Just watched the full game tape for Campbell and Simmons. Overall, I think they both played well., Campbell was better in his game overall. In terms of who they went against, neither faced an elite rusher. Campbell faced Chubb a few times, Simmons was against Joshua Uche Quite a bit.
Campbell vs Simmons Run Blocking: Campbell was dominating as a run blocker. Simmons was good. There was one play they aligned Jalen Carter against him and Simmons was embarrassed, like he was not there. It is Carter though. Otherwise, was good overall. Campbell was great, got to second level and moves better than Simmons, moved his guy back, worked double teams incredibly well. Simmons had few double teams, but was able to move his guy enough on most plays. Pretty good edge to Campbell for this game, he was just dominating.
Campbell vs Simmons Pass Blocking: Simmons looks the part with his arm length and movement. Campbell, as we know not the same size arms. BUT Campbell is 6 foot 6 and 320, Simmons 6 foot 5 and 311. For big guys they both have good feet and movement. Campbell is a bit lighter on feet. Simmons has mastered the KC Chiefs line up in the backfield to pass block technique, he gets as far back as you can, maybe too far on some plays but not called. Campbell handled stunts well after the first 2 where the left side let 2 stunts work pretty well against them but Maye got the ball out so quick did not matter. Other than that Wilson and Campbell handled stunts and Campbell stonewalled Chubb or whomever went against him. Simmons stonewalled everybody for most of the game. Very few stunts. They had success late on stunts, but I think generally it was the entire line not communicating directly rather than Simmons. He faced Uche a ton and Jalyx Hurt (?) and was dominant pass pro vs them. Late in the game they put Nolan Smith against Simmons and Smith had a pretty high success rate. Up until that point Simmons was equal or better than Campbell but he struggled on several pass pro's vs Smith. Thus edge to Campbell in this game.
Long term: Campbell should be the better run blocker, Simmons MIGHT become the better pass blocker. Simmons currently is not better today but he has much less experience than Campbell so more chance to improve and he has the longer arms that give him a physical edge. I would guess they both will struggle with certain rushers, Simmons with the Smaller, quicker, good bend Smith types and Campbell with the Jon Greenard larger size/arm pass rush types.
Will Campbell might be an all pro run blocker in year 1 and I think he'll always be better than Simmons on that. Simmons has a 1 in 20 shot of reoccurrence of the patellar tendon tear which can't be ignored.
PFF Simmons YTD: 60.2 OVR 75.3 Pass Block and 51.4 Run Block
PFF Campbell YTD: 65.1 OVR 77.7 Pass Block 65.7 Run Block
Mind you PFF gave Will a poor 50.7 Run Block vs Miami (We will see if that gets adjusted) after a 78.2 in week 1. On film he absolutely dominated the Dolphins on run blocks. PFF just has some weeks where it is way off, but it's useful in a larger sample size.
