Should Josh McDaniels be locked out of the draft room next week?

It
I seem to remember that Josh McDaniels had some awful draft picks and trades when he was HC for the Broncos and Raiders, but I am little fuzzy on the details. But he did squander a first round pick on Tim Tebow.

Also, according to an ESPN editorial, "McDaniels traded a future first-round pick to the Seahawks for a second-round selection and used it on defensive back Alphonso Smith, who lasted one season with the team." Seattle turned around and used the pick to select Pro Bowler Earl Thomas. So yes, I think that McDaniels (along with any Krafts) should be locked out of the draft room next week.

I always used to think that McDaniels was the little voice in BBs ear giving him bad draft advice, but it is pretty clear that BB could make awful picks on his own. So bad that half of the posters on this forum could have done a better job than BB, at least at WR.
It seems sad how little folks trust Vrabel and his judgement. Vrabel will get advice from whomever he chooses and Vrabel will make all decisions.

no...it's bb. i've hated his drafts going back to the browns in the nineties and i wasn't even a browns fan...always pats. but his teams were always better than his drafting. so i was nervous when he came to us and only liked a few of his first drafts (seymour) but the teams were good. ironically, the draft i did like with maroney and jackson ended up a bust so what do i know. of course the edelman pick and mccourty gronk draft were good but i was sketchy on them. then hightower and jones draft was good but as the years went by his drafts were just so hit or miss with mostly misses that it cost us and got him fired. long way of saying i'm hoping for carter or hunter to fall and glad it's vrabel picking.

edit...oops, of course, the greatest pick of all time right there with johnny u going in the ninth round to the steelers or something.

While his moves in Denver where from a guy who was asking to get fired, Ownership could've blocked the trade of Jay Cutler. They didn't, so they can't put the full blame on him. The trade up for Tebow and Alphonso Smith were two other moves which contributed to his downfall.

Then you have the Raiders moves. In principle, going after Adams was a good move. But he wasn't the same player and they didn't have a QB. Then you have the following draft where you knew it was over when they picked Tyree Wilson 7th overall. Wow!

That is the heart of the problem. I can sort of understand how he could screwup in Denver. Rookie mistakes, eh? Albeit two really bad ones. But then his subsequent moves for the Raiders proved that he had not learned a thing, not a single thing. His incompetence on draft day appears to be baked in and incurable, like BB and WRs. He does not deserve a third chance; this is a crucial draft for the Patriots and they cannot afford to give a two-time loser another shot. Lock him out!

The only draft pick directly linked to McDaniels while with the Patriots was Laurence Maroney and that was because his brother reportedly recommended Maroney. Other than that there has been no evidence he directly influenced any pick good or bad. Just irrational hate by the Anti-McDaniels crowd (where is NEM to call him McKid?).

For the record, while the head coach of the Broncos, they drafted Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker. Both those guys would most likely be in the top three WR draft picks by Belichick or anyone in his coaching tree. Only Deion Branch would compete. I don't count Edelman because he was a QB who was a returner and WR project in the seventh.
I always find it funny especially around here where Bill had full control and people are so quick to blame him for it yet they never consider who has full control when discussing other coaches drafts.

By in large I find this board puts way too much weight on draft success. It's just one small piece of a much larger puzzle.

Personally I see the draft as mostly a place to replace talent you can't keep in free agency and then occasionally you need to really hit on a few stars. If you miss in the draft then just means you have to find it other ways either undrafted or coaching up someone else's free agents. Also with an occasional free agent splash or trade.

I'm obviously one of the boards biggest BB guys and what I've mostly learned is that other than QB just about every problem can be covered up by excellent coaching and a little luck finding guys like Jules or woodhead or whatever other flukey things found its way to us.

QBs can be managed a little bit but for the most part you either have one of the top 5-10 or you're basically screwed.

Ironically enough, his 2023 was excellent. Not the players we needed but excellent.

WR Danny who never should have been allowed to leave.
I knew who you meant, bud. The Andelman thing was funny that's all. Dating yourself like the rest of us old effs if you go back to the Andelman days on EEI.

So far I think he is great, but the jury is still out. Hopefully he has the cache/cajones to stand up to Bob Kraft and make the right personnel decisions, not the ones that will save the most money. That the Patriots had an up & down FA period makes me think that Cheapskate Bob may still be meddling....the results were good for the D, but pathetic, as usual, for the OL. Oh well, we will see.

Vrable was a hard-nosed football player and he may bring that as a coach. This would be good. Parcells was Old School like that on draft day; let's hope that Vrable can be the same next week.

I remember him, of course, being an official old goat but it was Johnny Most that I enjoyed the best; the ultimate homer.

I do not care for the cruel jokes about my age; I just underwent major surgery so I might be a bit wonky.

I thought he was a celebrity food critic

Good luck with recovery!

He might have been. He talked about some off the wall chit.
I was kidding his kids run Phantom Gourmet which Eddies hot dog obsession probably in no small coincidence started off.

Oh no kidding. I had no idea.

Considering they still occasionally do hot dog restaurants, I'd say that's a pretty good bet.

Josh McDaniels is one of the best offensive minds in recent memory. Does he have his warts? Of course. Is he HC material? Doesn't seem to be the case.... but he 100% should and most likely will be involved in the evaluations and selections of any offensive draftees.

Why?

Maybe he has been asked to give his thoughts and opinions on certain offensive draftees but he’ll have ZERO control over who actually gets drafted.

He’ll be a fly on the wall in the War Room.
