NFL Trade Deadline Discourse

Feels unlikely, but Addison is a VERY good player who would unlock another level of the offense. A trio of Boutte-Diggs-Addison is perfect, with all three guys being able to play all three spots. Diggs and Addison can beat man very well, and Boutte is strong and can wall off guys with his body, good with high/jump balls.

He’s only making around $4M this year and next year, and you can pick up his fifth year option for 2027 as well to the tune of around $17M. So you have him under contract for another 2.5 years for a total of around $23M. Extremely cheap for what he is, and he’s still very very young.

Minnesota desperately needs a back up QB. I understand this is classic pats fans “take this guy I don’t want and a fifth,” but this wonder if the deal isn’t Dobbs and a pick for Addison

Absolute S**T return for White. If Wolf orchestrated this then he needs to be fired. This is the 2nd deal after Milton that he got garbage.
Garbage out, garbage in.

That sounds optimistic. Addison for Dobbs and a pick. We need Oline, RB, Edge, LB, Safety ahead of WR glitter.

It just makes no sense for the Vikings for all the reasons you said and more. He was the 23rd overall pick. He has been a terrific player on the other side of Jefferson. There is a huge QB problem and the Vikings want JJ to take over. It would be just silly to trade his #2 weapon. The Pats are paying a 1st for him right now. He has not broken 1000 yards in a season. No one is paying anything for him.

Perhaps you misunderstood my post. I was referring to the player not yourself having a higher opinion of his value. However being identified as “f’n delusional “ by you is truly a “Badge of Honor” I will always be extremely proud of….
It's amazing how often people on this site totally misunderstand the wording in a post. Is their reaction on purpose to raise an opposite response? Are they scanning to quickly and honestly misunderstand? Are they just trying to be curmudgeonly and stir up crap?

He was fine. He showed up in one bad play when he was put in an island with a WR1
Yes, I don't remember anyone pointing out where he was a problem in the games he played 100% of the defensive snaps.

He is not 'healthy', he never fully recovered from his ankle injury.
In no universe did he play 'well' at any point this year, except maybe the 4th quarter of a preseason game.
not well but probably better than what we should expect from Saunders or Pettus.

Addison can separate and beat man coverage. Diggs is really the only guy doing that consistently. Imagine Addison in place of Hollins. A threat instead of a guy who rarely gets open. You have to consider Addison in your game plan and coverage calls which will help free up everyone else vs Hollins who defenses treat like an afterthought.
If Diggs is the only one that can beat man coverage, why do other teams play zone at all?

IF that is a true Pop Douglas might be on the move.
I wonder if another team would be attracted by acquiring Chism. I have been a Chism supporter since January but if you have an asset someone else covets and you are using it, why not sell it.

The head scratcher part is not related to the money. Its a concern for not having an obvious plan B mid-season should injury happen and we need the services of Dugger (I am believing though they have a plan, we just dont know it yet). But thanks for reminding me of this...... I would consider this a felony fraud matter/ conspiracy. Mayo/Wolfe conspired with Dugger to commit fraud against the Pats.

PLAN ONE - A VETERAN SIGNED LAST WEEK

PLAN TWO - THE YOUNGSTER SIGNED THIS WEEK
UDFA Saunders who Vrabel like but didn't get

PLAN THREE - TRY TO TRADE FOR A SAFETY NEXT WEEK

The risk vs reward was apparently not worth it. If Dugger was forced into action it was a big risk for the team because A, he can't play, and B, if he suffered a major injury they would be on the hook paying him whatever he was owed next year. When Hawkins was out Dugger played a lot more so the staff got to see what it looked like for two weeks with Dugger out there and it looks like they decided they could get similar production with way less risk.
Thanks 203Pat, this is really helpful as I hadn't consired injury risk.
Aside from the injury risk, am I right that it made no financial difference if the Pats traded him now or cut him at the end of the season, they would take a 2026 cap hit of $9mm which is the $18mm signing basis prorated for the two out of four years remaining. So the Patriots thinking may have included the following -
They didn't want the meaningful financial risk associated with injury
They think they can replace his production
Maybe he quietly asked to be traded and they accomodated
Maybe they aren't picking up all of his remaining 2025 salary
They received something - modest draft compensation

Am I thinking about this correctly?

Vikings aren’t doing much this year. I don’t know enough directly about their cap situation but multiple media sites have them as sellers of either Addison or Hockensen before the deadline. Both their QBs are hurt, they just signed some guy off the street. They could be interesting trade partners is all I’m saying

I feel like I am living in a bizarre world all of a sudden. We have people lamenting we didn't get more for an overpaid 29-year-old safety with a bad ankle and that we didn't get a king’s ransom for a tweener D-lineman who has done nothing in the league. Then a couple of minutes ago, someone floated the idea of sending Josh Dobbs for Jordan Addison. Now apparently, someone will trade us for a guy we could cut today and have on the practice squad tomorrow.

Uhh no. I said Dobbs and a pick. I was thinking a second or a third. But it’s important to be outraged

Perhaps Vrabel likes assets that he thinks will contribute in the future. Oh, perhaps this week Chism will be returning kicks.

By no means am I am expert on the ins and outs of Dugger's deal but it looks like he was guaranteed $32.5 million last year and now the Pats agreed to eat up most of that guaranteed money to get Pittsburg to take him off our hands. Basically they cleared the books and now he gets a 10 game audition and a fresh start with the Steelers before becoming a free agent and we wouldn't be on the hook for his $10 million salary next season if he gets a lengthy injury.

With the way things went with Dugger's limited role and the risk to the team to keep him around this is the best for both sides. Dugger gets the rest of his money and a chance on a team that clearly seems to run a defensive scheme similar to Bill's (Peppers and Bentley also in Pittsburg) and we are off the hook for a guy who wasn't going to be part of the future.
