There has got to be more to this than just losing almost 500K to protect the last player on the roster.

They still had one more preseason IR available.

The team's most likely decisions were (as noted by @rabidfireweasel and @Ring 6):

1. They didn't want to release someone who would have to go through waivers, so they released vets with 4 years who were automatically FAs.The vets most likely agreed to the release and agreed to return.
2. They didn't pay an extra $500k, they only paid the $500k early which was nice because the player was being loyal to the team by being released and promising to return.
3. There are only 8 total season IR/NFIs (designated to return). The preseason allows 2 IR/NFIs, but those preseason designations count towards the 8 total. So the team did not want to use a preseason IR/NFI if they didn't have to because they want to save their IR designations in case they need them later.

I think a bunch of the guys just signed are ST guys. Hunter, Reed, Latu, Britt to the PS, and the Giants LB (forgot his name).

They needed a mechanism to ensure they could take the successful waivers. [edit: but weren’t sure ANY would pass.] They were lining up vets like this (I assume) IN CASE the waiver wire came thru. 2 did. According to one source they put in AT LEAST 3 waivers, but lost on one [a LB] (1+?).

IF TRUE ….. Makes me wonder, WHO WAS THE THIRD vet who they could cut & bring back as required

The cap charge is spread over the length of the contract with 500k charged to 2027. It gets accelerated when he is released. No money changed hands, no extra cost was incurred, the only change was money paid up front and pushed to the future in cap accounting was shifted from a 2027 cap cost to a 2026 cap cost.

Looks like it was Hunter, and after they got the other 2 they pulled back the claim because they didn’t have roster spots yet for 3
