This is an answer that many won’t like. Getting rid of Jaylen Brown is the best way to do this. I’m not a big Brown hater anymore. I do appreciate what he brings to the table overall. There are a lot of things he can do with his athleticism and shot creating that no one else can (except maybe Tatum.)
But, the Celtics are 81-34 since Brown’s rookie year in games he’s missed. They’re 27-4 over the last two years. The analytics about Brown, suggesting he’s basically an average player, probably underestimate him. But he’s also not an all-nba caliber player. He may be an all-nba guy based on points per game but not on the totality of his game. There are many reasons for this. Needless to say, he’s a good player, sometimes great, and now he is etched into Celtics history, but he isn’t an elite player, and he costs too much, especially with the league’s crushing salary cap rules.
The best way to be competitive is trade him, clear a lot of cap space this year, and continue to gain more space as guys like Horford and Porzingis (and maybe Holiday) come off the books. Begin reloading with Pritchard, White, and whatever draft picks / young players they can get for Brown, and hope Tatum is somewhere around 90% in 2026/27.
