Should the Patriots Trade for Washington WR Terry McClaurin? (8/16 update: off PUP)[8/25: signs 3yr extension]

remember you not only need to give Washington a hefty price, you need to give Terry something in the range of a 3 year $100MM contract. This isn't something to consider unless the price is something like Polk and a 4th.

We ***** and moan about never developing any WR's, well now we seem to have a decent young crop of guys like Williams, Boutte, Baker, Polk and Chisom. Why don't we take the ****ing time and DEVELOP one or two of them for a change

Washington would be nuts to trade him and do that to their QB.

Diggs and our 2026 fourth for McLaurin, would you do it? Would you send our third? Or second? Or throw in Polk?
I, um...Diggs? Why?

Polk and a 4th would get it done if Washington's serious. Nobody's giving up a 2nd round pick.

Trading Diggs for McLaurin offloads $63.5million of Diggs’ contract to offset the new contract given to McLaurin. Swaps one vet for another so it doesn’t affect development pipeline.

See above comment. Plus Diggs and McLaurin play similar roles so will be competing for touches, and it’s already been suggested Diggs would be unhappy to see McLaurin come here as competition for him. So offloading him avoids locker room animosity and still upgrades our WRs.

Diggs has been nothing but a class act leader since he got here, there is zero chance Vrabel will trade Diggs.

If Terry is coming here something like Mapu, Strange, Polk and a third are going to the Was.

I’m just going to say if we don’t make this trade Buff might.
So we are really playing defense on offense.

I could also see the Chargers, Titans, Browns, Raiders. Packers in the mix.

Nope. Don't want it. Not for a second rounder.

Imo trades where you get an older high priced vet and have to pay him a big contract as well as give up a top 64 pick rarely work out in your favor. Unless they are a piece which puts you over the top.
If he was any of younger (so longer contract) cheaper or could be had for a 3rd or less, absolutely. But he's none of those. So it's bad value on a rebuilding team like ours.

If anything they should trade for a back up tackle if they can't sign one.

If they were to trade for him though they need to go all in the next 3 years big time. They should look to deal their first as well. Get Hendrickson from Cincy too and push those cap hits forward into later years.

Or, you know...keep him, trade Polk the bust, and have 2 good WRs?

The money is still irrelevant until Maye's extension kicks in.

Agree with this. No shot they're getting a 2nd rounder with the extension being part of the deal. I'd do a 4th, and even that seems a little on the high side.

Washington's not getting a 2nd from anyone.

Correct.

He's a leader, stays out of trouble, and produces because he's really good at all facets of an NFL WR but also because he is tough and plays every game. Every game. What high level skill player does that in today's game? I'd give them a 4th and maybe a late 2027 pick and/or pick 2 of Bourne, Polk, Baker, Boutte (keeping Hollins, Diggs, Williams, Pop).

People are too fixated on age. Production is production.

It’s a real consideration at the positions/players that rely on speed. The drop off in play for most WR’s when they get to 30-31 is precipitous. Some WR’s are able to adapt to it and keep producing, but overall the numbers say not to give out big contracts to WR’s at that point in their careers. However, if the contract is structured right, as Diggs is, it lessens the risk considerably.

Exactly. McLaurin will be 30 in Sept. It's not old but not young either. A JaMarr Chase deal doesn't make sense.

A 2 year deal is reasonable for his production and age. We have no evidence of him slowing down.

Historically a 2nd rd pick having an NFL career as a starter is between 20-30%. Draft picks are like high risk stocks. They are not guarantees but have value.

The team is sitting on $60m in cap space. Money is not a problem.

Our top WR is coming off an ACL injury and will be 32 in Nov. If he goes down we become seriously limited offensively.

It's a no-brainer.

Who would Brady and McDaniels prefer given the choice over McClaurin or them Williams, Boutte, Baker, Polk and Chisom?? I think they're are going with the ready made player.

1. 30 is NFL old if you've been beat up, have injury history (him not have)
2. Most productive year at 29 - peaking? (Who the eff knows)
3. Don't like it but I understand
4. $ - plenty (Yeah, I could go option dangle 3rd year)
5. Definitely.
6. Perfect kind of signing for Wolf

P.S Having him, Henry and Pop, 3rd down and 5 or more gets a whole lot easier.
