I may be overly cynical but my first thought was that putting Jacas on the NFI might be an attempt to strengthen justification for how the team treated his injury during rookie minicamp and contract negotiations.

Easily. The person who posted it got it wrong. Hence Jacas being put on the NFI. Lazar isn't not a part of the Patriots PR department. He's a media person who happens to cover the team.. These people get things wrong all the time.

He's a draft pick. By definition, that makes him a project. What so many people ignore is that Jacas was not a one trick pony coming out of college. He varied his Speed and Power games evenly. He studied his opponent and developed a game plan on how to set them up and beat them. I haven't seen anyone say that Jacas is going to be an ALL-PRO day one. Not even me. And I think I'm probably his biggest fan on this board.

Jacas will have his growing pains. However, when you look at his game, he rarely made the same mistake. He was constantly improving and leading his teammates to improve. He's going to have to earn his stripes just like every other rookie that walks through the doors of Foxboro.

NFI means that the injury occurred while doing NON-NFL related activities. I don't believe it has any affect on contract obligations unless he stays there and is never activated during the year.

AI is correct in that aspect. While I can't be 100% positive, I think it's highly unlikely that Jacas' agent would have allowed Jacas to sign the contract without knowing full well Jacas was heading to the NFI. I also think it's unlikely that Jacas's agent would have allowed the signing if the signing bonus and guaranteed money was going to be withheld.

I was referring to players who end up on NFI in camp and don't come off having their contracts tolled. Meaning they have to re-do the year at the same price.

Rochrist made an excellent point when he pointed out that Jacas role this year is likely to be as a designated pass rusher, a position that does not require a lot of time to at least be effective. It's like RB where your either can do it or you can't. Time and experience will of course improve one's skills, but it's not like being a QB where you can come into the league and be your best right from the start.

If his time on the NFI is just a week or so (or less, we hope), then this will be much ado about nothing, just like his delayed signing was. However, I am having a hard time understanding the kid I saw squatting tons and doing it correctly (unlike the secretary of defense) with someone who has a knee injury bad enough to keep him from practicing. I sincerely hope that over the next couple of days we get some clarification on what is exactly keeping out of practice and when it happened

Actually what's ******** is your " the team is always right" argument. Team doctors and trainers have a long history of ****ing up players health and lives. Brady clearly rejected team training methods and was even seen in his own documentary trying to get Edelman to reject them as well. Lack of trust on team methods s what has led so many players to go their own way training, and rejecting team training and rehab in no way means a player is in the wrong.

It was always to Jacas benefit to sign the deal. Or at least the player protection agreement.

Simply put - If a player is rehabbing an injury and gets hurt, who is responsible?
If they are acting with the permission of the team, the player is contractually protected because the team usually has insurance in place to make sure they are indemnified.

If a player - like Jacas rehabbing on his own - then they are not protected via contract clauses or team indemnification insurance. The team owes them nothing. Tough break kid you will never get those dollars back.

A participation agreement says that the team will continue to bargain in good faith with the player and will not hold any injury that occurs during Team activities against him when they reach an agreement on the player's rookie deal.

Since you missed it. The TEAM didn't offer a Participation agreement to Jacas. So how could he have refused to sign it?

why? because of the injury. An even better reason to sign his deal earlier.
