NFL football has not really changed since the Patriots were born in 1960.
Yes, they've been major innovations like the WCO etc etc thru the years.
But consider this: The 3 most important units by far on any team are:
1. Qb
2. Ol and DL tie
This is true today, was true in 2010,2000,1990,1980,1970,1960.
Wrs, cbs and rbs are irrelevant compared to these other units.
I had this argument online in 2003. I won.
Go back and study every single SB Champ ever. Virtually every single one was strong on all 3 of the 3 big units.
You can innovate all you want. The basic importance of the Big 3 will never change. Never.

Good for Maye’s development, a good role model for other young WRs. But those two things are not worth a good draft pick, nor are they worth a ton of cash. If they could get him for like a 5th, sure, I guess. If they can get him for a 4th and LA eats some of his salary, sure. But he’s not a long term solution/piece, he would be a bridge.
Yeah at that point, you bring in someone washed like Amari Cooper on a nothing contract for 2-3 years to mentor guys as the WR5. I'm not wasting draft capital and 20 million/yr to a guy coming off another major injury, who is also 32.

Amari Cooper is a fair comp, but I also doubt Cooper will get a “nothing contract” in free agency this year. He will get at least $12M APY in my opinion

Thought Cooper would click a little better with Allen now I'm leery.

Draft capital? We have over a 100 million in cap space? Didn't last year show us that it's not about the money? We where high bidders on F.A. wide receivers on a couple of occasions. Dream on... your to good looking to dance with the ugly chick's, only young, hybrids top of the line. Same Ole receiver core, same Ole results. We have a class problem in NE. We gonna do the sit and wait strategy for a stud WR for another year....

until they solidify the offensive line and the run defense, top of the line WR is a luxury

Pats fans sure love a roster full of "mentors" and stable ponies

Amari Cooper is washed, that's the problem.
Now if you're the Bills, taking a run at Cooper Kupp makes all the sense in the world. Kansas City too for that matter.

Terry McLaurin's not a superstar? Really?
Because he was drafted and has played his entire career in Washington, so he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves nationally.

Imagine if the Pats pull off a trade for Kupp AND sign Higgins. Almost zero chance they get either IMO, but it's fun to dream.

Excuse me, did you just have an "episode" and miss the 20 dynastic years prior to the last 3 bad ones I think we did pretty well with the WR's and TE's we managed to acquire and keep over the years and managed to have a TRUE #1 for only about a year and a half of them

Having a true #1 is certainly better than not having one, but the LACK of a true elite WR has rarely been the #1 reason for the lack of success of a team, especially if they are good in other areas of the game. Just think of great WR's who never saw great team success. We can talk a LOT more about Chris Hogan's superbowl success stories than say Justin Jefferson, who I personally think is the best current WR.

Again, I'm not against WR's. It's just a supply and demand thing. EVERY single year we seem to get 5-10 WR professionals in the FA market and a dozen excellent college prospects. Of course, I hope the guy we pick in April (and we WILL pick one) turns out to be a yearly all pro and a future HOFer, but If he turns out to be Julian Edeleman, I'll be OK too.

As a general policy I put an emphasis on going after the rarest of players, the guys who are 300-350 lbs AND are among the rarest of athletes on the planet AND have insane competitive natures. There may not be that many elite guys who fit that category this year, but there will be one for us at #4 and others who will fall into the category of potential long-term starter all through the first 2 days of the draft.

Without naming names, I will be VERY happy if the first 4 picks of our draft go DT, Edge, OT, and RB/WR

It's a mix of both. The key to winning will always be a QB and being solid in the trenches.

But the reasons why and what you do with that advantage is different. There hasn't been a Super Bowl won since 2019 without the winning team having star receiver or TE talent to make big plays and get quick points. AJ Brown and Devonta Smith Last Night, Kelce the last two years, Cooper Kupp having an all time year before that, Mike Evans/AB/Gronk before that, and then Hill/Kelce.

Before that we used to say "oh well high end receivers are a luxury and you can win with just several really solid ones who can methodically beat a defense". Now that doesn't happen because teams are so boom or bust and scoring so fast that you can't afford not to keep up. Years ago it used to be about having a workhorse RB and you used your line to lighten the load on him a little bit.

The trenches are important for what they facilitate. But the focus of what they facilitate has changed.

Also even in the trenches what they mainly do now and focus on is different. You are screwed nowadays if you don't have great pass blockers on your line even if they are solid run blockers. If you don't have a pass rush but can plug holes on the defensive line, you have nothing in the current league. The what hasn't changed, the why has.

The most likely scenario remains the Rams will cut Kupp, who has battled injuries the past three seasons. Kupp is due a roster bonus next week, which Snead, via Adam Grosbard of the LA Daily News, conceded provides something of a deadline for a resolution.

So essentially Kupp needs to be traded in the next few days or he will get cut. Because of this, he will 90% most likely be cut, but the Pats might be able to swoop in to pick him up for a late pick swap.
I think his salary is too much for production. He will most likely get cut only.

Once he is cut, he will never sign with pats. They should offer a 6th or 7th soon

Cooper is done. He was a shell of himself in Buffalo. But I would be fine with bringing Kupp here, I just doubt he wants to come.
