For whatever reason JMD is like a number of other capable coaches who are good coordinators and failures as HC. My guess is that JMD spent a good deal of time and effort working on his leadership style between Denver and Las Vegas. There is a difference between being able to hold conversations in a social setting or leading in a corporate environment vs. owning the hearts and minds of NFL players. Best case for the Pats is that he settles in to become OC version of Steve Spagnuolo.
Agreed, in the end it comes down if McD has the realization that something needs to change, if he wants to be a HC (which could be a topic of its own)

But anyway, he's our OC now, let's say what he can come up with.

I've said this before, but one of the things related to him that I didnt like is his scheme is to WRs, which I don't think its a coincidence that he is part of this legacy of us never developing a receiver in the BB era. maybe his EP system is not that complex per se, but his system requires more "study time" especially with the QB (the whole "seeing the same thing as Brady" that was so hard to grasp.) I wonder trully how many WR, the ~classical uber athlete responds to this whole idea. I think this fits with what you are saying, in a way, that he can't transmit everything all that well to everyone - especially the divas in the football world

anyway, I've said that I've come around, but I still have my concerns.

Gaffney, Moss, Welker, Lloyd, Amendolla, Lafell, Hogan, Bourne, Cooks
And Bill signed Meyers, Douglas and Boutte

and brought in Agolor and Smith who have now done well elsewhere'

Perhaps, the coaches and the OC's should look in the mirror when they want to find fault.

I've come around on McDaniels

Yeah, I do think he has problems, which I don't see going away (maybe he grew when away, who knows)

but given the hires around the league, given the staffs around... Even if his peak might be outclassed nowadays, his bottom is great. I would be surprised if Drake doesnt improve with him, as all QBs seemed to at their best with him in command

I think it's ulter bs that he wont be poached, as history is written by victors. If Maye flourishes, McD is not he 2 time HC that failed, he's the QB Guru who creates superstar QBs again (if he wants)

Anyway, let's get this season going already

I agree. If MacDaniels does a good job with Maye and the offense then at a minimum some good college programs will offer him a HC job. At which point they will be hard pressed to find an available OC that runs Erhardt-Perkins, so Maye will be forced once again to learn another system.

Ben Johnson will probably be looking for an OC job around the same timeline.

Or we brought in a couple of young offensive assistants to work with Josh maybe one of them can be groomed for it.

So you are claiming that we are just assuming that MacDaniels will run an EP offense, when in fact you realize that no offensive coordinator has changed systems before. That’s not an assumption, that’s a belief based upon 100%

At this point it’s safe to assume that you don’t actually know what an offensive system is. MacDaniels may very well make changes to the offense he runs, but it will still be based on the EP system, and everything that goes with it, language, reads, blocking approach etc.
Not remotely, just refuting that McDaniels carries with him absolute power installing a rigid, immoveable system designed specifically and only for Tom Brady that will irreparably harm Maye while the new Head Coach who actually is the deciding factor in all of this has no say or sway.

fair enough

My point was that while there has been an incredible amount of criticism with regard to the inability of the past administration to draft, sign or evaluate WR's over the past five years, this whining is wildly overstated.

Even now, consider that we all agree that a top WR should be or should have been signed or traded for.

And then, we have the HORRIBLE WR corp of the top addition, Boutte, Bourne, Douglas, Polk, and Baker? Really?
=======
Has the past staff really left Josh and Mike a terrible WR group? Really? It seems that they have simply decided to wait until this off-season to sign or trade for a top WR.

My guess is that Josh and Maye will do fine with this group, of course including a top signing and perhaps another to compete in camp.

I agree and think he made the wrong choice passing on NE (if that were the case).

Except no said anything remotely like that, so you are just setting up strawmen and arguing against yourself. Have fun with that.

Woohooo

Not looking outside the Patriots family again McDaniels is a myth with an overly complicated outdated system that has never developed an elite outside WR and that's sucked without Brady and don't give me Mac Jones,

Be as well hiring Byron Leftwich he was good with Brady too and an "offensive genius" and unemployed and terrible without him, that's Josh McDaniels.

People don't like the facts, they think Josh McDaniels is good cause Tom Brady carried him and...

This is a Tom Brady offense that doesn't fit Drake Maye.

Did not want him as he is overrated because of Brady and it is just recycling of old ideas. When are we going to develop or tap into new offensive talent?

Right, because he did it so well in Denver, St. Louis and LV. He's got a horrible reputation around the NFL.

This board was loving the O'Brien hire, only to show how bad he really was as an OC. McDaniels does not have Bill as his protector, Tom Brady as his QB...

He's never been good without Bill Belichick holding the leash.

He doesn't have 6 rings by accident because it wasn't an accident that he was under the GOAT coach and had the GOAT QB.

Also the kicker was that in his last two HC stints his big issue was pulling a Flores and treating the franchise QB like **** and discarding him because he wanted to big league him and act like because he coached Tom Brady he walked on water. If the offense doesn't take off, you'll hear chirps all of a sudden that Maye is the problem and that Josh isn't sold on him.

He had Tom Brady
At this point he's like Adam Gase hopefully I'm wrong

Two words: Tom Brady

my biggest worry is that McDaniels has Maye running the Brady passing offense

On the other hand his offense is notoriously difficult to pick up for wide receivers and requires a cerebral QB to handle the multiple option reads.

Will Josh McDaniels be able to develop Maye
to his top potential in this system or will this be a roadblock for his rise?

Rumpelstiltskin would be aghast at the lack of straw.

You’re right, out of the thousands who post here some do hate MacDaniels, I’m just not one of them. You should go argue with them.

I was always in on Boutte, pleased he is showing what he is capable of doing
Once we add some guys on the outside.. Boutte could have a jabar gaffney type role.
