A new study by Mass General, Boston University, and the UNITE Brain Bank found that 24.5% of NFL alum deaths in their sample suffered from CTE.

This is a relatively large, certainly statistically significant, study from the leading institutions with the expertise and access to tissue. They published this week in the Boston Medical Journal. Certainly concerning for how football is currently played. One finding is that it's not the NFL itself - it's the path to the NFL. It's the number of significant blows to the head over time that correlates with CTE. That could reduce, over time, the number of young players choosing to play football.

Or more hopefully lead to better equipment for youth and schools, better rules and enforcement, better treatment and recovery/return to play protocols.

It would be a blessing if it erodes the ultra macho “tough it out” mentality that pervades and perverts our society. However that plays out it will hopefully make things better for future generations.
