Raiders surprisingly keeping Pierce.
So if we don’t hire Vrabel he could very well end up the Jets HC.
The Jets are in total rebuild mode now. You can't really make decisions based off fear of them.

I definitely agree with the preference for an offensive-minded head coach because I think system continuity means more on that end. HOWEVER, before we start worrying about sustaining success it'd be nice to start having success again first.

I like to think that Vrabel is a smart guy. He spent the whole year in CLE with a good offensive mind in Stefanski. I'm sure he's aware that he needs to establish a strong coaching staff on that side of the ball. I'm sure he's not only focused on finding an OC, but also building a capable staff beyond that.

Of course there are potential challenges down the line, but it shouldn't be written off on that account. It's sort of pretentious to just assume things will work out and we'll have success to maintain. Attack the goal of actually having success in the first place and then worry about sustaining it after. Don't take it for granted.

I have concerns about Josh landing the O C job for Vrabel. Josh seem locked in to his scheme (A&E difficult one). Maye seeme to like the west coast scheme. Why would we bring in a system that's hard to learn. We've seen many a veteran fail to master his system. Bring on the Johnson & Agnew combo.. Thoughts
Josh did well when Brady was the QB here but he is pretty average otherwise….very predictable….and can’t make adjustments well….Pass.

Get rid of AVP and especially Covington….Covington is horrible
Their current employment is irrelevant. The new HC fills his staff as he sees fit. If the new HC says he's running it back with Covington then you can mutiny. Relax though. Not happening.

I don't trust Josh. He's been a reported headcase everywhere he's been without Belichick. I don't want him to go nuts and pull a "I coached Tom Brady, so sit down and shut up" stuff with Maye.

I thought he did very well with Matt Cassel and Mac Jones. I'd even argue he did an admiral job the Cam Newton year where there really wasn't much to work with.

I think they will know if they really love him or not this week and if he is worth waiting on.

If the Lions make it all the way to the NFC Championship but lose, Johnson would be able to declare that he has taken the Pats job as soon as January 27th, which is 3 weeks from now. Not TOO far off, but still puts you a bit behind the 8 ball as far as filling a staff out.

If the Lions win that, and are Super Bowl bound, then you're stuck waiting until February 10th to hire him... which is 5 weeks away. And only 1 month away from free agency. Kinda tough pill to swallow.
Especially if you have the very strange idea that the HC is the one running the draft.

I’m hanging my hat on Ben Johnson.
I think Johnson will be the guy cause he will blow them away with what he can do with Maye.
So, the coach who is our #2 choice has the option of deciding to pass on the waiting and takes a job in the two weeks before the Super Bowl.

If weeks go by and we don’t hire Vrabel or he takes a job elsewhere then we know.
OK, we know???

Let us say that DET wins the championship and CHI and NE haven't made a choice. in a couple of days.

Should Vrabel wait and HOPE that Kraft won't take Johnson and CHI takes someone else? After all, until the CHI choice the patriots will be fine if they are OK with either. Obviously, if it is clear that CHI also wants Vrabel or Johnson, then all parties can wait until after the Super Bowl.

Vrabel could reasonably pressure the team to make a decision or Vrabel will need to go elsewhere rather than be out of a top job.

The writer means with the HOPE that Vrabel or Johnson will take the job at the time offered.
There's a lot of consternation here about this not being a desirable job. I cannot wrap my head around it. Well connected owner in NFL circles, stable franchise, young QB with promise on a rookie contract, high draft pick and not in cap hell, with money to spend, with a recent winning tradition. All new coaches (with the exception of Pete Carroll, Barry Switzer and George Siefert) come in to situations needing repair. This is a good job.

If this is true, due diligence can include 10 interviews and still end up choosing before the Championship games,

If we want Ben Johnson to be able to choose between us a CHI, then we could wait and lose Johnson AND lose Vrabel.
========
WHICH IS OUR MESSAGE TO VRABEL

1) We want you but we need to interview others. We will make our decision before the Championship games. This will show you that Ben Johnson is not our first choice.

2) We want you but we need to interview others. We will make the decision when we complete all the interviews, which we expect to be completed in the week after the Super Bowl.
=======
Under Alternative 2, Vrabel better have a Plan B in case Kraft chooses a coach from among those on Super Bowl teams.
