DRAFT 69th overall pick - WR KYLE WILLIAMS, Washington St

Not open for further replies.
Hoping for that type of class.
Can he just embarrass folks?
We'll see.

I’m not asking for much from Williams, just hoping he’s THE ONE. The Pats have had such bad luck drafting and cultivating good WRs. It’s been forever since they got lucky with a good draftable WR.

So I’m not asking for much, just be the greatest receiver we’ve drafted since Edelman.

I think Williams has the tools, if he can get on the same page with Maye, I think he can become a good to very good receiver.

I know everyone is just focusing on the drafted WR, but I like all 4 rookie WR's they brought in via the draft and free agency, three speed demons and a slot guy who can get open in a phone booth.

DeMeer Blankumsee and/or Jeremiah Webb making the roster would be ideal, both add speed which every team can use... but both are smaller school longshots. WR has one of the highest failure rates in draft history.

We have to hit in ONE ****ING receiver in my lifetime right?

RIGHT????

Do yall understand how crazy it is that in 20 years of Brady, we never drafter a WR that was good?

A blind monk picking name out of bottomless hat would literally have more sucess than us at drafting. Absolutely ridiculous

They drafted 2 that were good: Deion Branch (2/65, 2002), and Julian Edelman (7/232, 2009).

And then they drafted, in the first 4 rounds:

- Bethel Johnson (2/45, 2003)
- Chad Jackson (2/36, 2006)
- Brandon Tate (3/83, 2009)
- Taylor Price (3/90, 2010)
- Aaron Dobson (2/59, 2013)
- Josh Boyce (4/102, 2013)
- Malcolm Mitchell (4/112, 2016)
- N'Keal Harry (1/32, 2019)
- Tyquan Thornton (2/50, 2022)
- Ja'Lynn Polk (2/37, 2024)
- Javon Baker (4/110, 2024)

They missed on fast receivers, slow receivers, tall receivers, short receivers, and everything in-between. A truly remarkable record. And the receivers they passed up were staggering.

A blind monk picking out of a hat would have crushed it in comparison.

Lol. You don’t think asking him to be as good as the guy they are inducting into the Patriots HOF is “ asking much?”

I’m not asking much of Drake Maye, but as the 3rd overall pick I just want him to be exponentially better than the guy they drafted at 199 in 2000.

I’m not giving you ****, just thought it was a funny comment.

Goddamn Elliott Wolf.

That wasn’t “ bad luck.” That was bad drafting. The strange thing ( iirc) is that when Holley asked Belichick what his top criteria for drafting wide receivers was he said that separation was the first thing he looked for. (War Room) And he drafted N’Keal Harry.

I think one of Belichick’s biggest flaws in drafting was the weight he gave to college coaches he was friends with. Herm Edward’s led him astray on Harry, and Urban Meyer completely screwed him on a bunch of guys.

To be fair, there was also David Givens in the 7th round of the 2002 draft... But yeah that's it.

Ignoring Golden Tate, Keenan Allen & AJ Brown, among others, are the big ones for me. In-ex-****ing-scusable.

Mandatory Edelman wasnt a WR when we drafted him post

I remember the first time I saw Curtis Martin; he seemed so quick and elusive. The clip on here showed Williams with that same movement. I know it was only a 5 second clip but I saw something I hadn't seen for a while.

Yep even those guys.

And Malcolm Mitchell shouldn't be in the bust category. He was very good, just had very bad luck with injuries. But he was one of the keys to a super bowl win, so.

Branch and Givens were good to very good WR's in the 1st Dynasty. Even many of the posters that remember that era still overlook them. While Branch wasn't in the elite category, he played very well as the Pats go to guy. Givens continually came up clutch bullying DB's on the sidelines for passes. I do think had Gronk and Hernandez not been drafted or busts in 2010, Tom's career in NE would've ended sooner. Those two picks kick started the next dynasty.
Mandatory Edelman wasnt a WR when we drafted him post
Edelman had said when he was drafted that he knew he was never going to be a QB. He had to learn to play WR as he didn't want to be a DB. With that said, it took him until his 5th year to get a chance to play.

They get a pass on Malcolm Mitchell. And they did better from the 6th round on (Givens, Edelman, Douglas, Boutte) and UDFA than they did in rounds 1-4. Plus they did well with TEs. But they sure missed out on a lot of talent.

Too old dont count

Edelman does deserve all his success. Julian is my all time Favorite Player besides Brady

We got lucky with him. 100%

I remember Edelman looking pretty good that preseason (can never forget that Wally Pipp quote by BB to Welker on the sideline) and again in that fateful Week 17 game at Houston when the turf monster got Welker. Edelman was one of the few Patriots that showed up when they got thrashed by the Ravens in the wildcard game the following week. It didn't surprise me when Welker left in free agency and Edelman was the one to step up in his place. I wonder how things would've turned out if Edelman had been given a chance to play more on offense during the Welker years.
