Steve B at DC probably keeps the defense close to what they were last year, probably still a dropoff without Bill, but maybe middle of the league. That would most likely be good enough to swing a few of the 6 one score losses... let's say half... the team would be 7-10.

I have complete faith in Mayo's ability to drag a team to the bottom. I'm sure he still thinks he had little to do with his team's performance.

With the defensive coordinator role, the other most important spot on his staff, Mayo was surprisingly decisive. Even though Steve Belichick, Bill’s son, had been the Patriots’ defensive play caller in recent years while they routinely boasted top-10 units, Mayo didn’t offer him the chance to continue calling plays, according to a team source, opting instead for young defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington. Mayo offered Steve a lesser role, but the younger Belichick declined and left to become the defensive coordinator at the University of Washington

Mayo knew Steve was the X and O's brain, and didn't want to look bad....the bad thing for Covington is he was seen as a young up and coming coach prior to this season....Mayo may have screwed both of their careers.

My two cents and final opinion is he was fired because he simply did not have a clue about being a HC and I honestly doubt his defensive coaching chops. I think all the buzz we heard last year; and to some degree prior, about how Mayo installs the game plan, essentially the mastermind of the defense and Steve is simply the playcaller.... was a pile of 100% pure USDA Grade A hot steaming Horse ****. Its clear now, all that was PR put out by his camp. I am sure that really solidified his relationship with Bill.

Imagine being Bill and you recruit one of your favorite players, knowing he was a smart, tough nosed guy, only to have him run behind your back ****ing you at every turn. People in the league talk, he may never step on a sideline again unless its with a microphone in his hand.

I give Kraft a lot of credit for one thing. He really, really, really didn't want to fire Jerod Mayo. And, if left to make the decision in isolation, he would have given him another year, with some coaching changes beneath him. But in his press conference, he mentioned he views his role as custodian, not owner, and that puts limits on his decision making that otherwise wouldn't be there. And then he specifically called out the fans as being a major factor in his thought process. So he made the decision as custodian, not owner and friend of Mayo. So, kudos to Bob.

Kraft is still speaking highly of Mayo from a personal standpoint but something is not right here. I feel like they discovered he is actually a snake and they wanted to blindside him and get him out of there before he could screw them over any further. If he was a "high character guy" like they claim then they would've let him talk to his team, like you read about in the Vrabel piece from the Athletic after he was fired.

It has to be because of them winning that meaningless game against Buffalo who played backups while Mayo played most starters. What Mayo did was absolutely disrespectful.

You can't tell me he didn't know he was getting fired. If he didn't know then he obviously would've lost the game to get himself the top pick and get more talent for his team. He would only screw the team like that if he knew he was gonna be out the door and was being spiteful. And if so, shame on the Krafts for letting it happen.

The only alternative is that he didn't know he was getting fired but he is such a bad coach and was so stupid that he couldn't figure out how to throw a game properly and got out-tanked by McDermott.

I think it was the former. That’s why the Krafts wasted no time in firing him and had him escorted out. He likely cost the team a couple of draft picks which hurts a lot.

If the Patriots backups beat the Bills backups, then fine, but we had mostly starters out there while the Bills didn’t.

He played Milton but I am pretty sure he only did that because he was instructed to. And at the same time, he went "balls to the wall" and had AVP calling all kinds of RPOs, designed runs, going for it on 4th down - **** they never used with Maye but suddenly were breaking out and being aggressive in the one game they definitely should not have been.

I want to believe it was the former, but Mayo was such a terrible coach, I can't discount the latter.

I don't think we know. There was that awkward moment before we knew Steve was leaving and Covington was named the DC where no one was sure if Steve was leaving or not.

To be honest, I think Mayo wanted Steve gone and made sure the offer to stay wasn't all that genuine or attractive. And I think it's because he didn't want anyone to know the coach's son was carrying him on Xs and Os during their joint DC time.

Yep and he will most likely have another shot at being a DC. Not being ready to be a HC doesn't mean he can't learn from this failed experience

I could see him joining a staff as a special assistant while he learns from his mistakes and improve.
