Why not 7 WR's on the opening day roster?

If they can find WR’s who can block and tackle on special teams they could easily carry seven. It will also depend if they think they can slide a guy like Crownover to the PS without losing him.

That's basically the decision. Keep a Crownover or a 7th WR to develop.

Also how Dippre looks because without a trade, I don't think one of those 3rd TE's is staying.

It's really who has the most potential regardless of position. That's sort of the point of the thread.

Maybe, there’s still a lot of training camp left to determine what the final roster spots are going to come down to.

Depends… we’ll see. Nothing is determined yet.

I think DeGennaro for example will have to continue thriving…. which he has, and has done so with all three QB’s. If he continues to produce through joint practices and preseason, they won’t be able to hide him from the world.

At that point the Boutte truthers will have to explain to us why we should cut a faster, better, cheaper WR for a guy we’re going to lose next offseason anyway.

And....
it is far more likely than not that guys that hit the PS (use DeG as an example, or Chism) don't get signed by another team to their 53.

Putting too much on his plate, having him trying to do too much when he isn’t doing any of it well is not the best path to excellence.
Get him snaps and experience, it all helps.
Getting him experience at not playing well trains him to be good at not playing well.
He has to keep pushing, learning, improving… this is how training camp works for rookies.
Piling too much on him doesn’t help him learn and improve, it has the opposite effect. He learns to fail. Not what we want.

In a perfect world were all top 4 WRs are always available, yes the importance of your 5th and 6th guy diminish greatly.
However that's not reality.
#5 and 6 could easily be #4/5, or even 3/4 with some bad injury luck.
I think we keep 6, the 6 I outlined unless we trade Boutte, which could happen but I think that would be a big mistake for 2026.
I’m sorry I may not have been clear. Which 2 of 5-7 you keep is inconsequential there isn’t a dramatic difference in the teams prospects by keeping any 2 of the 3. Surely don’t need all 3.
If you are concerned about health keep the 2 that can provide the most today if not keep the ones who are more likely to help in the future.

I agree with you.

It’s early, he’s young….
Lots of players are ruined by being mishandled when they’re young.

You’re usually better than this, but this time you’re laying a real clinker.

Right.
I believe we have legit SB hopes, I don’t want to sacrifice this year for 2027 and beyond. So I prefer we keep the guys that are more ready to help today if needed.
We have young UDFAs with potential, but those types are legitimately available as UDFAs every year.

The top 4 depends if it is a man or zone defense.

Layering in the fact that anyone who we don’t think belongs in the best 6 today is very unlikely to ever amount to anything anyway

DeGennaro wouldn't be more than a development project like Chism/Williams last year. He wouldn't replace Boutte.

I agreed with your point of trading Boutte before training camp, but the strongest part of your argument is gone. Boutte has been a great teammate, not a malcontent. He has no problem being here.

It would be crazy to trade Boutte now unless we win the exchange.

Simply not true.

How rookies barely starting their development compare to fully developed players in their prime says nothing about the rookies’ potential to develop into NFL players good enough to have a long career.

A player who can’t crack the top 6 WRs is never gong to amount up anything.
There aren’t 6 studs there

You’re wrong.

Just because a guy isn’t one of the best today doesn’t mean he won’t be one of the best next year.

But you’re too stubborn to see it so it’s not worth arguing the point with you.

Maye elevates these guys as well.
other teams recognize that.
plus, Boutte, Pop and Hollins are all in their final contract year.
has Williams shown anything to warrant getting something more than a 3rd or 4th in return? is anyone giving up anything for Chism?

but that player need not be a stud.
he only has to be comfortable in this offense, with this QB, and do his job for his salary
we saw Hollins, Boutte and Pop combine for 1500+ yards last season, for under $12m in total dollars.
none were studs. all were very good last year.

Williams was a 3 who had a better than normal 3 rookie year. There is a good chance he has a good future here.
Chism would end up on a practice squad if we cut him. He has zero trade value. He should end up in our practice squad.

I am saying a WR who you would be afraid to make one of your top 6 in this group is not likely to be one that is goood enough to ever have value.

The chances that a 7th WR would contribute anything, ever this year are slim.

To say we want to keep 7 WRs is to say:
FIFY. Apart from timeframe you’re right, and my point is that we are constructing the roster for this year not for eternity.

To say we want to keep 7 WRs is to say we are collecting talent not building a team designed to win. We’d be keeping receivers just because we think they’re good or are going to be good someday, not because they give us the best offense for winning now and sustaining that winning into next year. Sustaining it into next year is what makes it tricky, because of expiring contracts.
[lots of good discussion fodder deleted for brevity]

We have too many needs at other positions to keep extra WRs because fans know their names more than the players in the trenches who really are more important
Part of the problem may be that we are thin at other positions especially backup so there are no players for fans to be excited about keeping. Plus those other positions aren’t as exciting as WR. So we have fans wanting to collect WR talent not building a winning team. It’s the Madden Fantasy Football effect, in real life.

I expect him to practice and eventually play better. We’re halfway through camp, a fair amount of time to improve.
