Unconfirmed: Speculation on Maye having shoulder injury

Nothing a cortisone shot can't heal for a Game. Maye's going to have to pass for
300 or more for us to win.
Like Bo Nix had?

SMH.

If there is physical damage compromising his shoulder cortisone ain’t gonna restore strength. Mild sprains, maybe a rotator cuff injury, perhaps he could get away with it. I saw one, think it was Dr. Morse, suggest a possible labrum tear. I’m not an expert but I can’t imagine a torn muscle not having strength affected in some way. Then the questions are how much and in what way and how does that affect play. But definitely something a cortisone shot can’t heal.

That’s why it’s a big deal.

I'd rather pound the rock with Stevenson and a sprinkle of Hendo too if I'm being honest.
Need the threat of passing. We’ve seen Hendo and even Stevenson rendered ineffective already in these playoffs. Ain’t gonna win just by pounding the rock.

Make sure to spread this on every sports forum and social media you can find.

Dr. Chao is a lot of things but he has been spot on on many injuries just based on how he watches films. Watch the interaction with Wilson getting to the end here. Hmmm…

Was that Drake mic’d up saying “That’s how you do that!”?
[didn’t sound like him to me ]

@sb1 you need to change the headline of the thread. its conjecture not fact. the lead to the thread should reflect that
It fooled me (not difficult to do). That's why I rushed over here as soon I finished shoveling.

I think it's pretty obvious he did slightly injure his shoulder, but the available evidence would suggest it's not something that is likely to hinder him much in a game that's two weeks away. I mean it's the Super Bowl, he doesn't need to play an entire season managing the injury.

Go to NFL Network now and watch the replay, if his right shoulder was hurt, no way he makes the first down signal after his game winning run
Looking at it as a former baseball coach for many years, I thought he slightly short armed that signal.

Upon further review, he probably is hurt to some extent. Luckily, we have two weeks until the game.

This is still the worst type of internet sports doctoring. Chao's evidence is very weak. No way can or should he say Maye definitely has an injury. If he's been in the medical tent or on the injury report fair enough, but saying it like he's sure based on some videos is bullsh*t.

1) Basing a theory off Maye didn't throw much after that 3Q sack is wierd. Maye threw a 25 yard pass straight after (which was the longest from either QB in the second half) a throw away when Boutte was double covered, and one more incompletion, and was due to pass again on another play that was a nasty sack. I actually thought the Q4 sack was nastier on the shoulder as it was two players and he got spun on the shoulder. I mean the Pats were leading the game in a snowstorm. The D had the Broncos offense completely shut down. Multiple field goals were missed, punts were going everywhere. Stidham threw because they had to, but he was 4/10 for 10 yards and an interception in the second half. Stevenson was running the ball at 69y on 21 carries in the second half and they were burning clock. The game plan was run run run, the Pats didn't need a risk the pass.

2) Not sure I buy the rolling his shoulder around before the flea flicker either. It's just as the play call for the longest pass play of the half comes in, in a half where he has rarely passed the ball, in cold weather. More likely warming it up.

3) Running in to the tunnel. He uses the right arm several times giving stuff to the fans in the video.

4) Press conference. Meh, clutching at straws. He grasps the table, and uses his left hand exclusively to touch his face, but I've seen him do that in other post games. He also slaps the podium a few times with his right arm as he walks off. The shoulder lower thing Chao says is rubbish.

5) If Maye was injured on that play, he never went to the blue tent. There was never a sideline report the medical team had looked at him (and they were looking as they said this about Stidham in Q4 after a slide), and they sent him up to collect the trophy, and no reports of any xrays etc after the game. So that would mean Maye didnt tell any of the Pats staff during or immediately after the game, and called his own number on the vital play. In which he handed off a player.

The video of him wincing with his wife is slightly odd though.

I really don't like Chao's analysis. Bumps and bruises including the shoulder sure, maybe even a small injury showing up on the report. But speculating on more is sensationalist, he's said it like its 100% fact when in fsct he is guessing with minimal weak evidence, and it is done solely for notoriety and clicks in the news frenzy of the superbowl.

Relax! It’s gonna be the remake of Robert Redford’s, “The Sting”… 1) Bump, bruise, & rumor, 2) Pre-SB warmups, NO tight spirals or any throw longer than 35 yards (tears in the eyes optional if a Seattle player/coach is nearby), 3) First offensive play from the 30, play action, hit Kyle Williams on the fly 60 yards down the right sideline for a 7-0 start! Seahawks in shock - Pats go on to a 38-13 7th SB WIN!!

I had always thought dr chaos reports on ‘truly injured’ ( that is, guys carted off field or actually listed as out in the game) to be fairly accurate. Not a channel subscriber so maybe never saw his misses. But this guy [Dr Sutterer] seems REALLY CREDIBLE.

THANKS Tommy. Now I can sleep at night.
This video perfectly sums it up.

I don’t doubt he probably had soreness from that play. But there’s a big difference between soreness and injured. We cannot confirm he’s injured based on that play.

I can tell you an executive in the front office would love for this story to make the rounds for two weeks.

Edit: and don't put it past Vrabel to include a P-Shoulder on the injury report just for his own entertainment.
Didn’t BB list Brady on the report for years with “shoulder”?

In that cold weather, with the exposure, you could also have muscle spasms. I once skiied into a huge drift where I was covered head to toe. The problem wasn't getting out of it but the fact that my entire upper body seized up. (Not saying this happens every time because I've also experienced bolting out of a European sauna and diving into snow & I was OK). But the extreme cold can do things to people.

Edit - for those who don't want to watch, this MD doesn't see clear evidence of a shoulder 'injury', and also calls out Dr Chao.

I don't have x/Twitter, so I've never really followed Dr. Chao.

I watch YouTube a lot though, and I follow a different MD who comments on sports injuries.

Here's what he thinks about Drake Maye's shoulder.

A bruise is an injury I guess… if you’re a wussy.

I’ve never known Dr. Chao to be wrong.

(I’ve never known him to be right either, because I’ve never heard of the guy).
He’s always 100% correct, in his own mind.

Honestly I think Chao did us a favor here.

This is all over the internet now. Vrabel will lean into it, stay tight-lipped about it and end up putting Drake on the injury report with a shoulder injury. He may even have him take two snaps off and then list him as "limited".

There will continue to be fervor and chatter about it. Meanwhile, the Pats will know nothing is really wrong.

Seattle will create a game plan that is somewhat based upon the idea that Drake's shoulder isn't 100%... and then NE will take advantage of that. And it's all fine, since the Patriots are not the one that seeded the rumor.

"Hurt" vs. "Injured"

I doubt he's truly injured, otherwise he wouldn't be carrying around his bags in his right hand coming off the plane. You could explain away his right arm stiff arm, right arm first down pump as adrenaline, but day after if you are truly injured you aren't putting more load on that shoulder.

Maybe it's possible he has a slight posterior capsule sprain as that other twitter Doc speculates, but two weeks out he should be fine by gametime.

Maybe we are all wrong and he's gonna have to be 2019 Lamar to win this game. Who knows? All I know is if he starts out the Super Bowl looking shaky and inaccurate we are all gonna do the Boston sports fan doomer takes and we will probably all be wrong haha

If they put together a game plan with the assumption Maye is healthy, and Maye really isn't, could the Patriots somehow use that to their advantage? Call me crazy, but what if MacDaniels dials up three or four plays with both Dobbs & Maye in the game?

As a side, Vrabel's answer is concerning. I thought this report was junk until his press conference. Is it possible Maye has been hurt through these playoffs. Thus, the drop off in play? Maybe he hurt it more in Denver.
