Should Josh McDaniels be locked out of the draft room next week?

In general I wonder who will actually be in the draft room. I could be wrong but I thought BB tended to have as few as possible ?......will Vrabel have more guys in there.

Another thing ...would all the possible scenarios have been played out already before draft day.....eg: if player x at position y is not there on the Pats board ......so is it just next man up ?

I am probably being too simplistic and things are a lot more dynamic and changing fast.

I’m sure they have run through all kinds of scenarios. Picking as high as they are this year simplifies things a lot, at least in the 1st Round. There are really only a couple of possible options. Trade offers could be a variable. We’ll see soon enough how it plays out. I think they want Will Campbell pretty badly. We will see if I’m right.

I seem to remember that Josh McDaniels had some awful draft picks and trades when he was HC for the Broncos and Raiders, but I am little fuzzy on the details. But he did squander a first round pick on Tim Tebow.

Also, according to an ESPN editorial, "McDaniels traded a future first-round pick to the Seahawks for a second-round selection and used it on defensive back Alphonso Smith, who lasted one season with the team." Seattle turned around and used the pick to select Pro Bowler Earl Thomas. So yes, I think that McDaniels (along with any Krafts) should be locked out of the draft room next week.

I always used to think that McDaniels was the little voice in BBs ear giving him bad draft advice, but it is pretty clear that BB could make awful picks on his own. So bad that half of the posters on this forum could have done a better job than BB, at least at WR.

I came hear to see who's triggered by the thread title. The responses didn't disappoint.

While his moves in Denver where from a guy who was asking to get fired, Ownership could've blocked the trade of Jay Cutler. They didn't, so they can't put the full blame on him. The trade up for Tebow and Alphonso Smith were two other moves which contributed to his downfall.

Then you have the Raiders moves. In principle, going after Adams was a good move. But he wasn't the same player and they didn't have a QB. Then you have the following draft where you knew it was over when they picked Tyree Wilson 7th overall. Wow!

This has been Fred’s mantra since forever. He ALWAYS claimed McDaniels had been the reason for bad draft choices. I’m just shocked it took this long for him to post this.

Naw, it was just that I was thinking that BB could not be that bad at drafting WRs, right, right, right? The GOAT coach could not become an imbecile on draft day, right? Wrong. I was giving BB the benefit of the doubt. As subsequent events proved, BB was indeed that bad. Horrible....but Josh has his own terrible record that warrants a lockout.

And just because McDaniels is a great OC, it does not mean that his is good on draft day(s). Let's face it; he sucks at drafting and the Patriots cannot afford to have another terrible draft. Lock him out, if not physically, at least just devalue his input down to zero. Do an exponetial backoff on this guy.

Again I am grasping at straws, but I suspect that Bob Kraft had a big hand in last years draft--he sort of said as much before the draft and how he should have reigned in BB in. Wolf could not be that bad at drafting, right? Ha. I guess we will see this year, but the Patriots cannot afford to do these experiments and blow another year of high draft picks.

What the Patriots need to do is record McDaniels and Krafts preferences for each round. Then a year later evaluation how they did; if their picks were good, then let them back in the draft room

The Patriots desperately needed someone like McConkey, but some rocket scientist in the draft HQ decided to trade down. Normally a gaff of this magnitude would (should) result in a firing, but no one was fired....making me considered who in the organization is not fire-able. It is far-fetched, but we do not have much insight into what goes on in the draft room

I don’t think it’s about locking him out, I’m not sure Josh had any intention of being there in the first place.

For me it’s about having your personnel and cap experts in the room and nobody else. The deciders don’t need voices in their ear sowing doubt or creating noise.

Stick to your vision, stay true to the board and take the best players and athletes available.

You could be right, but it still does not reflect very well on the organization.

The first problem is that they should have looked at the draft board and realized that there were no other WRs or LTs that would been worth the 37th pick. Trading down would gain them almost nothing. Or maybe they thought that Slo-Polk was just as good as McConkey but could also give them a deep threat which indicates incompetence on the part of the scouting team.

Or did they really think that McConkey would still be there at 37? Surely they must have known that SD was desperate for WRs. If they were not, then shame on them; total incompetence.

So let's assume that they knew that SD would take McConkey; this implies a serious draft evaluation failure. Here the Patriots were in desperate need for WR help, and a good candidate (maybe not perfect) falls into their lap and in am amazing feat of self-destruction, they whiff.

It's what I'd do. I'd have covered every single permutation of how my draft could go. Whatever my haul ends up being, it'd be something I already saw play out hundreds of times.

Teams have the manpower, money, tech, and every imaginable resource to make it so.

If at any point you have to scramble and reach for a Caedan Wallace, you did not prepare enough.

The only draft pick directly linked to McDaniels while with the Patriots was Laurence Maroney and that was because his brother reportedly recommended Maroney. Other than that there has been no evidence he directly influenced any pick good or bad. Just irrational hate by the Anti-McDaniels crowd (where is NEM to call him McKid?).

For the record, while the head coach of the Broncos, they drafted Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker. Both those guys would most likely be in the top three WR draft picks by Belichick or anyone in his coaching tree. Only Deion Branch would compete. I don't count Edelman because he was a QB who was a returner and WR project in the seventh.
