It's too bad the Giants won't let go of veteran HC Brian Daboll.
I think giants realized that they will not find a better coach than daboll this year.

Colts, raiders, giants , cowboys not making changes opens up things. So number of openings and good coaches for this year are also limited.

Vrabel seems to be the consensus safe choice.

Johnson seems to be the innovative hot pick. One of his coaches Adam Gase was “this guy” 5-8 years ago. It didn’t work out for the Dolphins or Jets. No dividends..

Detroit has Goff who was groomed by McVay, ST Brown elite wr, Jameson Williams 1st round wr, Sam La Porta top 5 te, Jahmyr Gibbs Who is a an incredible weapon on par with Kamara, Sproles etc. plus a bruising back in Montgomery. Top 5 pro bowl left tackle in Sewell, and a probowl center Ragnow.

That’s a lot of sucking and futility to get all those players. The GM did an incredible job. How much of this offense is having elite talent vs coaching and schemes? A bit of both?

Not against the Ben Johnson hiring by any means. McVay worked out for the Rams who was in a similar position years ago. But he’s not 100% a safe bet. Like any rookie coach he’s got to prove it he can do it on the biggest stage.
There’s no 100% safe pick.

New York really likes Daboll and blames the team roster for being in disarray. They’ve been uncharacteristically forgiving of him in the media.

They are smoking crack if they don't think better coaches than Daboll are out there

I must be the only fan who hates watching bad defense more than I hate watching good offense. I take very little pleasure in watching my team throw the ball all over the field when they are down 17 points and can't stop the run.
You probably have psychological damage from the Pats teams during the dry patch, LOL. I agree with your underlying point that championship teams need to be good on both sides of the ball.

Joe Shoen is terrible. Signing Daniel Jones to that 4 yr 160 million dollar extension was baffling. For within 1 yr to be offering that package for Drake Maye speaks a lot about his irresponsibility with other peoples money.

Now if Daboll told Shoen, I want this guy leading my team and I can fix him? That’s a different story.

Daboll has been ok, his reputation has been tarnished by Daniel Jones reverting back to his normal level after signing the big contract. My cynical side wonders if there is some connection to the Flores situation where the teams feels that they cannot move on from Daboll until the lawsuit is settled.

Daboll was a victim of his own success.

If he comes in the first year and goes 6-11, and they change QB's he would have had a better chance in NY.

Basically, we hit on 2 QBs (one to start, one to back-up with unknown potential.)
I'd dial this back a bit. In the same vein as judging how bad a draft is on only rookie performance metrics; decisions regarding Milton after only one game against second tier competition where there's no game planning or tendency exploitation by the opposing coaching is likewise premature.

Milton played well, but it was a preseason style contest. Need to see a lot more.

Nope, there are many who recognize the value of balance. KC is winning this year not on the back of its offense, but its defense just as one example (#4 in ppg allowed). The Lions just clinched on their defense against the Vikes. You need all three components somewhere in the middle of the rankings upwards (offense, defense, and special teams) with one of those in the top ten, and/or a one-of-a-kind (think 85 Bears) single aspect to have playoff level success.

If any aspect is exploitable - it will be exploited. If your defense simply can't stop the run in your example you're likely right you won't win because you won't have your offense on the field as many times needed to score the requisite points consistently.

Yes, agreed. I was really just talking about the pleasure of viewing.

I live in Buffalo and have a friend who has had season tickets in the family since the 1950s. He sits 10 rows up behind the Bills at the 50 yard line. He treated me to a Bills - Saints game about 5 years ago and it was the most excruciating thing I've ever seen from a fanbase's perspective. The Saints ran the ball over and over and over with the Bills incapabale of stopping them. It was like watching a baby seal get bludgeoned again and again and again for 3 hours.

It would be much easier to watch, and much less excruciating, Mark Sanchez butt fumble the ball over and over. At least then you have some kind of Benny-Hill-comedy going on.

By the way, I just looked up the game:

48 carries for 298 yards

I've been to blowouts at several stadiums, Buffalo, New England, Meadowlands, Pittsburgh, Detroit, but I've never seen fans so angry and despondent as that Saints-Bills game. It was crazy.

I tend not to separate them in my mind frankly. As an example I tended to either get distracted or turn off to watch via DVR later most of the Pats games this year. Whether knowing a false start or hold was going to derail the O most drives or watching the opposing O dominate time of possession by BOTH having all day to throw and inability to stop the run made watching excruciating.

My son (a Lions fan...just weird - got it from hanging out with his friends from MI) watches them religiously and the experience was more pleasurable even though I honestly didn't care about the team...it held interest.

Exactly. The question I ask myself is, do you give up the "chance" on possibly missing out on the next Andy Reid, if you will, but possibly destabilize your organization for the next three years or longer. Or do you hire the proven commodity that will stabilize the organization?

Let him. He goes to the Jets, he'll be like ever other Jets HC. He goes to the Bears, he makes Johnson's decision easier.
Sure, let Vrabel go, and let Johnson make the obvious choice of CHI when he is able to chose.

NOT!

In what world is NE a better choice than CHI?

Yes, the CHI ownership is hard to work with. They have a playoff team and a coach that can't bring them to the playoffs.

Ownership

It’s been talked about how the Jets, Bears, and Jags ownership is viewed around the league and that a qualified coach wouldn’t want to hitch their wagon to these teams.

Fans may get on the Krafts, but they are viewed as solid, stable owners in the NFL. We don’t have the the 17 year old son making decisions based on Madden or Shad Khans kid at the draft in a neck brace after taking a pile driver at a wrestling event.
I love it!

Coaches should choose NE because the ownership is so good!

I agree, but don't take a poll!

I don't know if it's a sham interview process or not but i'd be shocked if it wasn't Vrabel.

All the journos pretty much know it and according to Giardi so do many league execs.
"Sham" interview process?

The interview process is forced by the NFL. Asking Johnson to interview give Kraft the chance to get others to interview. Otherwise, candidates may be hard to fine with Vrabel having the job locked up.

Folks SHOULD interview. It helps their career chances to have HC interviews, plus they can make their case to work for us as a coordinator.

They have to meet with 2 minorities but I simply do not believe that Vrabel isn't the guy giving all the wink wink going around.

He's probably 5 times the coach Mayo is so that good news but the question is, is he any good without a top 5 running back of all time?

I'd be really concerned with that and people seem to be outright dismissing it.
Draft Jeanty then

A lot of us were right last year. I'm not against hiring Ben Johnson per se, however you act like he is a known commodity as a head coach. And what makes you conclude hiring Vrabel precludes the possibility of a major roster overhaul?

One has done it the other hasn't. Both will bring in their own front office guy. I am not sure, honestly, how Ben Johnson gets that pull, but it's the running narrative at this point.

Vrabel will have a better roster and will have better results.

I'm done with the Patriots Way. The Patriots tree or whoever has been here already in any capacity.

We will be fine with Vrabel. But it's time for something new in my opinion.
