Dude I like you, but you are completely wrong with Reid and our going against what he, the entire org and anyone who covers them says. Like it's probably one of the most well known things about the Chiefs that Reid wanted to avoid front office responsibilities like the plague and just wants to finish his career coaching players and working with them on X's and O's and being on the field. Like every single person who remotely covers the Chiefs is very aware of this. It's not a new thing, you probably picked the worst example with Reid.

Personally I think this is more Patriots fans being so accustomed to how Bill Belichick did things and ran the team and no realizing how much of an outlier we became in regards to the coach having control. Teams don't do it that way anymore. The entire league has moved off of it because they view roster building as too big of a job for the guy who has to be coach. We have a tiny operation and it's one of the biggest issues with our front office in that regard.

Idk if he's asking for it now, but he straight up wanted it on the Titans and got in a power struggle there.

I think Patriots fans want a coach that can put together a modern program and can elevate and develop talent.
Did Vrabel want to be the GM himself or did he want it to be someone he was aligned with. From what I understand, after the AJ Brown fiasco the owner reacted by canning Jon Robinson, who had hired Vrabel and been aligned with him. He wanted Ryan Crowden to be given the GM title, but the owner went with someone he didn't align with.

I don't think these forced coach/GM pairings really work long term. That's why I think it's really important that Kraft is willing to make changes on the front office side if that's needed to align with the coach. On some degree, that's some level of "giving control to the coach" because it's his hand picked guy, but I really think you have to view those roles in tandem. You need to bring in both together and you should be interviewing them essentially as a package deal.

It looks like Ewers is staying, and I heard today that Miami's making a run at Carson Beck to try to keep him in college, so that takes a couple of QBs out of the mix.
I watched a lot for Texas games this year. Ewers did not improve his draft stock IMO this year. Lot's of "experts" had him pegged a day 2 guy last year, still is IMO. Manning, sad for me to say, looks like the better QB, but Sark is loyal to his upperclassmen, or so it would seem. I would wager that Manning stays at Texas at Ewers moves to the portal.

I think you're arguing the extreme end of the discussion. Are you saying Reid isn't even involved in the draft process at all and just comes in the day after draft day and says "what have you got for me"?????

Every coach in the league is working with their team's personnel and scouting department period. Just like it's a team game on the field, it's a team game in management too. Also the same is the specified roles within that hierarchy which I agree for KC the personnel final call rests outside of Reid, but saying he's washed his hands of any involvement whatsoever just to do Xs and Os?

No one in this poster back and forth is stating a grant of either Johnson OR Vrabel with personnel final call. Involvement in the process? Yes. Total control ? No.

Part 1. Chiefs and Lions make the Super Bowl
Part 2. Chiefs talk up the "3 peat" for two weeks
Part 3. Lions absolutely smoke the Chiefs in the big game 54-27
Part 4. The next day, Ben Johnson announces that he is the new Head Coach of the New England Patriots
Under that scenario is why you leave the personnel dept in place, so the new HC has at least some scouting done, unless he has his own people doing it now.

I love Mike Vrabel but I am leaning towards Ben Johnson. The Krafts really did their due diligence.
I like Johnson too but this is a charade and due diligence to keep fan base happy….but they are going with Vrabel I’m sure

*lightbulb clicks on*

What if..... Ben Johnson has been the plan all along, and they expect that the Lions will go on a long run, so they are leaving personnel as-is since they know they won't have enough time to replace that whole staff with Johnson and company in time before free agency and the draft?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but there are only 4 head coaching vacancies, right? Pats, Jets, Bears, and Jags. Am I missing anyone? The Giants are keeping Daboll.

That’s also really good news, this is a remarkably low number of job openings, so more chances to get the candidate you want. In the recent past, I believe there have been 6-7 openings annually.
Can’t believe Gints are keeping Daboll….that’s crazy

I don’t think Johnson would interview if it was a charade, I think Vrabel is the favorite.
But Johnson could wow them.
I think Krafts mistake with Mayo could impact Vrabel being a shoo in.
I think Jonathan and Eliot and Alonzo’s say will weigh as heavy as Krafts.

If weeks go by and we don’t hire Vrabel or he takes a job elsewhere then we know.

Even if Johnson isn't the guy. What if Vrabel comes in a ****s all over the place and "Kraft goes WTF just happened?" and passes? So your top two candidates didn't pan out for whatever reason, you still have to plan the combine, pro days, senior bowls and whatnot, you need that in place so if you end up with a third choice and you need him to be plug n play, you can. None of it is ideal, of course, but it's planning for a worst case scenario. Because the absolute worst case scenario is you fire everyone, and then Jonathan is going to the flippin' combine with a note pad and a stop watch while Dad conducts interviews.

I don't think that's totally realistic. I think they are pretty sure Vrabel is their man, but they want to check out this Johnson guy fully first because he's pretty cute and word in the hallway is that he likes them back and wants to go steady.

Agreed 100%, but you have to plan for the disaster just in case.

Vrabel is way overated. Johnson is the next guy up

I don't know why Kraft fired Mayo if he's only gonna hire a more successful of the same brand of coach. Which is defensive minded hard nosed football.
I agree to some degree on Vrabel and posted that last night….2 excellent years, 2 average years and 3 horrible years at Tennessee….is he better than Mayo ….of course but that’s a low bar. I really like what I’ve seen from Johnson but also understand everyone saying “hey another rookie HC no thanks”. We would benefit from an offensive minded HC this time around …or if it’s Vrabel he better hire really elite OC!
