Bears are betting favorites to land Crosby by a wide margin.

The Pats can trade for Crosby AND build out the roster if they wish. Don't act like if they trade for Crosby, they are done with building. It isn't either trade for Crosby or build out the roster.
Agreed.

BTW, what do you think would be Crosby's 2026 cap hit?

Trading for Crosby would absolutely help the Pats move towards their goal of winning a Super Bowl. But there isn't a move or series of moves that can guarantee a Super Bowl win.

Again, the Pats could assemble a historically top team and not win the Super Bowl. See the 2007 Patriots.
They THINK it would if they do. If they don’t they were wrong and very likely would be better off building out a roster for the long term.

No it doesn’t work that way. The resources used for Crosby are removed from those they can build the roster out with.
They will have less premium picks and 30 million less to it with.

Crossby is coming out of injury. How do we know he is the same player.
uh, you do know that when you trade for a player, you give him a physical before the deal is considered final, right?

Acting like picking 31st is the same as previous years picking 3rd and 4th.

Yes, he'll pass a physical.

It is much harder to determine whether his production over the next 4 years will be at the level of his past production.

After all, that's what we expect when we give a 1st and $30m AAV.

Huh? It’s not Crosby or no.
It’s Crosby or all of the picks traded for him PLUS all of the players the cap space could have signed.

I get that, but don't act like the Pats only have enough resources to trade for Crosby. He has no guranteed money coming with him other than this year's salary. But the Pats can easily convert most of that into a signing bonus to push the cap money into future years. From cap perspective, Crosby might only cost a few million dollars this year.

Agreed.

Currently, it would be $30 million. His base salary is guranteed next week I think and without negotiations, it would count 100% towards this year's cap. But it is the last of his guaranteed money. The Pats could easily convert most of that money into a signing bonus and spread it out over the life of the contract and even add voidable years.

Doubt they would do the max which would be about $29 million. My guess is they might renegotiate it to lower cap hits in later years too. So I am guessing that the Pats would renegotiate it somewhere into a $5-10 million cap hit this year.

I am not a capologist. So don't take my estimates as hard fact.

I don't think physical can really predict how they do . Campbell passed his physical but was a shell of himself in playoffs. Von miller passed physicals and was virtually useless. Same goes with bosa too .

Physicals to get back on the field and whether or not to trade or sign a player are very different things.

When a doctor examines an injured player on the team, they are looking to see if they are healthy enough to play without reinjuring themselves or cause more damage. When a doctor examines a player who the team are looking to acquire, they are looking to see if an injury has any long term implications that could make the player be far less of a player in the short and/or long term.

There is no reason to believe it won't.

If you mean Von Miller in Buffalo, he was 5 years older at that time than Crosby is now.

It is hilarious how so many people are saying there is absolutely no way to predict how Crosby will perform, as if the #31 pick in the draft is a surefire sure thing.

Newsflash: It is sports. Nothing is certain. But realistically speaking, you have far, far more certainty with Crosby than you do with #31.

The resource needed for #31 is much lower than Crossby.

I know the Krafts are hurting after getting $720 million for selling 8% of the team, but I am talking about the cap. The Pats could spend whatever they want in real dollars. As for the cap, his contract can be easily manipulated.

And we don't even know what the compensation will be at this point. If it ends up being a first and second, I would say Crosby is worth more than that based on where the Pats are picking.

I can whiff on #31 and still be okay.

I whiff on crossby and 2 draft picks . That's a 70 million dollar mistake coupled with 2 draft picks. Pulls us back by 3-4 years. And by then maye contract starts and you cannot build the team .

So lets be wise and evaluate all risks before we do this . Hendrickson is a relatively safer choice.

I'd rather pay a lot for a great player than pay a little for a poor one.

There's no "whiffing" on Crosby. We know what he is.

That's an entirely different argument.
