I would ease out my expectation for what we are going to get if we trade down from 4.

In a weak draft, it's probably good to accept a low ball
Last year's draft was an extraordinary one for QB's: 6 of the top 12 picks and all were worth it. But other than QB, this year's draft isn't weak. There's many players who could be dominant, including at WR, edge, DT, TE, RB, and yes OT. I think there will be some trade action in the top 5 and top 10. Because it won't involve any can't-miss QB's, there won't be crazy returns, but if we can get an extra 2nd or even high 3rd and still get a starting LT, that would be great.

I mean, did they check his damn shoulder before giving him 40 million for 2025?
The $40M was guaranteed for injury, so the end result would have been the same. Just a rough contract from the start, compounded by the mistake of pushing as much cap hit to the future as possible.

The reason why I wish they had kept Milton.

Ya, he is a Boys fan, but its doubtful that he plays if Dak stays upright.
My first thought as well... Starting QB's always go down in camp/pre-season... This is why you don't negotiate against yourself and panic trade young QB's with upside.

Milton was obviously fine being a backup if he went to the Cowboys. The front office weren't even protecting Drake Maye, they were protecting Josh Dobbs... Facepalm.

Spot on the money.

Who doesn't want players who believe that they can beat out the # 1 guy and take his job? I am very concerned heading into this draft with the current front office.

See my response above.
2 years, $100 million is still a ton of money to spend on a QB whom you've already replaced before he takes a single snap under center.

Individually, each move was fine. Taken in tandem, it showed extreme disfunction.

Cousins was a 2 year deal at $50M per year ($100M guaranteed even though it was said to be a 4 year deal). Penix is on a 4 year rookie contract. Not ideal, I agree, but not outrageous if you want to make a short term run at the owner's request while plannig for the long term. That GM might be sticking around for awhile.
Yeah, Cousins was their Alex Smith… except he sucked. I don’t think it was a terrible strategy, but a lot of the complaints were that Penix was the most pro-ready, so why draft him to sit behind Cousins.

How could it be extreme dysfunction if it worked out?

True story: I was once playing blackjack at Foxwoods and a girl got dealt a (hard) 18. She signaled to hit. We all tried to talk her out of it. Even the dealer tried to help talk her out of it but she wouldn't listen and said she had a "good feeling" and insisted on hitting. Sure enough, the dealer gave her a 3.

Morale of the story: Just because something "worked out" doesn't mean you're not a stupid mother****er for doing it.

Yup. The GM might have just gotten lucky and might be an idiot, but that is not dysfunction.

"Deviation from the norms of social behavior in a way regarded as bad".

Carr is 34, I thought he was older I was ready to say he is on his way out of the league (I dont think he will settle for a backup role) but at 34 he can still play a few more years

He is certainly still at an age where he can keep playing but the problem is he’s not very good. Every passing year there are more young, talented QBs that enter the league and make it harder for Carr to keep a starting role. He’ll be 35 in 2026, and it’s worth noting that QBs like Kirk Cousins and Matt Ryan saw their production fall off a cliff once they turned 36. If he misses this season then I think he’ll have played his last game as a Saint, they’re going to find his replacement either this season or in next year’s Draft. Carr might have two seasons left in him before he’s out of the league entirely.

Would you do 4, 38 and Olave for 9, 40 and 93?

I would.
I wouldn’t hate it.

But moving up in the first round usually comes at a steep premium

New Orleans gets #4 and one of the Patriots third round picks and Patriots get #9 a second round pick and a third next year.

It’s not easy to move up to the front of the draft

This was a real gut punch to Saints fans given that Carr was testing the free agency waters before Loomis ended up extending him. The Saints don't have the cap space to sign a legit free agent QB, and Spencer Rattler doesn't appear to be the answer. Be it Sanders this year or one of the top QBs next year, the Saints need to draft their next QB soon. If for any other reason, they could use a rookie contract to clean up the mess Carr put them in.

I mean, did they check his damn shoulder before giving him 40 million for 2025?

As a fan of both teams, I absolutely think the Saints should trade up to 4 to get Sanders. Question is will the Patriots take it.
I think they would ABSOLUTELY take it. (assuming Carter and Hunter are off the board) But the problem is, why would the Saint bother to offer us anything. There is no reason to trade with us even if they want Sanders. Why pay a premium to us, when they can just as easily trade with the Jags for less. NEITHER the Pats or Jags are drafting a QB there.

I love the idea of the Pats trading down for picks, but I'm having trouble thinking of any reasonable value for someone trading all the way to #4 to grab someone who they can easily trade with the Jags for less.

Sanders to Saints makes a lot of sense.
We can only pray they get worried and trade up to 4 to make sure they get him. It's not just whether he would fall to 9, it's whether Steelers or another team trade up into 5 - 8 to take him before Saints.
I'd love to land at 9 - AND get an extra high 2nd round pick (maybe more).
Then we can get whichever of the top 2 OT's is there - OR, if Warren falls to 9 grab him there.
Then use the 2 - 2nd's to trade up to lower 1st to get Conerly or Banks.
That would be my ideal winning draft.
Then we use the 3-7 rounds to stock up on EDGE, FS, RB, WR

5 stages of grief:

1) Denial: We will still get Hunter or Carter anyway
2) Anger: Damn you, Jerod Mayo!!
3) Bargaining: OK, we can still trade #4 down, get a player we want, and pick up and extra 2nd rounder
4) Depression: The worst case scenario has emerged
5) Acceptance: We aren't getting Hunter, Carter, or trading for any extra picks. We are in probably the worst position possible for the 2025 draft.

I would like to formally invite my fellow Patriots fans to stop humiliating yourselves join me in step 5.

This just increased the value of our pick ten fold if Sanders is still there.

It's happening.
Holy schitt……
Ten #4 1st rounders soon to be in NE’s account.
