From The Athletic - "Inside Mayo's Disastrous Season"

I don’t think he gets a DC job
You get interviewed and you have to outline your plan
My guess is they will not be too excited
The networking will kill Mayo here, too. He doesn't have any connections to try to leverage into interviews or jobs. Who did he work with who is now a HC?

You can't tell me he didn't know he was getting fired. If he didn't know then he obviously would've lost the game to get himself the top pick and get more talent for his team. He would only screw the team like that if he knew he was gonna be out the door and was being spiteful. And if so, shame on the Krafts for letting it happen.

The only alternative is that he didn't know he was getting fired but he is such a bad coach and was so stupid that he couldn't figure out how to throw a game properly and got out-tanked by McDermott.
If schefter knew pre-game, Mayo did too.

Mayo was known for being a film junkie when he was a player. It was an unknown what his actual defensive X and O accumen was when he was an assistant.

I for one was thoroughly amazed at how lacking he was in that regard once the Bellichecks were gone.

He was and is a film junkie, who was and is great at breaking down and explaining plays, and commanded an institutional knowledge of football schemes that was probably on par with Brady's.

But, some of the problems I saw with him as a HC, were some of the same problem I saw with him as a player: an inability to apply this institutional knowledge at game speed, to react instinctively instead of thinking. As a player, he had ZERO instinct and was almost always half a second behind on every play. You could see him questioning himself, doubting, and thinking too much.

And as a HC, he just couldn't keep up with how fast coaching adjustments are made within the game. I kind of tuned out on the season after seeing him get his ass beat badly by McVay.

I'm sure that if he could play chess without a timer, he would win handily. But when the clock is ticking down, right there on the table, he chokes.

The playing cards thing is nuts. It’s one thing for Ricky Henderson (rip) to do this in the Mets locker room as a veteran but Mayo is supposed to be the leader. But then again Ricky did Ricky things. It’s really crazy how aside from the timing how inept Mayo was

I would kick Mayo's ass in chess. < 20 moves.

Can just tell by his shortsightedness.

Kraft is still speaking highly of Mayo from a personal standpoint but something is not right here. I feel like they discovered he is actually a snake and they wanted to blindside him and get him out of there before he could screw them over any further. If he was a "high character guy" like they claim then they would've let him talk to his team, like you read about in the Vrabel piece from the Athletic after he was fired.
The implicit assignment was to lose to the Bills. He knew before the game that it was his last, so he went for broke with the play calling so he could screw over the team on the way out (he IS a vindictive snake). Kraft was furious. That’s why the boom was lowered so quickly and that’s why he was escorted off.

The more we get details
I can only ask myself
WTF was Kraft thinking
He doesn’t have a Rolodex. He has an index card

Yup. The bottom line: Kraft MUST have known Mayo was not ready for the job. And Mayo should have known, too. Was the contract language really so ironclad the Patriots couldn't have gone with someone else? Either Kraft is more clueless about football than anyone imagined or his hand was forced. Mayo either was totally naive about what he was stepping into or arrogantly oversold on himself. Vrabel should have had this job.

Also, does anyone think Mayo could be trusted with even a DC job anywhere? Whether he's qualified and capable is open to question, IMO.

I think Mayo sold people on he was the defensive coordinator and Bill was holding him back by forcing him to work with Steve. And Bob was so pissed at Bill, he bought it.

Maybe he thought the win would save his job?
Or wanted to go out on a win for the rest of the league to see.
I’m curious where Mayo ends up?
I’m guessing at home propping his feet up playing cards:
He will “take a year off to reflect” before coming back in 2026 as an inside linebacker coach in Jacksonville or something

Scott Zolak is saying that part of that story isn’t true, he said Mayo never sat at the front of the plane, he was always in the back, he was playing cards with the players which is odd after a bad loss.
Isn't that what everyone wanted?

The opposite of Bill Belichick.

I feel no sorrow for Mayo or anyone else in his situation. These guys already have enough money to live on the rest of their lives without ever working again.

I'd rather move on than pile on.

That said (see what I did here?) there is nothing surprising about any of this stuff and anything else that will come out. It is mindblowing but also unsurprising at the same time. All of it was evident from the very beginning.
You have to wonder if Kraft's are involved in these Mayo hit pieces. The more insider info that comes out, the more Kraft looks the good guy.

Thus far, I've only seen Strahan stick up for Mayo not getting a fair chance.

I would not be surprised if he just faded out of the football spotlight entirely and started doing speaking engagements or something. His HC contract is guaranteed.
