Yeah, I was thinking about this earlier too. Even putting the legal issues out of your mind, his play has been so-so. You would have expected a huge leap from him playing next to Williams, but it hasn't materialized. As you said, maybe some of that is attributed to the medical (it's a surprise he came back from that at all, after all). Even so, at his salary, he needs to be a big-time difference maker to keep around. He hasn't been bad, but has not been remotely as good as his pay rate. Add in his propensity to get into a bit of trouble when looking at his prior police run-in and this, and it doesn't help his case.
Looking at his contract, 2026 is an ideal time to get out of it. He has a $12M salary, but only $2M is guaranteed. However, it becomes fully guaranteed if he is on the roster on the 3rd day of the 2026 league year. So they are incentivized to dump him before then and save that $10M. They would have about $10M in dead money, but gain ~$6M in cap space - and his ~$24M in cap hits in 2027 and 2028 each would come off the books, which is another $48M they can put towards new contracts for the next few seasons.
