Brain Burns had 16.5 sacks last year as an OLB and very rarely ever dropped into coverage.
Would a good run player with 16.5 sacks be ok with you, or do you want to be this forums new Sam, and just look for every sliver of negativity you can find?

There is virtually no such thing as a 4-3 or 3-4 any more. Nickel is base.

It’s a 4-2 or a 3-3. 4 players rush, 2 off the ball LBs cover (or blitz) along with 5 dbs.

So throw out the zone pressure packages and exotic pressures and go with your analogy...great...thx.

His job will be rushing the passer, setting the edge and making plays on the ball carrier in the running game so that is what I would grade him on. OLB is a misnomer for Jacas and a bunch of Edge players who get the label today. He's not a linebacker, he's on the line. Edge or Defensive End is more appropriate and I don't want to drop our DE into coverage.

If we're looking at general responsibilities any OLB might be tasked with, we could say

• Rushing the passer
• Setting the edge
• Picking up some coverage responsibilities in the passing game

You're likely looking at 2 different options which can cover 2 of the 3:

1. A smaller 240-250 athletic rusher who can rush the passer and maybe cover a bit, but lacks the size and strength to set the edge, or
2. a bigger 260+ power rusher who can hold up in the run game and set the edge, but lacks the athleticism to provide anything in pass coverage.

Jacas is obviously the latter, which is far more likely to provide value on 3 downs vs the former which are more likely to be passing down specialists.

Sure, coverage would be a nice luxury addition but pretty much bottom of anyone else’s priority list and not where he’s gonna earn his money. Pressure the quarterback, shut down the run to your side.

It’s not an analogy it’s a correction of your post.
350 Lb DTs end up in a zone coverage some times in an exotic blitz.
That is no more “covering a rb” than the few times a 43 DE/34 OLB drop into coverage.

He didn't have to, he took 2 Lineman, so we had an advantage on the backside.
No way was he trying to stop a RB on average downs, he stopped them when they they thought they had a hole
It wasn't his job.

He was usual awful self. He’s now been with two better coaches which was what he wanted after scapegoated Mayo as the sole reason he can’t shed T’s. Playing for Saleh, he scored a whopping 1.5 sacks in 2025.

He got shot in the ankle earlier this year. He’s still recovering from it. It’s going to delay the inevitable of him getting cut eventually.
