I think you are confused about what I am saying.
I’m not saying they are never open I am saying they are not open ENOUGH.
Unless you believe that we are putting those 3 guys out there to make up 2/3 to 3/4 of our WR routes, yet run an offense that makes WRs the 4th and 5th progressions, they would be getting more targets if they were open.
It’s not any different for the Patriots than any other team. We would love to throw the ball to the WRs. They are most often the top progressions. If they weren’t and we getting open all day they would become the top progressions.
This idea that we are the only team in the history of the league that have WRs getting open with ease but refuse to throw them the ball is bizarre.
Maye doesn’t drop back look the field over and choose who he wants to throw to. Thats just not his an NFL passing game works. He doesn’t pick Diggs over Douglas. He runs his progressions and throws to the first one that is open.
Boutte catching 1 pad surely doesn’t mean he was only “open” once but it means he didn’t get open enough. And when he is the primary target, and the play is designed and coordinated for him to get open, he should.
If you think every play we ran was perfect and we could have thrown to any receiver and each of them could have caught 8-10 passes, you should look deeper.
