NFL Trade Deadline Discourse

Budda Baker will be 30 this season. Very good player but prefer someone younger who will be around a while.
He’s never had injury issues. Has 49 tackles, and 2 sacks through 7 games. Doesn’t seem to be slowing down. You get him till he’s 32. Contract isn’t that bad and could be cut if he does slow down. Can still cover as well. I’ll stick to he’s worth a 3rd and some return if we can dump duggers salary with it. Not nearly as interested if they don’t want dugger.

Safety is deep in the 2026 Draft. Build thru the Draft.

At first glance, a perfect addition to Maye game. He is an explosive and fast X receiver that can consistently get open deep. However, he may not be smart enough to adapt to McDanials system. I would love to see him instead of Hollins between the 20s.

His cap hot for 2026 is 19 million with dead cap of 6 million .

There is no freaking way we sign him even if we swap dugger.

Essentially you are getting a safety for 10 + games and taking on 6 million dead cap for 2026 + and 3rd round pick and 5 million in salary hit for this year .

Net cost is 11 million + 3rd round pick for 10 games of safety and you also give a player on top of it.

Yup.

To me the idea of trading for Kevin Zeitler is subtraction by addition:

(i) It uses up draft capital
(ii) For a short term rental, not a long-term addition
(iii) Who is only marginally (at most) better in the short-term than the guy we currently have
(iv) Thus ******ing that player's development.

Of those, (iv) is by far the most important.

Imagine the following conversation:

Doug Marrone: "We need more young talent on the OL."

Mike Vrabel: "Agreed. We got you Will Campbell and Jared Wilson. Planning to add more in 2026. Coach them up."

Doug Marrone: "Awesome. Just one thing ... Wilson's having a few growing pains adjusting to LG. Can we bench him and trade for 35yo Kevin Zeitler?"

Would love to see the response to that one on Forged in Foxboro. I would imagine it would involve using a broom to perform a proctectomy.
I certainly don’t agree with playing players who are playing poorly just because you hope it makes them better in the future.

Your made up conversation isn’t real. Thats not how it works.
If we can trade for a better player, subject to the cost, a young guy can develop from a backup role.
You don’t disrespect the rest of your team by playing a guy who shouldn’t be playing. Best players play. Not the players who might be better in a few years.

That doesn’t help us in 2025.
You can’t build only through the draft. We turned over 50% of the team this year in terms of playing time. You can’t do that just with draft picks.

You dont take dead cap in a trade. The cardinals would be charged the 9 mill.

We sign players for 3 year contract, not based on whether we'll sign him to another contract. I suppose that it could be a 4-year contract.

do you mean giving THEM one of our picks to dump Dugger's salary?

I mean his age concern is still valid, finding someone who could be a longer term fit is more appealing and signing any player after the age of 30 to any multi year contract has a higher risk.

Agreed.

That said you get 2 years of all-pro level safety with another kid developing behind he and Woodson from the draft, that's the sweet spot.

Fair but we have lots of cap space and we have to use it somewhere. Looking ahead at the free agent class next year it seems like there will be a few decent safeties available while many other positions are quite weak. Bryan Cook and Ronnie Hickman standout to me. No matter how deep the position may be in the draft I think it'd be wise to fill whatever holes we can in free agency and keep our options open on draft day, similar to what we did last off season.

Brian Thomas is currently having one of the worst seasons ever for a "#! WR". I'm good with bringing in talented loser checked-out guy.

I think he had 5 or 6 drops alone last week?
Moss was also checked out with Oakland. We got him for just a 4th and he was an absolute steal.

This could be another buy low, with big upside type of trade. You know BT Jr has the talent, he already busted out with 1200 yards and 10 TDs his rookie season.

If the Jaguars are not asking for the moon because they want to move him on, this could be a unique opportunity to get a top talent at WR.

Or waste assets on a player the rest of the NFL has figured out or is mentally not strong enough or has the deduction to play great ball.

I struggle to find who he can replace on the roster and guaranteed to be that much better.

I think Boutte is going to keep performing he needs paid.
Diggs is the heart and soul, Douglas is making plays as is Hollins who is a whipping boy but a team favorite in the lockeroom.

I wouldn’t trade for a WR outside of injury or I hate to say it dealing Williams.

No value in trading for a wr.

With the way Maye is playing he can make superstars out of jag receivers .

So don't waste any more assets on wr. Need it for other areas especially defense . Pay Boutte and we are good. Every year draft a wide receiver on top 3 picks so that at least 2wide receivers are on aroomie contracts , 1 would be in a prove it deal , 1 would be a wr 1a or 1b and other would be mack hollins type of wr.

This way we can balance out when we start to pay maye the big contract. What the Bengals did with burrow and chase an higgins is precisely what you don't want to do.

Mahomes is still thriving with 36 year old kelce who is on a 15 million contract .

Sign tight ends wide receivers . That's the sweet spot.

The guy who I really want is obviously not for sale...Chris Olave. Steelers are regretting getting rid of man that's what you'all get.

Moss was nowhere near this bad. Brian Thomas has been absolutely awful.
