They knew they were losing Gibbens because they wouldn't match what was going to be offered him.
If the Patriots tender Gibbens, he did not have to sign the tender.
He could negotiate with other NFL teams during the RFA signing period.
If another team offered him a contract he preferred, he could sign an offer sheet.
The Patriots would then have the right to match that contract to keep him.
They would have declined.
So we can argue for pages, but Gibbens was going to be offered more than here, whether they knew it, or amazingly not.
Gibbens is a little like Hollins where he serves a need for a year or two, and then moves on to another situation. I agree that they need to find a replacement for Spillane, by developing their own, rather than pay a JAG like him 4.5M, but that doesn't make Gibbens unvaluable in the right situation.
Gibbens was a one year stop gap. He is pretty much as you see him, but there are plenty of NFL players much worse.
