If the infernal Jete hire Vrabel and Kraft brings Mayo back, I might give up on football altogether.

If they fire Mayo, then unless Kraft gave one of his assistants another successor clause, they must do a Rooney rule-compliant search (which requires two interviews with external minority candidates).
“So it pains me to have to part ways with Jerod, but to ensure that the plan stays on track, I can now reveal that we already have the succession plan in place with Jerod’s replacement already in house, and the succession clause in his contract.

Please welcome your next head coach of the New England Patriots…

Demarcus Covington!”

Sad thing? He'd actually be more qualified than Jerod Mayo when he took the job- he had a year as a defensive coordinator all to himself.

Just about every offensive coordinator out there runs some variation of the WCO these days. I don't think the transition would be a big one, if that's the case.

Yeah, this is really about the people that are excited about bringing MIke and Josh in.

I don't know if Vrabel is a top-level coach, or could fix the Pats in 1 year...

But, he has 7x the experience that Mayo does - literally! His years as a DC and HC are 7x Mayo's.
That has to count for something. Oh, and Vrabel also has a decent win % (over .500) and has made the playoffs 3 of 6 years.
"having a good roster" is not an excuse why someone is not a good coach. He won with a decent roster, and has won a playoff game.

FAR BETTER than Mayo has done, or will do before he gets fired here in 2 or 3 years (if RKK is still in charge).

The bigger problem is finding any offensive coordinator who would be willing to come work for Mayo.

And that’s the conundrum. A sort of chicken and egg scenario. Have to have either a winning team/talent or decent coaches for others to come.

They've got a QB, the #1 pick in the draft, and well over 100 million in cap space.

That's attractive to anyone, assuming Mayo's not here.

I really really want to believe that. They say money talks….Sadly I’ve got a feeling they will cheap out and not spend.

Well that's what they did this year, right?

I mean, if we're all being honest, it's far more likely than not, that the Krafts are just going to run it back with the Clown Committee in 2025.

What most of us are saying, is assuming that ownership aren't being complete and utter morons.

That seems sort of weird. How/why would there be a buyout if Mayo is already in position and being paid? Presumably, Mayo would be handled the same any other fired HC would be handled - he would continue to be paid his salary through the end of the contract even if he is not here anymore. I assume the total value of the deal will be in excess of $10M but spread over 3+ years, with 1 year having already been paid.

Last year, if theoretically Kraft wanted to hire Vrabel, he would've been facing this math:
- Bill's 2024 owed earnings: $25M
- Mayo's buyout: $10M
- Vrabel's 2024 earnings: ~$15M
- Total HC costs in 2024: $50M

Instead he elected to just go with Mayo (probably ~$5M in 2024) plus Bill, for a total of $30M.

Now, if he waits and does this in 2025 instead, it should look like this:
- Mayo's 2025 owed earnings: ~$5M
- Vrabel's 2025 earnings: ~$15M
- Total HC costs in 2025: $20M

This means he only had to spend $30M in 2024 and now $20M in 2025, as opposed to $50M in 2024 and then $15M in 2025. Spreads out Mayo's cost.
You mean this would have been the costs IF they took Vrabel instead of Mayo in '24?

Apologies, I should’ve said “cheap out again”.

Right, sorry if I didn't word it well

Nah, I am sure it's my monkey brain.

I think Vrabel would be a way better fit with the Jets than he would be here. A team with lots of talent that should be a lot better than they are. They’re a coach away and Vrabel has a good track record with loaded teams.

Pats are a lot more than a coach away from being good.

Yeah but I think he also wants to come to NE and make the team "his way". $150M+ cap space, #1 overall pick to trade back for assets, 22 year old franchise QB, only about 25% of the roster worth keeping and the rest can be totally reshaped.

We will have more assets available with which to improve the team this off season than any team has ever had in the history of the NFL.

Vrabel can say "Listen Bob, I know if you kept Mayo you'd need to spend huge to 'get him talent' to win games. Now you have to fire those guys and hire me, and that eats at your bottom line. So I will do you a solid and not spend as big this year - I will only spend maybe $75M of that, leave the rest for next year. Just need to add a few pieces, I think I can get a .500 team going with this QB and a few core players, and some good draft picks. And guess what, you won't have to overpay guys to come here to play with Mayo, and overpay coordinators to work under Mayo, because you'll have me here. Guys actually wanna play with me."

If he says that he should be escorted from the building.
