If he says that he should be escorted from the building.
The only bad part is not spending much cap, which he wouldn't actually adhere to - but it would be what Kraft wants to hear. Then he can just convince Kraft they need to spend more later.

“So it pains me to have to part ways with Jerod, but to ensure that the plan stays on track, I can now reveal that we already have the succession plan in place with Jerod’s replacement already in house, and the succession clause in his contract.

Please welcome your next head coach of the New England Patriots…

Demarcus Covington!”
If Kraft was stupid enough to do that, he deserves whatever cr*pfest follows.

That seems sort of weird. How/why would there be a buyout if Mayo is already in position and being paid? Presumably, Mayo would be handled the same any other fired HC would be handled - he would continue to be paid his salary through the end of the contract even if he is not here anymore. I assume the total value of the deal will be in excess of $10M but spread over 3+ years, with 1 year having already been paid.

Last year, if theoretically Kraft wanted to hire Vrabel instead of Mayo in '24, he would've been facing this math:
- Bill's 2024 owed earnings: $25M
- Mayo's buyout: $10M
- Vrabel's 2024 earnings: ~$15M
- Total HC costs in 2024: $50M

Instead he elected to just go with Mayo (probably ~$5M in 2024) plus Bill, for a total of $30M.

Now, if he waits and does this in 2025 instead, it should look like this:
- Mayo's 2025 owed earnings: ~$5M
- Vrabel's 2025 earnings: ~$15M
- Total HC costs in 2025: $20M

This means he only had to spend $30M in 2024 and now $20M in 2025, as opposed to $50M in 2024 and then $15M in 2025. Spreads out Mayo's cost.
The bigger question is how did Bendover Bob get swindled into a guy with no leverage holding a buyout?

If this is true, Kraft did the following.

Before Mayo ever coached a practice at any level, Kraft announced him the eventual heir.
When that day came, Mayo had done nothing to be qualified to be a HC.
Kraft was swindled into hiring Mayo without considering any other candidate and somewhere along the line, the guy who wasn’t qualified got Kraft to sign a document saying if he hires anyone else Mayo gets $10,000,000.

If I didn’t know better I’d investigate whether Mayo ever worked at Orchids of Asia.

Why would we hired a coach who is striving for a .500 season?

We are going to have the most resources (money and picks) any NFL team has ever had in an off season, we have the qb and we have 8 games on the schedule next year against teams with 5 or less wins this year. All of which stink at QB.

Are we really ready to say we have the QB and the ability to spend more than any team ever has and we will be happy only beating 5 win teams?

Optum business tactics

- “There’s got to be clear communication with ownership, so that we understand as coaches what the expectations are,” Vrabel told The Athletic. “That’s so we can explain to them what’s reasonable, what we can do, what we probably can do and what we’re going to try to do — or die trying.

- "I want to have a structure in place that people see the game the same way I do from an X’s and O’s standpoint, from a personnel standpoint, with team-building. We would hopefully have that alignment, which is critical."

- "And I would like to be able to say that there’s a quarterback that you feel like you can win with — or that there’s a path to find the one that you can win with.”

Vrabel wants a quarterback he's confident the team can win with, which will pose an interesting dilemma regarding current starter Aaron Rodgers. The 41-year-old four-time NFL MVP has had a torrid two seasons in New York, with his first campaign ending after just four snaps with an Achilles tear.

I like all of this.

Mayos conditions to accept head coach

I want to make sure I get paid no matter what
I don’t want to work too hard
We have to hire my family and friends
Someone needs to really do the coaching stuff cause I don’t know much about it.

Not sure where you get that from.

What is clear is had none of that in TN.

Always like Vrabel, but I really want an OC mindset running the patriots for a change. And I really want to get away from the BB coaching tree.

Go get an OC - Johnson, Slowik, Brady - who's ready for the HC job. They could even keep AVP for Maye, as long as the new HC is calling plays, because good god their play-calling this year has been vomit-inducing.

And get a DC who innovates. Look at what Spags has done for the Chiefs this year. They haven't scored 30 in a game and are 15-1. This Front Office needs a full scrubbing.

Why is he giving all this info to the Athletic though? That's sort of weird.

Unless... he's putting it in the press so that it gets read by someone else.... like Robert and Jonathan Kraft.

I doubt Vrabel would take the Jets job. He’s been with clueless owners before and wouldn’t want to be saddled with Woody and his 17 year old kid calling the shots. The Bears ownership doesn’t make them an attractive spot either.

Let's not go to far:

The Jete will do more damage to Vrabel than Mayo will do to us.

I think for the Jetes to be successful it’s going to take more than a coaching change. Talents there but ownership needs to go. They may ruin Vrabes if he goes there. Hey maybe once they do, we will pick him up on the cheap! RK would love that! It’ll give Mayo more time to stink up the place, then when they go to fire him, Vrabes will be on the outs with the Jetes! It’s win win!

Hey now, .500 would be an improvement! I really cannot believe that’s now a thing with us…15-20 years from now, I can’t wait to see all the books etc about how bad things were here.

This could be an epic turnaround.
We have the QB
We can rebuilt the coaching staff and FO
We have more resources to spend to improve the team than any team has ever had

I think the whole point of the early Jets interview is to get his name out there early and to put pressure on Robert.

AND Drake will still be on his rookie contract if this all goes down soon…

If Mike Vrabel was Malk Vasquez Goldstein he’d already have a contract.

There are only so many NFL jobs out there, so push comes to shove I’m assuming he’ll take the Jets job if he’s offered and has no other offers. But I’m with you that he’s trying to get other teams out there interested that do meet his conditions - and the Patriots sure as heck seem like they should.
