There is a "Th'Media" because it's work (sometimes called "reporting") to somehow get at information the parties did not intend to share. Otherwise, they are in a gaggle asking questions and they all get the same info.

The product is getting or guessing the information that we the general maggotry like to argue about. At any point in time when definitive info (like a signed contract) appears, it's axiomatic that the guesses and apparent leaks will not be 100% correct. Hence, "the media was mostly incorrect every step of the way."

I totally agree with you. There is no way "the media" can be right most times; they do not have the information.

Yet we make them believe that we consider wrong information better than no information by consuming it as if it were real information, despite that we see this in every case, and fighting over it... which is what we really want to do.

So ultimately, it's the clamoring public that's to blame.

For us, this just means "I saw in Reiss that someone told Bedard that Felger and Mazz were right when they said..." just isn't a story. Nothing is really a very reliable story when there's a contract negotiation at stake. That includes tattoo spotting in the case of Asante Samuel ("Get Rich to This," the name of a song he liked) and now 20 years later, rumors of unmeetable contract demands for number 0.

Drafting a player so good you have to pay him top of the market or trade him is a problem i would love to have more.

Part of the thing this type of contract along with Mayes will put pressure on the team to actually hit on some of these drafts rather than overpay a middle class to fix their terrible drafting and that's not really a bad thing, it's not the best players job to take less to cover up for other peoples mistakes.

Part of the reason the Rams and Eagles give out these deals to their best players regularly is they get production out of their drafts regularly that's the ideal model for the NFL in the modern era you want 4-5-6 elite players that are paid like it obviously the QB has to be one and young drafted production rather than having a bunch of overpaid mediocre middle class.

Boy, BB had a pretty bad last 8/9 1st round draft picks. I will say that Jones & Sony were actually pretty good, but got hurt or couldn't last due to mental stuff. But BB really left us with one last gem. If Gonzo can stay healthy and mentally committed to growth, he could be another Law or McCourty in Patriot lore.

Yep, very different from a 6 year contract people were saying, and I though they were rushing to judge it a bit. Gonzalez's contract would have been done much easier if it was like that.

But the 1st reports were WRONG. This is a 2 year extension and a hold out prevention contract. In this context, Gonzo took a big W.

I was thinking it would be 5 year total contract. But it is not. 4 year total contract is much different than a 6 year/4 year extension

Maye’s demeanor just doesn’t strike me as a “bleed the team for every last dime” type of player but who knows. If it happens, it happens. But it would be great if he was the rare player to not be pushing for a record-setting contract. Could also see him being willing to structure it in a way where it lends itself to being re-done repeatedly along the way to help the team competitively and financially, like Mahomes’ contract. Long deal with a big figure attached but ultimately not that lucrative per year and the monetary structure is ripe for pushing around/back by adding more years every few years.

Adding onto this - I could see something like where he does a "10 year, $650 million deal" so on paper he's the highest paid QB AAV, but the guaranteed money is mostly made up of guaranteed salaries that can be converted into signing bonuses annually to push cap hits out into the future and create room each year. Also makes it easier for Kraft's cash flow as he just needs to have that money read each year for that year and doesn't need to pony up half a billion dollars at signing. Then after a few years, they can tack on a few more years while also raising his AAV to make him among the highest paid still, and continuing to push the big bills towards the back of the contract. Lets them absorb the cost of Gonzo's expensive years very easily while also having room for other guys, and maintains a very long contention window without being too hamstrung by the cap.

I don't think so.

He's playing for about $2.2M this year which they probably marked as "guaranteed" as a gesture to make the number bigger even though it was effectively already guaranteed once he plays game 1 tomorrow. His 5th year option next year, which is around $18.1M, is already fully guaranteed. He signed an extension with a $33M signing bonus.

$2.2M in 2026 + $18.1M in 2027 + $33M signing bonus = $53.3M of guaranteed money which is basically exactly what was reported as what was "fully guaranteed" in the deal at signing.

So it all adds up. They are using the years he already has plus his signing bonus to inflate the "fully guaranteed in first two years" figure, and then the years after that don't actually start to become guaranteed until next year.
