Mike Lombardi resigns as UNC General Manager

Oh, my, I'll never invite him to my tea party. Watch me clutch my pearls. What is this world coming to? Oh dear!!! I prefer the days when my football coaches...
stater you're too much.

No one asked him to be a saint.
I guess for you there is never a red line he can cross because he won 6 super bowls

So anything goes

NCAA is going to hit UNC with the dreaded "lack of institutional control". Wild that Bill seems to find a new way to embarrass himself so frequently.
Doesn't exist anymore. This is NIL era. Anything goes.

You may have noticed: this is NOT an NCAA investigation.

Every single top school has blown past the $20m cap on athlete payments by a factor of 4. They can't police it, they don't even have the authority to police it anymore.

If UNC isn't blowing through NCAA regulations, they are the only major college team complying with them

I would be happy if Charlie Manson out coach if he won 6 SBs. I have absolutely zero interest in players or cis hex personal lives.

But, what if he welched on a bet? I think that is too much, it’s just the sign of a man with no balls.

Your post made me think of how Bill's dad was an assistant coach at Navy for Bill's entire childhood and beyond, which means Bill grew up in Annapolis and was quite familiar with the hazing culture then in full force at the US Naval Academy. Bill graduated high school in Annapolis in 1970, long before anything like political correctness had become a thing. We saw Bill's IDGAF attitude on display for his 20+ years in New England.

I always also wondered if this kind of gave Bill a chip on his shoulder because, while his dad was successful there, he wasn't a USNA grad. There definitely is an old boy's club at USNA (and in the Navy as a whole) that his dad didn't qualify for.

There was a leftward drift by 1970, but it was marginal enough that it was nothing like the rabid leftism today which actively seeks to repress, even criminalize, disagreement, and with whom, given the perfervid obsessiveness and unreflective certainty of any sort of ideologue, no intellectually honest, genuine, adult discussion of issues is possible or even permitted. It's all asinine placard-wavers down at the strip mall, and knuckledragger insults online. Much of the left's attention, too, was directed at the Viet Nam War, so that "social issues" drew less attention than now. One was not supposed to distrust anyone over thirty and you did well to mouth a few feminist platitudes if you you were looking to get with the young ladies of the day: that was about it. I was as conservative/libertarian then as I am now, and I experienced no ostracization, though I was aware of being in the minority of my age bracket. My brother, a few years younger, organized all sorts of protests - lying on Main Street covered in ketchup soaked sheets (My mother was pissed): that sort of thing. But, you know, he was a drummer, so you've got to make allowances.

So if I'm reading this right, is the inference that Steve Belichick had a sexual relationship with a player or someone on the recruiting staff who also may have had a sexual relationship with a player?

I guess we now know why Steve Belichick left the team.

I don’t think you can “read it right” because it’s a report about questions that were supposedly asked. I don’t see actual accusations, just the questions that were part of the investigation.

It's sounding like Steve may have been setting the recruits up with "dates" to curry favor with them and may have partaken in that himself.

Doesn't he know of Bill's mantra of "not being a distraction"?

It implies that by saying questions were asked about it, but doesn’t say ot happened.
But the way, that has been happening forever at every school.

I guess we now know why Steve Belichick left the team.

They also appear to be separate issues and those don’t say it’s about SB.

Via WRAL, lawyers hired to conduct the probe have now focused on Tar Heels defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, who is currently on medical leave.

Steve Belichick previously served as the Patriots’ defensive coordinator, when his father, Bill, was the head coach.

Per the report, investigators are questioning witnesses regarding whether Steve Belichick “used drugs on the job or provided drugs to at least one player.”

The investigation separately is exploring whether an unnamed member of the North Carolina recruiting staff had a sexual relationship with a player, according to the report. Lawyers also have inquired about possible sexual relationships between assistant coaches and the recruiting staff.

And/or why he joined it.

I'd want solid confirmation before I'd bandy this about, though.

When they what, I guess would be the question. I'd be curious to see the rest of this sentence.

Anything goes for now, but at some point aren't parents going to start asking why me and/or my kid is gonna be >>$100k in debt so the kid go to a college whose reputation is somewhere between a whore house and a crack house? Most kids can find that on their own and save them and/or their parents the six figures of debt.

Agree.

"You are the company your keep"
One of the truest sayings all time.
My Mom used to say that.
There was a short period in my young life when I was hanging around with hoodlums.
I never considered myself a hoodlums just someone who had a lot of different type of friends: some jocks, some musicians, some intellectuals etc. One day I woke up after being involved in some illegal crap and I was like " Jeezus what the **** am I doing?!
That was it. It scared me. Didn't want my life to end up like so many other Boston hoodlums. Cut ties and that was that. I'd still be friendly with most of them, even have an occasional beer but that was it.

UNC is investigating this because they want to use it for cause to get out of the contract.

Many teams have tried this before. It all ended up in court, and that's where this is headed.
...
That's really all you need to know about what is going on at UNC right now.

What doesn't fit that picture is Fat Mike resigned.

You usually do that when you know they have the goods on you and are about to fire you for cause.

If it was gonna end up in court and the charges were false, Mike would have made them fire him and then would sue for false termination.

So, maybe Mike is being the fall guy? He didn't want it to end up in court since if UNC could prove Mike was fired for cause then they could fire Bill for not supervising Mike correctly?

Just a theory.

Well that's good - as long as it's not illegal to secure hookers for 17 year olds they have nothing to worry about and surely will say "everyone does it"

Inference may be a bit strong. The reports are that UNC hired lawyers/investigators who asked questions not just about Mike, but also about Steve. These investigators asked direct questions about Steve and drugs. The questions about sex were "unrelated to Steve Belichick' as per the following quote.

Lawyers conducting the UNC probe focused a series of questions on Steve Belichick, according to people who were interviewed. The people said they were also asked about whether Steve Belichick had used drugs at the university’s facilities or if they knew of anyone who had seen him do so. Assistant coaches can be fired for cause if it is found that they used or distributed illicit drugs, according to UNC employment contracts.

Unrelated to Steve Belichick, sources also told WRAL that the lawyer asked about reports of a purported sexual relationship between a female recruiting staff member and at least one UNC player. The people also said they were asked about similar possible relationships between assistant coaches and recruiting staff.

I guess we now know why Steve Belichick left the team.
So far Steve is still UNC's defensive coordinator and is on medical leave. No one has said what the nature of the medical issue is or how long he'll be out.

Some bits from the transcript.

One of the two reporters says:

7:13 one of the questions is about inappropriate relationships or sexual relationships between recruiting staff
7:20 members and and at least one player, other recruiting staff members and up to as many as two um or or at least two uh
7:28 assistant coaches.

So we have one recruiting staff member potentially linked to having relations with at least one player, AND "other recruiting staff members" potentially linked to having relations with at least two assistant coaches. And, again, the linkage is the questions being asked by UNC's investigators, nothing else. But if they are asking those questions, they must have suspicions.

If anyone thinks that this is the first time in the history of college recruiting that a recruit got laid by a "host" (that's the name they give the smoking hot college girls that they have show the recruits around campus) while on a visit, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you!

That being said, BB Jr is obviously in rehab (or at least someplace they can claim is a rehab) to get ahead of whatever punishment is coming his way.

I'm sure most will take Steve at his word that the reason he left is due to a medical issue, and not about an investigation into him as an assistant coach.

After all, getting drugs and hookers for underage recruits is one thing, but lying about the reasons for going on leave would be going too far.
