QB, he writes down the name of that great open air Mexican restaurant in Old San Deigo that I can't remember and has one of the ballboys fax it to me at halftime.

I don't know alot about him personally and not alot of scouts/talking heads were that crazy over him in the draft.......and alot of people were scratching their heads.....so he is a giant question mark I would think.....has alot of raw talent from what I have heard.....but he could either be a good backup ......or be gone by the end of camp......Too early to make a call on a kid like this........I look for Gutz to hang around in the backup role this year.....and cassel will either be #3 or trade bait.....

And you, sir, are the winnar.

Best case scenario is probably he dazzles in training camp and preseason games, maybe here and there in mopup duty or if God forbid Tom misses a game, for two or three years and we can trade him for a late 1.

But a perfectly acceptable scenario, and probably the one envisioned by BB, is he is the backup for 5 years and go from there.

Never plays a down, Brady takes every snap and the Patriots win 5 more superbowls.

I want Brady to play into his 40's so I hope he's traded for a 1st rounder after looking pretty in the pre-season in one of the upcoming seasons.

Comes in after Brady torches the defense and has some great Late 4 Qtr downs. Get's traded to Atlanta, KC or Miami for their first pick next year and we get some crazy LB that plays until he's 38 and four (or five, whatever it is) years after he retires he's inducted into the HOF.

Is that asking too much??

Best Case. Brady retires around 35, and O'Connell comes in, guns blazing and takes us to the promise land, like his mentor, the almighty Tom Brady.

We have a smart brain trust. We are already looking for the future replacement of Brady. The Colts have who? Jim Sorgi? The Seahawks have who? The Buccaneers have who?

Who don't the Buccaneers have?

O Conell will be a good back up qb in 4 yrs.. Until then Tom Brady can not be replaced..

Than again, I was naive enough to say that about Drew Bledsoe in 01

the montana-young situation would be good, so best case would be better then that.

Cassell and Guitty step up their play in camp and O'Connell ends up on our practice squad.

With all due respect, that's just not close to realistic as O'Connell would have to clear waivers to get there.

Best case ? O'Connell never plays for us, that means we have a healthy Brady for years to come.

We'll visit this in three years when Tommy is 33 and probably looking for one last big contract. Will the Patriots pay up for a guy with some time left but some wear on the tires or let someone else pay up and move on ? Depends on O'Connell's development, Brady's contract demands and how he's doing physically at that time.

The only downside to this, of course, is that it means that the next Tom Brady is something like a freshman in HS right now o) which means we'll be going through this Brady's-next-backup thing another two or three times in the interim.
