Mac Jones went to a Pro Bowl. If Drake continues to be incapable of reading defenses or going through his progressions or making accurate throws reliably, then they are certainly in the same universe, the same planet. Drake has got to prove it on the field. Not a great start, but with all the changes we should cut him some slack.

Jones went to the pro bowl because several AFC QBs opted out.
Drake Maye went to the pro bowl last year as an injury replacement, perhaps you forgot!

I'm tending to believe Vrabel and Josh are going to lossen up on drakes running ability.. it seemed like LV game planned for it.. we drafted drake for his football IQ, his arm, athletic ability and ability to make off schedule throws. I believe we see more of that the rest of the way IMO

100%. He is a great runner, they need to use the tools in his toolbox.

This offense works best the way it was called on the first half with Maye pushing the ball often into that 15-20 yard area, but YOU HAVE TO RUN THE BALL to get those looks and then you even open the deep ball, which might be Mayes #1 strength.

An entire half, with 32 offensive plays and ZERO handoffs to your RB1 or RB2 isn’t a contribution to the problem it IS THE PROBLEM.
You might as well tell them go ahead and defend what we want to do and what we do best, because we aren’t going to try to do anything else.

Yeah - not sure what that play calling was all about. I also think that if there's an issue with Josh, it may also be in his insistence that Maye play his system. I'd say that Josh would do better to adapt his scheme to Maye's strong suits and abilities, at least for the start of his career.

Among the positives though, was Maye's ability to spread the ball and the receivers ability to catch them (when not over or under thrown)

While the running game did not impress, at least Henderson has shown he's a pass catching threat, which will help everyone.

Maye is smart enough to understand and to play Josh's system. Surely, that is the consensus opinion of those not posting on patriot message boards. He is also strong enough. He also has enough stamina. Also, he wants to win.

However, it is also clear that he needs coaching, not unreasonable for a plyer with his limited college experience and inadequate 2024 coaching. He wasn't ready to start at the beginning of 2024 (as so many here wanted). He still has a long way to go.

I'm sure he ultimately will be - he's a smart and savvy guy.

If it's the same "timing" scheme that he and Brady used so well, that does seem to be something that has been a challenge for other QBs and it would not be a surprise to see such a young QB struggle, especially in the first game of the season.

That's less a matter of spreading the ball but more of throwing to a vacant spot where the WR is expected to be

If Maye is having any issues, especially with such a new receiving corps, I'd hope McDaniels would adjust and simplify .

I disagree. You hire a coordinator for his philosophy. Every “system” has many facets within it. Every system is adapted to the player.
There is no reason to change the system for Maye, you simply call that plays that take advantage of his strengths. Every play there is is in our playbook.

Obviously that's not fair to Drake, given the lack of talent and coaching dysfunction in 2024. But, it's ridiculous to say that early 2023 Mac and early 2025 Drake aren't in the same universe. When Drake leads his team into the playoffs, we can circle back and take stock. Drake has all the physical tools and far more potential than Mac. But the big question mark is whether he can put the mental side together and make accurate throws. Sunday wasn't a good look for him, but we're on to Miami.

Mac had a more productive rookie year, that can't be argued.
Maye is a far superior athlete with physical skills Mac is worlds away from.
That said, all Maye's potential is just that, potential.
Plenty of potentially great NFL players have never come close to fulfilling it.
I certainly think Maye will figure out, but that's a very reasonable question mark today.

It’s not nearly as read heavy as it used to be. That was an advancement made for Brady that’s been dialed back a lot

I think Boutte is better than pop honestly. I think Boutte has tons of talent was and awesome at LSU before hurting ankle pretty badly. Now he is back on track and playing some good ball! Hope both of them have big days in Fishlandia

To me it looked like a coaching point.

It seemed like everytime he left the pocket he was still searching for receivers which obviously we don't want him constantly giving up on plays. But at the same time he would leave the pocket and while he was busy still finding a receiver his running lanes were rapidly closing before he actually decided to scramble.

I think that just takes some in game learning to get a better feel for when to keep the play alive vs tucking and running. But it's got to be more of a decisive decision or he'll get caught and look slow like last week.

Not anything new for him plenty of QBs have to figure out how to balance this. I think we're more used to seeing it the other way where a guy runs to often and too quickly and I think thats what Josh is trying to teach but ultimately Drake's the one on the field and he's got to figure it out. Last Sunday doesn't didn't seem right from that department.

As typically on the board yeliou have the fair weather Drake fans.. when the kid makes elite throws and breaks down the pocket to get outside or find a guy down feild then he's a stud.. when he misses throws or turns it over then he seemingly can't read defenses.. .. to your points.. Drake will balance it out.. to me it seemed as if LV was game planning for his abilities to break the pocket. Based on what Vrabel said this week I think we see some adjustments and the reigns off Drake Vrabel said we want to focus on the things he does well.
