But I believe players and teams talk to each other. The Patriots want to know league interest as much as the player. They want to plan.

With the correct information their only level option with the 2nd rounder, but that was ridiculous. They weren't going to pay him $5 million, and nobody was giving up a second rounder.

The only other option was screw over the player. Cut him before camp end. The money is not guaranteed. I just don't think this is how this group rolls. They count on old players coming back.

Well you said it was “probably, even likely”. You have a habit of saying you didn’t say what you said.

RFAs are not allowed to.
Why would the Patriots care? If tender him if they want him, they match or don’t if someone offers.

They could have offered right to match. They lose nothing by doing that unless they think the guy isn’t even worth 3.6 mill if they get stuck. A guy who played as much as he did is worth 3.6 unless you determine he was a weakness.

772 snaps including special teams warrants 3.6 mill unless you were bad in those snaps, which he was, which is why he is gone.

Gibbens played a lot of snaps in Tennesee. He was well known in the NFL. How many has this group played?

Playing a lot is not an indicator of good. Bad teams start bad players every Sunday.

Vrabel knew the player briefly, hoped he had evolved to a better spot when he signed him, then decided he hadn’t and let him walk for peanuts.

At one point Lawrence Taylor and Ray Lewis had never played an NFL snap… does that mean they weren’t as good as Jack Gibbens?

They knew they were losing Gibbens because they wouldn't match what was going to be offered him.

If the Patriots tender Gibbens, he did not have to sign the tender.

He could negotiate with other NFL teams during the RFA signing period.

If another team offered him a contract he preferred, he could sign an offer sheet.

The Patriots would then have the right to match that contract to keep him.

They would have declined.

So we can argue for pages, but Gibbens was going to be offered more than here, whether they knew it, or amazingly not.

Gibbens is a little like Hollins where he serves a need for a year or two, and then moves on to another situation. I agree that they need to find a replacement for Spillane, by developing their own, rather than pay a JAG like him 4.5M, but that doesn't make Gibbens unvaluable in the right situation.

Gibbens was a one year stop gap. He is pretty much as you see him, but there are plenty of NFL players much worse.
