NFL Trade Deadline Discourse

Yep, and this team is improving dramatically as players adjust to the new schemes. Nothing's likely, but anything's possible.
Someone was saying they put a small bet on Pats to make the Super Bowl when the odds were really long and if they hit, they were going to use the winnings to fund the trip. I thought that was really heady.

I'd go one of these two ways -

A) Swing for the fences on a superstar so good that it can make you a Super Bowl contender both now and also for the next several years
B) Short of that, just target solid players at positions of need that could be had for low cost and aren't too old. Guys mentioned like Wright, Hubbard etc would be perfect.
Anyone have any thoughts on a guy (LB or S) who can cover tight ends? That's where we're getting killed on defense right now.

While I agree to an extent : let’s rebuild via the draft, as well as free agency….. if there is a useful vet who becomes available to NE for peanuts (salary dump / last year of the contract), why not ?

While I don’t think NE is championship caliber - the league is down, they are 6-2, and the QB has been fire.

Agree 100% and I think it’s key to how the Pats approach the trade deadline.

Some years there’s a really dominant, complete team. I don’t think that’s true this year. Whoever wins, there will be 4-5 fan bases who think they had a better team.

No reason we can’t be the last team standing. Wouldn’t morgage the future, but I wouldn’t mind seeing an agressive approach

Just out of curiosity, what makes you think they are not Championship caliber this year?
I’d say that they are much closer than I thought they’d be.

I don’t get the sense they can get a big stop bs a quality opponent on a consistent basis. I don’t think the D - given a 2 point lead with 2min to go WILL stop Mahomes or Allen in the AFFCG. They have pieces. Williams and Gonzo, in particular, give me hope. In 2004 & 2018, I was super confident that someone would make a big play to seal a win. Don’t feel quite the same about this team.

Maybe I’m still thinking about early games (LV in particular), but…

I agree on the D, they need another difference maker, and to me that is a "put fear in the O" edge rusher.
So if we could add that via trade this year, don't you think we could be championship caliber?
I do.

I think that addition would make NE a definite 2025-26 contender. One of a select few that has a shot.

Do you agree w me that the league seems a bit ‘down’ this year ? I’m not sure this team can hang w the 2016 Patriots, nor the best KC teams…

No worries on that score. When the subject is WR's you've shown time and again you are a highly motivated and vigorous self starter

I don't know if the league is down.
KC is rounding into the best team in the league, to one's surprise, at least not mine.
Bills and Ravens (esp the Ravens) have been crippled with injuries.
Eagles are up and down, but they've lived like that the last couple of years.
GB, Det, Rams, TB, Denver, Seattle.... good.
Then we have the upstarts like us and the Colts.
Overall I think the league is just as strong, only difference would be a couple of really good teams having to deal with a lot of injuries.
I do agree that SB seems to be more open regarding the number of teams that could win it.
At the end of the day, KC looks like the odds on fav to me right now....as painful as that is to say.

You guys het Diva WR's: I'm the opposite I love em.
That’s goes with the territory. Most if not all top WR in this league are some kind of divas.

The real question is when do you add them?

If we are taking about a top 5 WR in the league go for it right away no question asks but adding a head case like Pickens at the start of building a new culture isn’t the best move imo. If you want to do it 5 years in when you have a strong culture and players leadership in place that can work.

One of the bright spot this year is how well that WR room meshed together. I would be wary to touch that.

hear, hear!
Couldn't agree more, our passing game is a huge strength, no need to mess with it.

I want the team to husband its resources with respect both to draft picks and cap space. They might find an upgrade for 3.4 yds/carry, fumble-prone Rhamondre. I mean that level of RB are a dime-a-dozen, right?

Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like Pettus can do it but he was being kept off the game day active roster by Dugger. I guess we'll see. There's probably still an upgrade out there.

Are we using ‘husband’ as a verb on this forum ? Urge to yell “WITCH !!! Kill the intellectuals !” rising….

I think if Pettus could do it, Vrabel would have had no problems sitting Dugger.

I dont think the problem was Pettus was the better option than Dugger, its that Dugger was no anywhere close to his contract.

It was better to get the cap savings with a slight drop off in play.

You cant pay your 3rd string safet over 14 mil a year.

Agreed. I just think if a trade is coming, I think S/LB who can cover TEs is an absolute need. But there are also going to be some really good options in the draft, so they may decide to sit tight.

Anyone else think that Mapu watched White and Dugger go out the door and think that he's next?

By AFCCG will defenses be able to stop Maye in this situation?
