MVP thread

Stafford also won't his division! The last QB to not win his division and win MVP I believe was Peyton in 2008. I personally don't care for the regular season MVP because I think the award is cursed. I know Mahomes broke it a couple years ago
The reason I hate awards is because they're mostly politics of some kind. Stafford over Maye for MVP is not about performance.

And the reason PEDton won in 2008 was because of the rules at the time...

And it's a take we share, but I understand people backing Stafford.
There's a ton of stats we can slide and dice.
I just heard a stat that Maye has played the easiest defensive schedule, Stafford has played the 2nd toughest.
Those things will be evaluated with the same weight as strength of offensive weapons.
That's all I'm saying, there are arguments for both.

He's in the best division in the league so I think that tilts the SOS heavily.

What's his record against Seattle and the niners? 2 and 2?

There are arguments for and against both.

It would not be an injustice if either won.

Yup, 2-2 and both those are playoff teams.
Maye is 1-1 against playoff teams in our division.
So essentially the same.

It's just odd that SOS didn't prevent Warner from winning MVP with their historically easy schedule.

And it might not for Maye, but it will be one of the variables that gets discussed and weighted.

I would love for Drake to win it but I think it will go to Stafford as sort of a career achievement award. I think the voters will likely lean toward the veteran.
I think in the context of value to the team, we would be nowhere without Drake's performance. The only other player I could see is McCaffrey.

I swear to Christ, after the last 5 years proving definitively that Brady was if anything *underrated* by the fans because of all the Patriot Way crap shoved down our throats I would have thought that we'd be past the people saying the cliched "its a team sport why single anyone out" crap. The QB really is that important and without Maye this team is .500 at BEST. He's the MVP and I want him to get it.
He has had a remarkable season, performance-wise, record-wise and statistically. He's been head and shoulders above every other QB for most of the season. Considering his convoluted beginning it makes it all even more incredible.

I'm with you. I don't get into awards, but as another poster said, call it the MayeVP.

He deserves it basically because his closest competition was his own teammate

This is true, but like all the things it's dynamic and has changed pretty significantly.
You can only play who you play, but SF has played a much tougher schedule.
Using the current power rankings of each team's opponents, below is the list of the potential playoff teams opponents for each quarter of the season and overall.

As much as we hate to hear it the Pats schedule really has been the easiest by far They're well ahead of #31 Denver.

For sure.
It's been a historically easy schedule.
There is not fault in that, this isn't college, you don't get to pick your opponents, you play who you play.
But to completely dismiss it is just putting on the rose coloured glasses.

Winning two SBs is hard to ignore.

Sucks that it was us both times.
Jim Plunkett is a good comp for Eli. He should not be in the HOF.

Manning had a worse career but won 2
Correction: Manning won 1 and had his corpse dragged to another by the Denver defense.

I think Stafford has more than Maye to work with but Maye has faced an easier slate of opponents. Don't think it's really debatable on either point.

I know this is sacrilegious as a Pats fan, but the fan/sentimental/emotional side of me actually leans towards voting Stafford because it's neck in neck and it's hardly any sure bet he'll ever have a legit MVP chance again at 37 years old. Always been a player I liked and respected and I think it'd be pretty cool for him to get an MVP to add to his achievements (probably puts him in HOF if he isn't already). IDK, that's the way my heart strings kind of tug on this one, and I'd bet the voters agree. So I think they'll be kind of looking for reasons to vote Stafford.

Bottom line for me:
Based on this year I think Maye should win it.
While also realizing we are also Pats fans here, and while we all like to think we are objective, bias will certainly work it's way into our opinions.
You can make the case for both guys, and whoever wins it will be deserving and it won't be some grand conspiracy.
Really, the only way you can make a case for Stafford is the TDs. Most everything else favors Maye, including the respective rosters, where the teams are going to finish, etc.

Plus, Maye has a better record against common opponents.

Yes, Orlovsky has a vote.

Last year the voters included Tom Curran and Ben Volin, as well as Brady and Bruschi.

In any case, the actual individual ballots will likely be made public. . . .
An award that has Volin involved is kind of invalid from the get-go.

Strength of schedule has never, ever been a consideration on mvp voting.

I would expect nothing less than that opinion on a Pats forum.
Go check a Rams forum, I'm sure they are justifying Stafford as the MVP.
Listen and read media reports, including those that have MVP votes, it's completely up in the air.
Of course you are pointing out things that lean Maye's way.
What about Maye playing the easiest defensive schedule in the league, and Stafford playing the 2nd toughest.
I've already said I think Maye is deserving, but you are leaving out things that favour Stafford, things that will be considered.
