Draft Game... Comment Thread

Corey Redding is there best linemen. They have no tackles. And Laws fits them perfectly. I personally feel he is on the level of Sedrick Ellis.

So you say. But when a guy can be had in the 2nd round, why reach 30 picks for him? As for Laws being on level with Ellis.. Ummm.. No. but that's ok.

I just think that its a Matt Millen type move and Millen has shown how ignorant he's been in the previous drafts..

Yes and yes.

I considered a CB but I'm not big on taking a corner this high in the draft because of a) the restrictions on d-backs and b) there is depth at this position at this draft.

I almost took Derrick Harvey since the Bills were near the bottom of the league in sacks last year, and that would be a good way to offset their needs at d-back. But Rivers was the guy I wanted.

Buff has the makings of a great defense and I think the CB need is a little over stated. Youboty is returning from injury and showed flashes of great play. McGee isn't 2004 Bailey, but he's servicable.

Have you even seen Laws play? Ellis has just looked good at the Senior Bowl and Combine. Laws had 112 tackles and 4 sacks this year, compared to Ellis's 58 tackles and 8.5 sacks. Laws was the only player on that Notre Dame D and he was unblockable all season long. Just because he doesn't have the hype as Ellis doesn't mean he isn't better then him. There is no guarntee he'd be there in the 2nd round. It's easier to find the Harvey and Groves or the world, it's very diffcult to find a very good DT. When you have the chance and the need, you don't pass it up.

I also almost took Harvey but went with my gut and took speed to help a non-existent pass rush. Also, keeping in mind the teams recent bad news involving the D line.

Really? You're gonna complain bakes? I SPECIFICALLY asked if anyone else wanted the Pats, also I didn't assign myself the Pats, I chose them in the thread that Gomezcat started.

I'm just stating the facts. Yes you chose the Pats, just like you chose to be commish. When the idea of making me commish came up you said let's wait. So I did. In the meantime I setup a schedule similar to last year. BTW we didn't start that draft until 4/7 & yet we still managed to get through 4 rounds.

I appreciate your iniative to get everyone together & get this thing rolling, but I don't like how you went about it that's all.

Let's move on

Arizona, needing help at Cornerback, Running back and DE, takes Free Safety Kenny Phillips when they already have 2 very good safeties in Antwan Rolle and Adrian Wilson?

Yeah, I very nearly took Harvey instead but I though I had a chance of picking up a decent pass rusher and a decent cornerback in later rounds, whereas if you want a safety who can come in and start soon, Phillips is it. Safety may not be the biggest need for the Cardinals (although I'd hold off calling Antrel Rolle a 'good' safety - he's currently just an average-at-best corner who is being moved to safety in the hope he'll be better there) it is somewhat of a need, Phillips represents good value and he and Wilson would hopefully give Arizona some of the best safety play in the NFL. And as Pats fans should know, good safety play can cover for weakness at corner.

I'm between Connor and Jenkins at 18. Not having a second round choice is kind of a pain. I feel liek Connor would be a reach though.

That's funny cuz I was just reading TSN guide they have the Pats taking Jenkins & Connor in the 1st & 2nd rounds respectively.

I agree.

It's your pick though.

Haha yeh I just saw that this week. I feel like thatd be great for the Pats.

I'm very surprised at some of these picks. Seems like people are either taking all need or all value. Not a combination of both. On that note, I need to figure out my pick...

So here is the thinking that went into my pick:

-Mendenhall was already taken and Stewart is an injury case who already is having a significant foot surgery. Also, the Texans just signed Chris Brown of the Titans, so there is plenty of talent/depth at RB.
-Cherilus would have been a reach at Tackle, and I figure I can get a project or lower tier tackle in the middle of the draft.
-Connor would have been a reach and the Texans have decent, OLBs, so maybe with the third round pick Ill take a pass-rushing OLB or a guy for depth.
-Mike Jenkins arguably is a top-ten talent that kind of fell into my lap and fills a need. He ran a sub 4.4 at the Combine, is physical, and has good man-to-man skills. He could start the season at the second CB spot, but likely will at first platoon with ***gins and Fletcher, with Reeves holding down the 1-spot while Robinson recovers from his injury.

Once Robinson is recuperated and Jenkins has some sea legs, Robinson will return to number 1, Jenkins will man the 2, and Reeves will play Nickel. Thats a very good, very young CB corps good enough to shutdown the Jags passing offense and, with an improved pass rush, hold their own against the Colts.

Was expecting the Houston GM to go either CB or RB, and he didn't disappoint.

In the mock draft I did I had the Texans taking Stewart though.

If I hadn't taken Phillips would he have entered into your thinking? The Texans could do with an impact safety.

Yes actually, I almost want to say I would have taken him. At first, when the draft started, I was convinced I would take him, but now Im not so sure. Glenn Earl has a promising start to his career, but had to sit out this past season with a Lisfranc. And I like Will Demps as a serviceable Free Safety. If Robinson wasn't hurt and/or you hadn't picked him, I would have gone with Phillips. Nice pickup.

I was split between Harvey and Sweed and what it came down to was giving McNabb a big target for one more last run at a championship. Sweed is similar to TO, maybe not as fast, but just as physical and without the extra laundry. Harvey would have made a great replacement to Kearse, but at this point I'm giving McNabb the tools he needs so he if he can't do it this time we'll find someone who can. Also this allows Curtis to move into the #3 role which is more of a natural position for him.

I like the Sweed pick, and I (the Redskins) was considering him myself at #21. Damn you, division rival!

Tampa could go a million ways here, Harvey, Devin Thomas, Brian Brohm are all realistic possibilities.

haha, I wasn't even thinking about that, but that would have made a great pick for you :) Maybe add another smurf WR to your team in DeSean Jackson?

I have my eyes on a few other guys, but I'm not going to say anything just yet. At least not until Tampa picks.
