Does anyone think there is a chance Mayo is one and done?

Maybe, but where's the evidence of that?

From your pal Bedard this AM - "The coaches obviously have no idea how to scheme pressure. I was told that left with Bill and Steve Belichick."
This has been evident.
So much for that attacking, aggressive defense Covington promised.

Ouch!

That’s why Monday, January 6, Mayo will be fired along with the whole coaching staff.

I can see Mayo being bitter over Kraft, the very guy who gave him a shot. Way too early.

With more experience, I think Mayo would make a fine coach. But someday even he’ll admit that he wasn’t ready and had a lot to learn.

I agree with you except on the fine coach thing. Right now, I don’t know.

Seriously. Expecting Mayo to improve after watching him this year is like trying to fill a lobster trap with water and thinking "If I just keep at it for 5-10 years, eventually it will hold some."

He’s a smart guy, he played LB at a high level. He had to work hard to achieve that. With some renewed dedication to the craft, and giving him some benefit of the doubt, I think he could make a DC of himself years from now. But that’s not really helpful to us today. “Guy has a chance to maybe be capable of a job lower than the one he has now if he works really hard at it”

IMO Mayo doesn't have the ability to make quick adjustments.

He's slow even figuring out whether to accept or reject a penalty.

Excellent linebackers coach is his upside IMO, even agreeing with everything you say.

Added: Probably Pepper Johnson was in the same boat, only Bill saw it.

Kraft is doing exactly the right thing....................... if he's firing Mayo.

Why have it out there that his coach is toast in a few days, especially since Mayo is a friend?

We'll know soon enough.
Kraft was leaking it that Bill was gone for over a month before he got fired. If Kraft made the decision, he's too PR prone to not have his side being conveyed to the media.

Kraft clearly doesn't want to fire him this year and everything we've seen indicates that.

I'll eat my words if I'm wrong, but I think there's going to be a lot of freaking out on Monday when coaches are getting fired and the Patriots are either radio silent or you get a report that says Mayo will be staying.

We are spinning our wheels and more likely than not it is mouse quiet after Sunday’s game regardless the outcome.

Then Kraft will have a press conference saying he is standing by Mayo.

That was with Bill, a dangerous person to be in conflict with, considering his media ties.

This is Kraft's loyal friend.

So how would Kraft handle this?
If he was going to move on after the season and break the long term commitment he made to him?
Would he report his unwavering support til the end of the season and make the logical move?
Or would he look at Jerod and say I didn’t set him up the best we could have opened the purse to more free agents and paid more to assistant coaches to get better people around him.
Would he say we are going to overpay to boost the front office?
See we all know Jerod isn’t ready to be a HC, but my concern is Jerod sees himself more of a CEO a face who delegates any and all responsibilities.
Some public speaking, public relations training classes in the offseason Kraft may see that he can get 7 to 10 wins if they hit on the draft and free agency and get better play callers on the team,

I think this is the choice Kraft would prefer to go and give Jerod every chance to succeed, Kraft is more than likely afraid of a icy relationship with someone like Mike Vrabel and is too old and has no interest in building new rapport with a young Hot shot like a Kellen Moore of a Joe Brady

I think we get another heap of Mayo with a promise to rebuild from the inside to the outside.

If Kraft was going to move on from Mayo he'd want the media to put his story out there so the PR of making a mistake hiring him is softened. He's not going to want to show his ass for this. Nothing about Kraft recently at all suggests he's content in not having his position well represented.

Realistically he just doesn't want to fire Mayo after one year and is setting the table to keep him. You don't say "we are keeping him unless the last 3 games are a total calamity" if you want to fire someone. You tell someone they have to do a good job and earn it, not "don't screw up too bad". That's just not how people act.

Again, some of you should be very prepared that it's highly likely on Monday nothing will happen with the Pats and then Schefter will post a tweet saying "the Patriots do not intend to fire Mayo and feel confidant he will show improvement in 2025".

Here is what that looks like.....

Kraft is empowering Wolf to pick & buy the groceries which means running the draft and signing players. Based on the last draft, Wolf hit on one pick....one. He is also empowering Wolf to spend ~$100m in cap space.

He is also empowering Mayo to develop, motivate, and incorporate said players in his culture, system, scheme, use appropriately on gameday and win. We have seen zero evidence he knows how to maximize talent. Based on this past year, there is zero evidence he is up to that task.

That is a big, big risk and a whole lotta faith based on a sub-standard (but short) track record.

It is even a bigger risk because the franchise has sunk to the bottom and if the management team screws this up, the franchise will stay at the bottom for years to come.

Mayo is fired the day after the Bills game. He’s no where near ready to be a HC. Gotta burn it to the ground, as painful as that is.

Americans have an unmatched talent in just this.

Hire Vrabel. Throw a boatload of money at Tee Higgins. And that’s just for starters.

Give Vrabel a say in personnel decisions.

It’s a shame it had to end like this with Mayo. A loyal guy.

But it’s business not personal.

I dont see a scenario where NE looks back in 3 years and regrets firing Mayo. No one will care that he was 1 and done. First step forward is losing a terrible woefully underwhelming first year coach. Whats the downside of just pulling that bandaid off.

I agree with this and having Vrabel say he'd be interested in the job washes away any taint of firing Mayo after a year and scaring away quality coaches.

That said, I still think we would have been hearing more if Kraft was thinking of making a move.
