Celtics 2024-2025 Discussion

Not that they will do this, but if they brought everyone back next year and the team was healthy they would definitely make the playoffs
I agree but they are not healthly and if they were new owner wants to reduce payroll. So someone or two must go.

The second apron rules restrict trades that play games with cash:
Teams cannot send cash out in trades and cannot acquire a player in a sign-and-trade if that keeps them above the second apron.
Thanks for that info. I did not know, oh well that changes my plan. Thankd

Even while Tatum recovers we still have some core players. I'm thinking trying to restructure Jrue, and trading KP would help the apron situation...

If we could get a younger big man who can score down low and offensive rebound that would be a godsend. We don't need anymore 7ft 3 point shooters.
I agree with some of your thoughts. I think Jrue is done, too manu nagginh injurires and he is aging better to get rid of him now than be stuck with his contract later.

I agree with most of these ideas. If there’s a big market for Brown, it makes a lot of sense to trade him. Agree on keeping Pritchard and White, unless there are incredible offers.

Don’t really agree on trading Hauser and Kornet. Still good to keep continuity if you can, unlikely to get much return on either of them, and their contract value is fine if they can get out of the second apron by trading some of the big contract guys.
We agree on most. Kornet is a FA so he will probably leave for more money. So that leaves our discussion around Hauser. Hauser makes $10/yr, he is very streaky, inconsistent at that price we need consistent so unless he can do that, it would be better to get rid of him and get a young new player that can grow into the consistent you want. We are going to miss the playoffs with my suggestions so what is the difference about how bad you miss? A miss is a miss.

Did you watch these playoffs? Many of Brown's turnovers were the result of ****ty refereeing. He was constantly hacked down low and rarely got the call. I mean constantly hacked. It wasn't just every now & then.

Look, I get that the stats show simply "Turnovers", but you have to be able to look beyond that in cases like this. The Magic & the Knicks both hacked and hacked and hacked because they knew that was the only way to stop Brown down low. The NBA seems to want this ****, so have fun watching the rest of these playoffs, because I'm not. They absolutely ruined NBA basketball for me with how the refs are calling these games.
Mr. JAYLEN BROWN is Mr. TURNOVER for the Celtics, always has been Mr
Turnover. So while there were a few turnover due to the refs most were a result of Jaylen Brown's play.

To suggest that I don't watch the playoffs is wrong of you and bad. I don't miss a game inless I am sick, i am 89 years young and spend 95% of my time in bed watching sports, thank you.

Yes. I mentioned back around the trade deadline that we should have been in on some guys.. day'ron sharpe.. a young athletic bigman who can offensive rebound and score down low as well as defend is a name. Also Jacob peortlhl the 7ft big man who also was made available by Toronto. We need to recommit to post scoring.. nothing wrong with taking 3s but falling in love with them is a dangerous way to try to win championships in the NBA. Look at OKC whom I believe is winning the championship this season 66 games and they take the 3 but aren't in love with them.

Jrue and or porzingas for sure I'm thinking will be moved. We have some young guys on the team like Davidson who's been developing well. Quata also has potential but will need to continue to work on his post game and could thrive under more playtime next season.

I like big luke.. we need to try to retain him but I also wouldn't blame him for leaving for a bigger contract.

Given his age (turning 30 in July) and the year he just had, this is probably his one shot at a good contract, one that the Celtics are unlikely to offer given their salary cap situation. I would be very surprised if he stayed with the Cs.

Very true given thier current cap situation. Makes sense. Like plays hard and with passion effort and energy. We likely need to replace him. Guy i like is sharpe who plays for the nets.

We agree, change is coming, just how much. 2025-2026 season will be a waste because of Tatum's injury. 2026-2027 will be a question mark depending on how Tatum heals. Jaylen Brown has demonstrated he can not step up for Tatum. Immediately after the season was over did he and some Celtic members spoke about Brown's injury. You did not hear Massazzula or Stevens speak about Jaylen's injury effecting the outcome of thr game he screwed up and the Knicks won it all.

I think JB tries to do to much at times. He's a great all around player, but whenever he's in a position to try to be the primary scorer he commits TOs. The guys a top 25 player in the league for sure. He and JT have been in the postseason since they have been rookies. That is a lot of ball on thier bodies. The Cs gave the Knicks the series. Being up by double digits in the first 2 homes games. That right there is what's really eating at stevens. Mazzulla is a good coach no doubt but he's going to have to tweak his coaching mentality and use more on the court in-game adjustments and less analytical. He can learn by now having to sit and watch other coaches since he's teams out.

89! Nice. @Ian who’s the oldest member on here?
I'd have to dig and run it by active members (people who have logged on in the last six months). Although I sort of don't want to, given that there will be names who will pop up that will be tough to see who are no longer with us. But at 89, without even looking, I'd be surprised if anyone could unseat @Brewskies - and I'm incredibly grateful he's still with us.

Thank you, Ian. I am looking forward to a few more years as well, to be on this forum.

I don’t think that Hauser is really a streaky, inconsistent shooter. He’s a 3 point specialist who takes about 5-7 a game. Just based on probability, there are plenty of games where he goes 0-5 or 1-7. That’s just normal and happens with every shooter with a similar volume. We follow the Celtics and watch the day-by-day results, so our perception is different. The reality is every low-mid volume 3 point shooter has the same type of patterns. No one is going 2/5 or 3/7 every game and almost every NBA player has a long shooting slump and long shooting peak streak during the season.

You know what we can use as an objective measure of Hauser’s production? His 3 point percentage, which is second in the NBA among all players since he entered the league. If we got another player with a similar role, he’ll have the same perceived hot-cold inconsistency as Hauser, but with longer slumps and shorter hot streaks.

But hey, this isn’t a major disagreement. Hauser is making $10M. Even if I think he’s worth his contract, I’m not arguing he’s an incredible player worth $25M. I just think he’s worth the money and the continuity, so no need to try to trade for what’s likely just some mid player or low draft pick. And similarly, I doubt you think getting rid of / replacing him is a really high priority.

Just curious. What is the most realistic way to keep the team competitive and stay under the rules?

Thanks!
This is an answer that many won’t like. Getting rid of Jaylen Brown is the best way to do this. I’m not a big Brown hater anymore. I do appreciate what he brings to the table overall. There are a lot of things he can do with his athleticism and shot creating that no one else can (except maybe Tatum.)

But, the Celtics are 81-34 since Brown’s rookie year in games he’s missed. They’re 27-4 over the last two years. The analytics about Brown, suggesting he’s basically an average player, probably underestimate him. But he’s also not an all-nba caliber player. He may be an all-nba guy based on points per game but not on the totality of his game. There are many reasons for this. Needless to say, he’s a good player, sometimes great, and now he is etched into Celtics history, but he isn’t an elite player, and he costs too much, especially with the league’s crushing salary cap rules.

The best way to be competitive is trade him, clear a lot of cap space this year, and continue to gain more space as guys like Horford and Porzingis (and maybe Holiday) come off the books. Begin reloading with Pritchard, White, and whatever draft picks / young players they can get for Brown, and hope Tatum is somewhere around 90% in 2026/27.

Ian, are the members not donating or paying an annual donation? If yes, how? Thanks

Great insights. I did see something about possibly Houston wanting JB, I also think what complicated matters here is JB may be having off season procedure for his knee. He's got a lot of ball on his body having never missed the post season with the Cs. Going deep into the playoffs last 3,4 years as well. We do have some young guys who have been developing, JD Davidson, Schierieman and of course Pritchard. So I think it's very safe to say with Tatum out, possibly JB out or moved, along with KP it will be a different Celtics roster. I entrust Brad to still keep the team competitive and playoff bound. With the new owners they will need to keep those seats full!.
