The name is great!. If you love underdog stories this guy is for you. He actually broke many of Cooper Kupps records at EWU. Not big, not a speed demon...BUT productive, super competitive, strong hands, focused and really really into football. The stats are eye popping.
Do I think he will make the team? Probably not, its a real long shot. But will be pulling hard for him.
Is he Julian Edelman the 2nd- no not at all. His 40 time was 4.71. But easy to root for

WR Efton Chism III, Eastern Washington

No player has had a faster rise this pre-draft process than Eastern Washington’s Efton Chism III. He stood out at the Hula Bowl and got the call-up to the East-West Shrine Bowl as a result.

While he is going to be exclusively a slot at the next level, but he’s a sharp route runner who has played through contact over the middle at a high level. He’s not going to impress with his 40-yard dash or explosiveness, but Chism III fits the hard hat scouting report you’ve read a million times before.

LOVE this signing. He was excellent against his peers at the Shrine game. He’s 5’11” 200, built like a running back. May not be blazing fast, but he always seems open, and always seems to create a lot of YAC with his shiftiness, and can break tackles. Great signing.

He was outstanding in Shrine Game practices and, I believe, won the MVP for the game itself. One thing to note, while he did only run a 4.71, he's not far behind Edelman in terms of short area quickness with a 4.06 shuttle (Edelman - 3.97) and a 6.77 3-cone (Edelman - 6.62).

The 3 cone results are quite evident on the field. The short area quickness is where he does his damage, it’s how he gets open so often. Once again, it may be my old eyes (all 4 of them), but he looks faster than 4.71. I’ve seen him run past guys.

A 6.62 3-cone is incredible. Wes Welker was over 7 secs.

Jalen Coker, the undrafted Holy Cross WR for the Carolina a Panthers, caught 32 passes as a rookie while Polk was a dolt and Javon Baker dreams of making rap videos and flaps his gums about being the best. Coker’s long arms, elite vertical, and ability to high point gave him a productive niche.

Chism’s niche will be in the slot doing Edelman type moves.

And Coker ran a 4.57.

Chism can carve out a role even with his stinky 4.71. His play speed is faster. As a slot guy with elite quickness, almost on Edelman’s otherworldly quickness, and superb route running, he can make it work.

Any one willing to bet against him? The guy lives and breathes football.

Guys can play faster than their 40, like Efton Chism and Ricky White, taken 238 by the Seahawks, which causes me pain.

Other guys like Tyquan Thornton with a 4.2….

I have my 53 bracketed in...
But, I might have to make room for Chism. He may have the "pop" that can't be ignored in camp.
I really hope we could slip him onto the PS - but he & Williams might outright push Polk & Baker out the door (maybe Boutte too).

4.71 seems almost impossible with his build and athleticism. Maybe there's a reason why and it's not his real speed? Not that he's a burner but more of a 4.58 type.

Cooper Kupp also played at East Washington.

Just sayin.
That’s who Elton Chism models his game after. This guy could very well be a spark in what was a lackluster WR group last year. Diggs, Hollins, rookie Kyle Williams, and now this undrated slot who, maybe, might develop that sixth sense with his QB.

Diggs, Williams and Douglas are locks
Hollins is a likely
Boutte, who knows, but he seemed to have a connection with Maye
Bourne likely cap casualty
Don’t think they’re ready to give up on Polk yet but he has to show solid improvement
Can see Vrabel not dealing with the Baker attitude
I think there is an avenue for Chism.

Diggs
Williams
Douglas
Boutte
Hollins
Polk/Chism

And had a number of his receiving records there broken by Chism.
Taking a lot of WRs out of the state of Washington.

Polk @ Washington - 10th in receiving throughout schools history.
Williams @ Washington State - 11th in receiving throughout schools history. Brandon Gibson is 4th.
Chism @ East Washington - Bourne also went to E Washington.

I hope he’s able to produce in the kicking game so he sticks.

A 4.7 forty for a WR is hard to get around. Christ I ran a 4.8. But so did Rodney Harrison who managed a long and close to HOF career by overcoming his lack of raw speed, by great instincts and anticipation and force of will.

But to make this team, this kid will have to do something great on ST's if he is going to make this team. He has to follow Jules' roadmap and become a punt returner and excel with his good hands and short area quickness. He is already way ahead of Jules as a receiver.

He DID look faster on film. Is that 40 time real. However, it's a great story and he will be a binky favorite in TC, but I can't get passed the 4.7. That's the same speed as our 265lb UDFA TE ran.

As with all these kids, from Campbell on down - We shall see.
