From The Athletic - "Inside Mayo's Disastrous Season"

Yup. The bottom line: Kraft MUST have known Mayo was not ready for the job. And Mayo should have known, too. Was the contract language really so ironclad the Patriots couldn't have gone with someone else? Either Kraft is more clueless about football than anyone imagined or his hand was forced. Mayo either was totally naive about what he was stepping into or arrogantly oversold on himself. Vrabel should have had this job.

Also, does anyone thing Mayo could be trusted with even a DC job anywhere? Whether he's qualified and capable is open to question, IMO.
Ironclad or not
Why was he so adamant about losing Mayo to another team
If you are in the building with these guys and have seen how it all works for 30 years
You could not see that this guy was just learning the trade
Oh. He related well with the players
As far as Mayo. We seen how arrogant he was trashing BB on his way out
Mayo will never be a DC
Year wasted but hopefully Vrabel is here soon

I would not be surprised if he just faded out of the football spotlight entirely and started doing speaking engagements or something. His HC contract is guaranteed.

His true calling just might be what he specified in his introductory press conference: "building character in young men and young women." Maybe some sort of organization for disadvantaged youth, etc.

If true that just blows my mind, especially if Steve was willing to stay on as DC.

That by far would be the most egregious lack of judgment Mayo could have shown. One would have thought Wolf or Kraft would have at least tried to intervene on that one.

So true…one bad thing that could’ve happened if SB stayed around was the team winning a few more games thus dropping our draft position even more. So thanks for not keeping SB on dude!!

/S

Effectively getting rid of Steve B to install Covington was a ridiculous decision. Mayo deserved fired for that alone.

Not ridiculous…Criminal…

Maybe he can get a job with UNC

Maybe I’ll hit the lotto too…

I'm sure he was an easy mark.
Part of me thinks that was the role Mayo was made for. Just hanging out with the guys. Why did he even bother to get into coaching?

He will “take a year off to reflect” before coming back in 2026 as an inside linebacker coach in Jacksonville or something
Or just not. Maybe he’s sick of coaching and wants to just be the rich stay-at-home dad.

His ego persuaded him it would be easy. And if it wasn't, his "charismatic leadership" would motivate others to do things for him.

It's ironic the way people use the word meritocracy.

It was created to expand criteria when Jews were outperforming your typical child of privilege at private colleges. "Well, we can't judge them on tests and academic abilities anymore, we need a new set of criteria!" "Hey, let's start looking at their social circles, what they get to do out of school, like travel to Asia, fencing and squash tournaments, and let's take that into consideration. We'll stop calling it 'merit' and we'll call it 'meritocracy'!"

The funny thing is part of DEI is to emphasize grades/test scores over all this "extra" that really only helps legacies and well-heeled people. Study after study shows this. And this is why the DEI people at all the Ivies forced the schools to go back to test scores after Covid.
meritocracy
noun [ C or U ]

UK

/ˌmer.ɪˈtɒk.rə.si/ US

/ˌmer.əˈtɑː.krə.si/

Add to word list
a social system, society, or organization in which people get success or power because of their abilities, not because of their money or social position:
The company is a meritocracy. Good work is rewarded with promotions.

I was not aware that was how the BB Jr. departure went down.

I remember Mayo saying Stephen would have a role in the org if he wanted it, but did not know he was never offered DC.

Wonder if he would have stayed if he was offered it.
There was no chance Mayo wanted Steve around which is understandable. I would not want the son of the coach I replaced who won 6 rings. He offered him a demotion knowing full well he would turn it down.

Mayo is going to teach LB’s how to tackle 10 yards downfield.

You mean try to tackle but whiff and then leave it up to the corner

Or have a QB bounce off you - as if you didn't even exist - to convert a 3rd/long; then throw a TD pass over your head on the very next play... See Wilson, Russell 2012...

What about Brian though? None of Mayo's choices made any sense lol
