Content Post Idle Thoughts: the 4-2 edition.

This has an opening post with good commentary and information, which we definitely recommend reading.

I have never seen a referee crew that bad. Bad calls on both sides, missed calls on both sides, and inconsistent with what they flagged. They also seemed confused multiple times on the two point conversion and the Boutte TD catch that the two refs seemed to stare at each other. This one isn't specific to this crew but these illegal shift flags are so stupid. 95% of those don't seen to affect the play so stop throwing a god damn flag on it.

My main concern with this team is Chiasson and Landry against the run. I dont think we can keep going with 2 light guys on the edge who get washed out frequently and who seem lost diagnosing the run.
That was a concern of mine coming out of camp but I think they've answered the question our run D has been great despite this concern.

Name me 1 other team that has anything close to:

1. A franchise (likely top-5) QB on a rookie contract
2. A franchise LT on a rookie contract
3. A franchise CB on a rookie contract
3A. A second top CB who started for a Super Bowl champion.
4. 2 cornerstone DTs
5. An average rest of the roster
6. A really solid coaching staff
7. A favorable cap situation

As hellish as the past 6 years have been, no team is in a better position looking forward.
Fixed your one omission.

Great insights well expressed, as always. Thanks Ken!

I’m going to argue that there’s not really cause for as much concern as you expressed. To my eyes the game wasn’t quite as close as the final score says it was. It wasn’t thorough domination but it felt like the Pats were able to make more plays and to keep the Saints from making plays. So I don’t share some of your criticisms and concerns about the offensive playcalling and defensive line play. They didn’t need to go deep into the playbook and show their hand with plays they might need against a stronger opponent, and they didn’t need to dial up pressure with stunts etc. I had to watch the replay so I already knew the final score and was surprised to see how early in the third quarter both offenses stopped being productive. It really felt to me like both teams had taken each other’s measure and already knew the score by then.
This is what I was trying to say. I think by the end of the game both the Pats and the Saints knew this, and that the D could as well.

We have a good coach in Mike Vrabel and I think we are starting to see that he way he coached yesterday and handled all the bad calls . The Patriots overcame the Saints and the ref's yesterday. I don't often complain about the officials be it was bad. That said the Patriot made big plays on 3rd down and were able to get the win.

I loved the post-game clip that had Vrabel telling the team that even though they have a LOT to improve on, they need to celebrate the win because they are so damned hard to come by in the NFL, because it's true. You do not get anything extra for style points or the quality of the win. No one remembers whether a win was by a point or who it was against in January when they are figuring out the seeding for the playoffs. And the win against Carolina counts the same as the one against Buffalo. All they do is add up wins and give you a ticket in.

But it is our job to break down this game and figure out what to extol and what damn. It was a win, not a satisfying win (at least for me) but a win, nonetheless. And after tomorrow needs to be put aside for the next road game. But for now, let's look at this game

1. Josh McDaniel - Josh has to be give a TON of credit for getting the offense to this point and even more credit for the continuing development of Maye into what he has become. It truly is amazing. HOWEVER, like everything on this team there is room for improvement and that goes for Josh too,

For me it comes in the run game. Vs Carolina I thought we were trending in the right direction with a number of misdirection runs which were successful. We saw a few in Buffalo too. Today I saw NONE. If I were a LB running against this run game, it would be a breeze. EVERY damn run was straight into the line with no misdirection or pulls or anything. Just straight off tackle or up the middle, with the only an occasional play action pass to break the monotony. When we start to play better teams, we will need to have a better more threatening run game than we have now. And until our OL improves to the point where THEY are doing a better job, it is up to Josh to develop a more creative run game to give our player an edge. Just my 2 cents.

2. Drake Maye - I find it stunning that with every game he plays he seems to find ways to improve on his weaknesses. I've complained from the first game about him giving up when pressured quickly up the middle and taking a sack when it looks like he had time to escape. Well today there were at least 2 times that happened where he DID escape and make a play and he had only one sack and that was for just ]a 2 yd loss.

He got robbed of his first 300 yd game, but that's just a matter of time. His down field accuracy just keeps getting better just as his receivers are getting more separation. 260 yds and only a about 60 total to his usual targets of Diggs, Henry, and RB's. Nothing but good things to see at the QB position, with the understanding that it can get so much better moving forward.

3. the OL - is a sold to good pass blocking group and a sup par work in progress in the run game. Unfortunately, the run game requires more "continuity" to be effective than pass blocking. So, I supposed that it should get better as they become more familiar with each other, and Josh hopefully becomes more creative. But clearly this is a case of 2 steps forward, one step back in the area of the run game.

4. Receivers - Watching Boutte today, I thought to myself was he is what we drafted Polk to be. A possession receiver who will win most of the 50-50 balls thrown his way. He is playing great and has EARNED himself prominent role as a WR.

Pop made a big appearance today and would have been noteworthy if they had given him his well earned 2nd TD on such a brutal call. I believe he will continue to find a role in Josh's offense, just some weeks more than others. Diggs, Boutte, Henry and RB throws are 1,2,3,4 on the priority list it seems so Pop will have some weeks when he 'Pops" and some weeks when he doesn't.

Defense - DL - Have to say I was a bit disappointed in Williams and Barmore today. I thought they'd end up being more disruptive than they ended up being. They did turn up the heat in the run game in the second half essentially shutting it down, but I thought they'd be in Rattler's face all game, and they weren't. Again, it was better in the 2nd half but not by a lot like with the run game.

I'm not calling for blitz's and 5 and six man rushes, but more stunts and crosses between the edge and interior guys to create some movement. Instead, we seemed to get too many of what I would call controlled bull rushes. We got a couple of sacks, but I bet the hurries, hits and pressures were down this week. I would like to see some overload blitz looks like Rex Ryan used to run so effectively. Essentially that is when you overload one side to create a numbers advantage and leave guys on the other side with literally no one to block. The end result is on one side you want to create a guy with a free run at the QB, while not having to weaken your pass coverage.

6. The LBs are really growing on me. We aren't seeing any of the misses we saw earlier this season as they are stacking live tackling reps over 6 games. Spillane had double digits again (11) and Ellis had 8 as his play improves weekly.

7. I commented on the gdp that Duggar was going to take a LOT of **** for that first big play, and he shouldn't. It was a bad scheme design by the coaches. You should never leave a box Safety alone on an island with their best receiver and no help. You don't put your players in positions where they are bound to fail. You wouldn't put Marcus to defend the A gap against the run; you don't put Duggar to cover Olave deep. That is a coach's error where the player ends up taking the blame.

The other thing that bugged me on defense was there was a point in time where it looked like Olave was just GASHING the Pats, and I had to wonder, if you are lucky enough to have a true shut down CB, why aren't you using him to shut down that main WR threat that day. Just asking

8. ST's - Chism did a good job returning KO's today. I think he found a role that will get him on the game day roster going forward. All but 2 of his returns got outside the 30 and the 2 that didn't make it to 28 which is like a draw, with those past the 30 a win for the receiving team. Our coverage team only had 2 returns past the 30 and were strong again (except for one IIRC). Overall a solid effort by ST's as it remains a consistent plus week to week.

9. Things are going well. 3 wins in a row and a very likely 4th in a week. But watching Davis and Landry laid out on the field made it clear to me how precarious our situation is. We are still a rebuilding team who is just an injury or two away from disaster.

Fortunately, both Davis and Landry returned to action, though I doubt either will practice next Wednesday. Still, it made me realize that we have a way to go to be a true contender. It takes time a few good drafts to develop quality depth to survive the kind of injuries we are seeing teams like the 49ers, TB, etc are going through.

I think we need to add more athleticism at S and CB and one of Ponder, Jones, or Swinson need to develop into a serviceable edge rusher. When exactly is the trade deadline?
.
OK; that's it for now. I don't want to fall asleep at the keyboard. I'm going to watch the 2nd half again to look more closely at the running attack and defense. Hopefully KCSEVEN will bless us with some of his all 22 film insights. look forward to your feedback and good night.
I was asking that same question about Olave. Where was Gonzo? Meanwhile Marcus Jones is developing into a great player, quickly becoming one of my favorites\.

They played almost exclusively zone.

The one time they threw to Olave on Gonzalez' side was a 4-yard comeback route.
Brandin Cooks had 1 catch.

I'm afraid I didn't share your confidence. NO played a tough game. Barring the fumble Ellis created, and a couple great plays by Maye and Boutte, NO was still in the game.

Great analysis as always

I don't think Chism's 5 returns for 129 yards are getting enough attention given that we were concerned about not having Gibson on hand.

Heck at nearly 26 yards per return that's better than any of the RBs did with returns against Buffalo - so Chism also solves that problem, plus he's likely on the game day roster as yet ANOTHER receiving threat.

I think Josh likes to mix it up and throw the unexpected at DCs - and at times that doesn't work as we see

But at times like sending Pop Douglas deep - well, that worked and pays dividends, opening up the middle all the more.

This should be a pass first to set up the run IMO but it seems clear Josh wants to establish the run before going into the playoffs. I think we do need a short down "Blount" type RB that's not really on the team at this point.

So who knows, maybe Vrabel takes one out of the memoirs and finds a Linebacker who can carry the ball in those short yardage situations!

Aside from that we have seen a nice assortment of receivers - and I almost expect to see a featured receiver from week to week as Josh seems to love making DC's review of his play calling tendencies from game to game a complete waste of time.

It seems to be working but as you point out, injuries have a way of resetting the picture as well.

That was a concern of mine coming out of camp but I think they've answered the question our run D has been great despite this concern.
Has it? we're not playing great teams and it seems to me that the offense is operating at such a high level that teams give up the run because they are behind. But the Saints offense was driving at will. So did the Panthers before falling behind.

The run defense numbers look great, but when teams are mixing it up and the game is even, we don't force punts. The Saints punter was a non-player yesterday. I fear that they will suffer against decent teams.

That being said, Buffalo is the best team they played and they won.

I've always hated that statement, it's been used as slander against other defenses in our past. Other than 85 Bears and 2000 Ravens it's safe to say every defense plays worse against better teams.

I'm not sure why that's a suspect statement. We went 10-7 with Mac and beat the Bills in Buffalo with one of the worst Patriots defenses of the last 25 years. They were later exposed.

We're very early in the Vrabel era and this defense is very talented and should get better.

I'm only noting a weakness on the edges. Otherwise, this defense should continue to develop.

Some comments on your comments.

1) OCs don’t execute. A poorly executed play isn’t an OCs fault, unless you call plays your team can’t execute. When you are getting tackled at handoff I don’t know that slower developing misdirection plays will work. I want to go back and watch the tape but during the game I felt it wasn’t playing calling but blocking. I didn’t notice an abandonment of misdirection and there were a lot of play action plays.

2) Maye has been incredible. How incredible? He has a higher completion % AND yards per attempt than Tom Brady ever had in a season. I think we need to stop using gonna with Maye and use is.

3) I’m seeing discipline in pass blocking and clutching and grabbing in the run game. 350 lb RGs should use their shoulders not their fingers

4) As has been the case for the last 25 years most of our WRs are tough to define. We play a different game each week depending upon how we are defended. What we are seeing more and more of is Maye extending plays and hitting the deeper and intermediate areas. Ultimately the 3 step dunk and dunk plays are an extension/replacement for the running game but I almost feel we are wasting Maye every time we don’t run a pass play that attacks the entire field.

5) I think the game plan on D was different than any other game we’ve played. Rattler is quick to take the short throw. His avg per completion was like 8.2 on the season and minus 1 big catch and run it was under 8 which is historically very low. I think we played into that. We drop off into zone and let him take his comfort level but when he needed to do more he couldn’t. We allowed 3 second half points. We were depleted on the front 4. Williams was ill he only played 33 snaps and wasn’t himself. White was out. Jennings was out. Chaisson returning from injury and Landry got banged up. I think we wanted to limit blitzed because rattler is more dangerous running than throwing.

6) LBs have improved. I am not a fan of Elliss. He doesn’t read and diagnose well and gets lost in coverage. Tackles are a spurious stat. If you are run at all the time because you are a liability you get a lot of tackles after good gains. If you allow a lot of completions then tackle the guy, that’s also a negative disguised as a positive in tackle totals.

7) Duggar played every snap and that’s the only time he stood out as a bad play. I think we decided to force them to beat us throwing in front of the zone. Other than the first play Olave only had 5 catches in 9 targets for 45 yards

8) STs were ok. Nothing bad nothing great.

9) We are really no different than anyone else in depth. Every team “rebuilding” or “established” has depth issues and if the lose top line starters it’s just as much of a disaster. I say this to everyone who brings up this topic. Look around the league and find me the teams that have “good depth”. You will find either guys not good enough to start or guys who gave proven nothing. I actually think we have, compare to other teams, good depth in many areas. I also think that the multiple nature of our schemes and the game planning approach make us better equipped to deal with guys being out.

Nice post Ken. What a difference this is from a year ago

We're very early in the Vrabel era and this defense is very talented and should get better.

I'm only noting a weakness on the edges. Otherwise, this defense should continue to develop.
Because running into someone better than you at something is going to happen. There's a lot of talent around the league. That doesn't automatically mean weakness. To me a real weakness will be exposed by most everyone not just the best.

Sorry just a pet peeve of mine.

Say what?
The 2021 defense was #2 in points allowed and #4 in yards allowed.
It allowed 13 or fewer points in half its games.
It was the 10th best points allowed patriots defense of the last 25 years on points, and one of only 6 to be ranked 1 or 2.
It was the tied for 2nd best belichick D in yards allowed ranking.
You couldn’t be more wrong.

I was asking that same question about Olave. Where was Gonzo? Meanwhile Marcus Jones is developing into a great player, quickly becoming one of my favorites\.

Just guessing, but Gonzalez was limited with his hamstring all week. Perhaps that affected the coverage schemes?

I've been mentioning this in all 6 games. It's not week to week.

We've been getting gashed early. And then teams start abandoning the run.

Except for Geno Smith who ate us alive with play action.

Maybe we should play Tonga a little earlier and Williams on the edge and bring the pass rushers on as the game progresses.

We are #4 against the run and #3 in yards per rush. We have allowed 1 20 + yard run (22) No one is “gashing us”

I'm just grasping at straws looking to find ways to improve the run game. When I say misdirection I think back to the Carolina game and the Henderson's TD run when he walked in untouched. That was a great play design that created space at the LOS. Looks like we are running into tight quarters all the time.

Then again remember when Bill gave a great lecture at a presser on the great benefits of a 2-3 yd run on first down vs the risk of a loss on a riskier play. I think it was back in the Antoine Smith days when he averaged 3ypc and Bill loved him because he always produced positive yardage and always got the 3rd and 4th and shorts.

2) Maye has been incredible. How incredible? He has a higher completion % AND yards per attempt than Tom Brady ever had in a season. I think we need to stop using gonna with Maye and use is.

Good point. But there will be set back. No progression is linear, though his has been pretty close. Every time I point out a flaw he has gone and fixed it

3) I’m seeing discipline in pass blocking and clutching and grabbing in the run game. 350 lb RGs should use their shoulders not their fingers
Agreed Hopefully it will improve. It doesn't need to be great, but it does need to be better than it is right now.

Interesting point of view We did get a sack out of the blitz and a few hurries.

7) Duggar played every snap and that’s the only time he stood out as a bad play. I think we decided to force them to beat us throwing in front of the zone. Other than the first play Olave only had 5 catches in 9 targets for 45 yards -
Olave was 6 for 98, but I see what you meant now. 5 for 45 doesn't seem like much, but it seemed worse than that.

I'd like to think you are right on this point. I'd like to think with another decent draft and about 3 impact FAs we can add about 8 younger faster, and more athletic bodies to the roster and they will add the extra layer of depth that adds 2 or 3 wins to your totals.

And yes it is a HUGE difference to the general feeling about this team compared to last year.
