I read somewhere that in relation to cap percentage, Gonzo is still making a shade less than Stephon Gilmore made when he originally signed with the Pats from Buffalo. Shows how much BB (then) and the Pats now value a great CB. Gonzo shuts down half the field and makes the D easier for everyone.

The 2030 and 2031 salaries of $24M and $31M respectively which are not guaranteed almost whatsoever, now or in the future, will almost certainly be a renegotiation point in the future and for all intents and purposes should be considered "fake years". While he will still be "under contract", he will not want to play those years for no guarantees. He will likely want another raise if his standard of play continues and will want more guaranteed money. So he is good through 2029 but will either need another big deal and a raise before the 2030 season or will end up traded at/around that time. He will be around 28 years old then, so still in his prime and ripe for one more big contract.

But he'd still be under contract those last 2 years. They could extend him at that point, but if they don't, then short of a holdout he'd play for $26m & $33m. It's good that those 2 years call for high salaries so won't feel grossly underpaid like Gilmore felt.

Back in the spring when we first started speculating about what we all thought Gonzo's contract would look like the general consensus felt it would contain a $30+MM signing bonus, the AAV would be about $30+MM per year, and it would make him the highest paid CB at the time. So, after FOUR months of anguish, angst, consternation, and LOTS of name calling, we have a deal that looks ALOT like the deal that we talked about back in May, So, I have to ask WTF was all the drama about??

Basically, the deal is just marginally the same deal that Witherspoon got, only Gonzo gets about a Million more or about 3% more than Witherspoon. So, what made it this last this long. Why wasn't it done 3 days after Witherspoon got his That's what I don't get. All that angst to get pretty much exactly what we expected back in ****in' May. That's what I want to know.

My only guess is that the agents wanted to create some mechanism that would tie his compensation to any cap raises which would be game changing. After that I got nothing that would make any sense. Sometimes I wonder if both sides agreed to the deal weeks ago and kept it quiet so it would give the media and fans something to talk about,

Let's be honest: that's what we all wanted from the Krafts and Gonzo 1 Mill more than Witherspoon.

And I think we all were essentially saying the same thing: We need middle class players, we need to draft well, and we should not overpay middle class guys (relative to big money deals).

Yes, absolutely. I'm a big proponent of Belichick's way of roster building, middle class and depth. I was just pointing out that during those 20 years, we signed 80-85% of our home grown players to 2nd contracts/extensions, and we brought in some top free agents. We rarely let our own guys go, and in the case of Thuney, it was an enormous mistake.

I have no idea what changed nor what the holdup was. I do know it was frustrating for the player, the team, the fans, and everyone who cared. It was way more frustrating than all other extensions the succesful 2023 1st round picks did.

I still think it's fair to question if the difficulty of this deal points to a problem with the process that needs to be fixed.

Or perhaps there's no problem, and they benefited from playing hardball. Maybe the team managed to shave a few bucks off the cap hits, or keep some contract details we'd all be glad they kept if something goes wrong down the road.

Who knows about any of that. We speculate so much because we know so little.

Brown was functional as the 32nd pick
Cooks was a good add as JE11 blew out his ACL in 2017
Michel flamed out but at least he was the ground game in 2018 that got them a SB.
Always wonder what Mac would have been with Josh in 2022 and 2023.
