He made the mistake in believing that because Bill Belichick liked having a shameless sycophant around him that it validated his own expertise and he could play big shot with everyone who dared to question him. Matt Patricia had a similar problem in Detroit. He seems to have found a spot in college. Josh McDaniels had these exact same problems as a HC in Denver and Vegas and people quickly got sick of it, he's probably hit his Peter Principle as an OC.
