18% is beyond ludicrous. He’d get $54M, $59M, $63M based on 2026-2028 projected caps. 3 years, $176 million.

It begs the question how it would be structured. Suppose for the sake of argument, they agreed to a more reasonable 10% of the cap. Does that mean no signing bonus and we simply restructure the deal year by year? Also, is this an extension or would it start immediately?

I’ve been in the Gonzalez camp but this just might be a bridge too far.

That trade looks fantastic on paper but the likelihood that that trade would result in 2 players out of 4 who can actually play at a decent level neither of whom are or ever sniff top 3 at their position in the NFL like Gonzalez.

The Patriots have wasted so much draft capital they finally hit the jackpot on 2 elite ones in back to back years in Gonzalez and Maye and the issue now is they're too good, too expensive

Bedard is talking about multiple things here.

One is clearly ridiculous, the earlier thing he mentions with a permanent % of the cap.

But then he says that if Gonzalez wants the Stingley deal with immediate money this year and next, he's not getting it from the Patriots. They prefer a small bump over the next 2 years and then a bigger contract when he gets his money down the road.

If the Patriots are thinking the latter, they are making a colossal mistake. If the guaranteed money comes 2 years from now, I would not call that an extension.

And if I were Gonzalez, I would obviously be looking at Stingley's deal. $66m of the money for Stingley's new contract of $90m was guaranteed. $48m paid on signing.

If I'm hearing Bedard correctly, the Patriots do NOT want to do a Stingley type deal with Gonzalez.

When Kraft says he will be the highest paid CB in history, it could mean anything. It could mean he has the biggest total deal on offer, but it could be backloaded. It could mean the highest annual, but starting when? 2028? We don't know.

The report here by Bedard makes both Gonzalez and the Krafts seem unreasonable, and actually kind of loopy. Both of them.

what we are hearing is he is not looking to reset the market
he is looking to change how the market is paid.
as I said, very bad advice to take a $100m+ gamble

That is SOOOOO shallow, that I weep for his generation. Why can't they just be happy being EXTREMELY highly paid for playing a HS sport. It seems so individual and self-centered for a game that is so TEAM oriented, where so much of one's individual success depends on 10 other players doing their jobs.

What I think the poster means is that the Pats have his rights for 2026, option year 2027 and two franchise tag years. However, it won’t get to that point. He doesn’t have to sign the first tag and would just force a trade at that point. I don’t even know what team would want to deal with that, so he would get his wish.
