NFL GAME DAY DISCUSSION Bears at Eagles on Amazon Prime

NFL has been dynastic for 50 years for the most part.

A couple of years of transition until the true players establish themselves for the next run is to be expected.

I've been watching since the 90's and have noticed the overall quality of the game has gotten close to unwatchable since 2020. I'd say the worst years prior to 2020 were 2000, 2005 and 2008. 2000 looked like the league was going downhill after all the 90's teams were getting old, but quickly bounced back in 2001. Same with the other years.

I think a lot of it has to do with:

- Rule changes.
- Player's union with practices.
- Lack of talent is glaring.
- Lack of intelligence and schemes look to have been dumbed down. Every team looks the same. QB's are assisted by G's communicating with the C. Tom Brady mentioned young QB's coming out of college don't want to line up under C because they don't like reading a defense back peddling after the snap or turning their backs to a defense off play action.
- it's extremely rare for a HC to get hired on merit. We used to always hear about assistant coaches known for something, but now random guys you've never heard of keep getting hired out of nowhere.
- Analytics are seriously ruining the game.

I die laughing every time there's a terrible PI call or something and everyone just spams 'glorp'.

It's also, just like as a sociological thing, interesting to see how younger fans watch and consume the game.

Maybe the refs feel if they don’t make calls the league will see them as not doing their jobs?

Kind of like a manager will create busy work if there is really no need for them?

It's not the refs on the field, it's the league and replay. No matter how good the refs are, they're gonna miss things. There's 20-30 plays in every game where there's a bad call, missed call, bad spot, bad judgment, or a bad rule getting exposed. These could easily be corrected by a sky judge if the right resources were devoted to every game. The league just doesn't gaf. As a fan, I don't mind brief pauses to catch these.

The bad rules include what's a catch, what's a touchdown, fumble going through the ez, various PI scenarios, etc. Introduce different levels of penalty yardage for PI, holding, and Unsportsmanlike (like they used to for face mask), and some should not be automatic 1st downs.

There's also many offenses that are technically penalties but not relevant to the outcome of the play so should be dismissed - e.g., the OPI on Hollins in the ez, or a hold on the far other side of the field from the play, or if a ball is uncatchable (which they never seem to call).

Also some player safety issues like head hunting a ball carrier, pushing ball carriers ahead, etc. While they're at it, make the players wear better pads, and research better knee braces.

Many, many things the league could easily do to promote a fairer outcome.

That's another major point I forgot to add. Way too many mediocre players are getting paid that set up for their families for generations. Also, these player contracts have gotten so out of hand that the desire for winning is going extinct. This is something that is seriously lacking. The most passion I've seen after a loss was Stefon Diggs visibly angry after the Bills once again flamed out in the playoffs against the Bengals. The media and fans were gas lit by the Bills organization saying he was a problem. He wasn't a problem in Minnesota, Houston and now NE.

I grew up an Eagles fan. Many of my friends are still Eagles fans. That’s due to an accident of geography, being born not far outside Philly. I was lucky, I moved around and learned there is more to the world. Those who didn’t are not deserving of your insults just because they didn’t.

Clearly this was a bit tongue of cheek, though Eagles fans are an awful fan base on the whole. I am not saying there are not good individual Eagles fans, most probably are fine. But the % of absolute Jerks among Eagles fans is unusually high. The culture instilled in the fandom is really bad.

They have a horrible reputation for a reason. And all due respect to the good ones, if they don't like it they should try to enforce good behavior among their fellow fans. Clearly they are not doing well enough.

When the Falcons played the Pats, Pats fans were rightfully critical of the high school level "pony" offense that Michael Penix was forced to play in. The Falcons were last in the league in running play action. After Penix blew out his knee and Kirk Cousins started against New Orleans, suddenly he was under center and they were back to running a lot of play action. The initial reaction of Falcons fans was that Penix was incapable of lining up under center.

However, I heard the Falcons beat writer for the Athletic on the radio here in Atlanta and he had a totally different explanation. He said that the plan in the preseason was to have Penix under center most of the time. However, the Falcons starting right tackle Kaleb McGary and his backup Storm Norton were both knocked out for the year in the preseason and the Falcons have been playing a backup guard named Elijah Wilkinson at right tackle. Predictably, he sucks. The Falcons didn't want the southpaw Penix turning his back to a right tackle who would make Vederian Lowe look like an all-pro. Once the right-handed Cousins started, his blind side was being protected by Jake Matthews and he could play under center.
